Scene 3: The beach of a secluded islandit is evening now. The place is inhabited by feral cats. On stage are Juudai, Asuka, Shou,Daitokuji, Manjyome, Ryou, Rei, Fubuki, Misawa, who is reading a travel brochure and has a bandage on his face and Momoe who is taking notes and appears irritated.

 

Juudai: So this is the place, huh?

 

Misawa: Apparently so. [reads from the brochure] The Millennium Temple located on scenic Yami no Crown Island. Famous for its many feline inhabitants and the first step of the legendary Seven Trials of the Crown. According to the map, the temple is located inside a volcano just north of here. [pulls out his compass] Hmm, which way do we—[Momoe indignantly clears her throat and points to a sign pointing to a path that says, “To Temple” on it]

 

Juudai: Excellent! [to Misawa] Where would you be without her?

 

Momoe: Married to a tiger?

 

Misawa: We should get going if we are to make it to the temple before midnight. [Misawa and Momoe exit]

 

Juudai: You guys are all coming too?

 

Daitokuji: Naturally, the knights cannot leave the king and queen to fend for themselves. [he exits]

 

Shou: Aniki is never alone! [he exits]

 

Ryou: I want to bear witness to the seven trials.

 

Rei: I'm going wherever he's going. [Rei and Ryou exit]

 

Juudai: It will be quite a walk to the Temple. Would you like for me to carry you?

 

Asuka: Promise me you will not. I want to share your hardships, not add to them.

 

Juudai: I promise. [takes Asuka's gloved hand.] Come, my dear, let us proceed side-by-side and not one before the other.

 

Asuka: You know just what to say to take a girl's breath away.

 

Fubuki: Nah, he stole that from Shakespeare. It's the corset that takes your breath away.

 

Juudai: Who's Shakespeare? [Juudai, Asuka, and Fubuki exit]

 

Manjyome: This is my chance! When “King Slacker” fails miserably, I will undertake the seven trials and marry the princess! [notices that he has been left behind] GAH, you better not be making out!

 

Scene 3b: Almost midnight inside innermost section of the temple. The room is empty save the large stone slab in the middle of the room. Shou is the first one to enter with Misawa, Momoe, and Daitokuji.

 

Shou: I thought those stairs would never end!

 

Misawa: Is that all the stamina you've got?

 

Momoe: I think that his energy levels are quite astounding. Perhaps it is you who lacks stamina or maybe you are just spiteful because in all your logic you could not figure out an easier way to get us up here? [Ryou enters with Rei asleep on his back.]

 

Daitokuji: Methinks that Cabin Boy-Girl figured that one out. [Juudai and Fubuki escort Asuka in. Juudai is energetic and wearing a T-Shirt that says: “I rescued a princess and all I got was this lousy shirt.”]

 

Juudai: We made it, Honey!

 

Asuka: [panting] Indeed. [She breaks away from Fubuki and Juudai.]

 

Juudai: You sure you are okay?

 

Asuka: I am as strong as any of my fellow subjects. [Asuka trips on her dress and falls backwards down the stairs, but is quickly caught by Manjyome who carries her back into the room.]

 

Juudai: Asuka!

 

Manjyome: Are you so weak that you cannot even catch your woman when she falls?

 

Asuka: It wasn't his fault I—

 

Manjyome: Fine thanks I get from you for saving your life, Princess! I'd say you owe me a kiss. [he puts her down]

 

Juudai: Now see here—

 

Asuka: No, Juudai. Manjyome is right.

 

Juudai and Manjyome: WAH?

 

Asuka: Thank you for saving my life Manjyome, but if I cannot kiss my own husband, I cannot kiss anyone at all.

 

Daitokuji: Uh, Juudai, it's almost midnight.

 

Juudai: [approaches the stone slab] So, is this where I sign my soul away?

 

Misawa: This would appear to be the contract. [reads the slab] `By the signing of your name on the dotted line, I hereby forfeit the rights to my mortal soul to begin the seven trials of the crown knowing full well that if I do not complete them in seven days my soul will remain in the shadows for all eternity so on and so forth…so if you are ready Juudai, the midnight hour is fast approaching sign your name away on this contract in your own blood.

 

Asuka: I will sign my name away too!

 

Misawa: My queen, I am afraid that is not possible. According to the fine print, only one person can sign the contract at any given time. I am truly sorry.

 

Juudai: Believe in me, Asuka and I will not fail! [she nods her head. Juudai takes out a Swiss army knife and cuts his wedding ring finger just enough to sign his name onto the slab just as the clock strikes midnight.] I better not get Hepatitis C from this. [Everyone stands in silence as they wait for something to happen. Juudai kicks the slab.] This thing is busted! [Asuka rips a ruffle off of her petticoat and uses it to bandage Juudai's finger. Suddenly Pharaoh sneaks on in and slashes Juudai's ankle with his claws.] AH! What the--? [Pharaoh carries an envelope in his mouth and drops it at Juudai's feet.] Is that for me? [Pharaoh meows] I'll take that as a `yes'. [opens the envelope, pulls out a letter and reads:] Thank you for choosing the Seven Trials of the Crown for all your king-making needs. Because time is of the essence we suggest you get a move on. Sincerely, the Shadows. PS. Please do not kick the sacred objects. So, what is the first trial then, Kitty? [Pharaoh meows]

 

Daitokuji: He says to see the enclosure. [Daitokuji picks Pharaoh up and pets him.]

 

Manjyome: You speak cat?

 

Daitokuji: Someone in this crew has to. [Juudai looks inside the envelope and pulls out a map.]

 

Juudai: [reads] Search for treasure? The Shadows are speaking our language! Navigator, do you know where this island is?

 

Misawa: [takes the map] Isle del inferno?

 

Daitokuji: I've heard of that island. It is said that the ruler of the underworld, The Queen of the Night, resides there. Every night she commands her army of ghosts to haunt the world of the living.

 

Shou: A ghost queen!

 

Juudai: Calm down, Shou, that's just a rumor.

 

Misawa: Indeed, it's probably just some cantankerous old maid who wishes to smite the world of men.

 

Momoe: If it is, she probably has good reasons for doing so.

 

Juudai: Well, at least we know where to go from here.

 

Daitokuji: You heard the king, back to the ship. [They turn to leave. Pharaoh meows again] Pharaoh says there's a quick exit behind the slab.

 

Manjyome: Pharaoh? Did the cat just introduce himself to you?

 

Daitokuji: No, I read his identification tag. You see, `Pharaoh: lap hog and guide through the seven trials of the crown.' [Pharaoh jumps out of Daitokuji's arms and stands in front of the stone slab. He meows and a door opens behind the slab.]

 

Juudai: Rats, I was hoping to take the scenic route past the gift shop again.

 

Manjyome: And wear the princess out further until she is dead? You call yourself a man!

 

Daitokuji: Besides, that's just a trap for the tourists that come through here.

 

Manjyome: Does it say that on the cat's identification tag?

 

Daitokuji: No, I thought that was obvious.

 

Manjyome: Never mind! [to Juudai] You may prove to be a lousy man to the princess, but I'll be condemned to the Shadow Realm if I am ever labeled as such. [Grabs Asuka in a fireman's carry and races down the stairs with her. She screams in protest, but Manjyome doesn't listen to her. Juudai chases after them.]

 

Juudai: Get back here with my wife!
