A Little Kindness

I got the idea for this story from a Digimon story I once read.

Disclaimer: I don't own the characters or Yugioh. This is yaoi so if you don't like, don't read! Now if that is clear please continue. Sorry about that but I have yet to be flamed and I don't want to be.

This is Ryou/Bakura fic. It is also my first Yugioh fic so if I get something wrong please tell me.

Ryou' s Pov

It was a sunny spring day. The flowers were blooming, causing a riot of colors and smells. Even though, as my Yami put it, I was acting like a weakling girl, I was enjoying the beauty of the new flowers. I was just leaving the park to head home to enjoy a two weeklong spring vacation, when I heard a weak mewl. Deciding to follow it, I quickly headed in the direction it came from. Finally after a few minutes of searching I came across a little male silver kitten hiding in some bushes. It was bleeding from a wound to it side. It looked it me curiously before hissing and backing up.

"Shh, it's alright, I am not going to hurt you." He seemed to understand and lightly walked forward. Slightly limping in his back right leg. I placed a hand out and let him sniff it. After a moment he rubbed against it before jumping back as though expecting to be hit.

Boy do I know that feeling, even though my Yami and I had come to a truce of sorts, I always got the feeling that he could some day go back to the way he was before. I can understand the cat's feelings completely. At times I felt just like him. I could maybe get a little kindness from my Yami before his kindness turned to cruelty.

"It's ok I won't hurt you" I said once more and slowly he came back to my hand and rubbed against it once more. This time he didn't run away but continued to rub against my hand, purring quite contently. I saw that he had violet eyes. After a moment I realized who he reminded me of, Bakura. I decided then that there was no way I was going to leave this poor kitten here, no matter what my Yami would say about my kindness being a weakness. Slowly as to not scare the kitten I pulled of my coat and wrapped it around him, being careful to not hurt his side or leg. He squirmed unhappily for a moment before complying and curling up in a little ball and decided to take a nap. I pulled him close to my chest and walked home.

I came to my door and being careful moved the kitten to one arm. With my free arm I took my house key from my pocket. Opening up the door, I found my Yami sitting on the couch.

"Hello Yami."

"Hello, How was your day." I could tell that he didn't care, but was trying to be somewhat polite. At least he was trying. I couldn't help but smile a bit.

"It was fine, I also got a new pet." That really got his attention. He stood up and walked to where I stood. It took all my will power to not take a step back but to let my eyes meet his. After a moment I removed the coat from the cat's head and let the kitten peak out.

He stared for a moment before raising a hand and lightly running it through the cat's silver fur. I couldn't help but be shocked; my Yami was showing kindness.

"What is its name?"

"Huh?' I said still in shock.

"What did you name the kitten," He asked still running a hand through its fur.

"Umm, I hadn't thought of one yet." I said just realizing it myself.

"Name him Thoth" and with that he returned to his soul room.

"Thoth, a good a name as any. So what do you think of your name." He looked at me for a moment before closing his eyes and going back to his nap. I took the kitten to the bathroom and lightly unwrapped him so I could get a good look at its side. Taking a lightly damp washcloth I cleaned the cut. Thoth cried unhappily and tried to get away.

I am sorry but I have to clean this. He seemed to understand and calmed down a bit even though it still hurt. Thinking back to something I heard, I lightly started humming. He seemed to like it and calmed down some more. (This is something I found to be true, if you have to clean a cut or injury on a kitten, humming tends to calm them down.) After a bit, I had the cut completely cleaned and was happy to find it was not serious. I had some medical training but unfortunately it came from having to take care of myself after my Yami Lessons.

I then took the kitten to my room where I had my laptop set up on my desk. Logging in I searched up Kitten care tips. And started taking notes.

For all new kittens first get a litter box and preferably non-scented litter because this may cause breathing problems. Secondly get food and water dish preferably stainless steel, as this is less likely to maintain germs. Cat toys are very important in keeping the kitten happy and active. Do not get a kitten a collar whether it is regular or flea until they are at least 12 weeks of age. If a kitten gets dirty use a warm washcloth to lightly clean it. This basically reminds the kitten of its mother's way of bathing it and it should hold still. This is also a way to show affection for your kitten. Make sure to get a cat brush, It is very important to brush your kitten down to make sure it doesn't get knots. Cats generally enjoy this.

After finishing, Ryou backed up to the search engine and typed in the name Thoth. After a moment he got back a list of replies. Clicking one, he got taken to a web page that said

Thoth
(Thot, Thout; Egyptian Djhowtey, Djehuti, Tehuti, Zehuti)
Said to be the Egyptian moon god. Over time, he developed as a god of wisdom, and came to be associated with magic, music, medicine, astronomy, geometry, surveying, drawing and writing. Thoth was generally depicted in human form with the head of an ibis, wearing a crown consisting of a crescent moon topped by a moon disk. He could also be depicted wholly as an ibis or a baboon. Both the ibis and the baboon were sacred to him. His principal sanctuary was at Hermopolis (Khmunu) in the Nile delta region.

Thoth served as an arbiter among the gods. In the Osirian legend, he protected Isis during her pregnancy and healed her son Horus when Seth tore out his left eye. Thoth was later identified with the Greek god Hermes in the form of Hermes Trismegistos ("Hermes the thrice great"), in which form he remained popular in medieval magic and alchemy. Thoth was also a god of the underworld, where he served as a clerk who recorded the judgments on the souls of the dead. Alternatively, it was Thoth himself who weighed the hearts of the dead against the feather of Truth in the Hall of the Two Truths.

Amused, Ryou lightly laughed.

/ Fitting name, Yami, considering that Thoth has silver fur/

/ Yami, can you help me?/

// What now?//

/Can you watch Thoth, I can't leave him here alone, and I need to go pick some stuff up for him. /

//Fine//

With that a Gold light appeared around the ring, startling Thoth who was sitting in Ryou's lap. He jumped back and ran under Ryou's bed. Getting up from his chair Ryou went over to the bed and look under it. Thoth was curled up in the back corner hiding, watching him distrusting. Sighing, Ryou got up and after searching for a moment found a piece of string. Taking it over to the bed he leaned down once more and placed the string under the bed as far as he could. Slowly he started to move the string back from under the bed until the kitten was out from under it and pounced on the string end. Picking up Thoth, he grabbed the string and handed it the kitten.

"Here you can keep it." The silver kitten quite happily took to wrapping the string around himself. Smiling amused Ryou handed the kitten to Bakura who was watching him with an odd expression on his face. Bakura followed Ryou to the living room.

"I should be back in two hours at the latest" Checking once more that he had his wallet, he left.

-Bakura's POV-

Looking down at the kitten in his arms, who was quite happily playing with his string, he asked lightly

"Now what am I going to do with you?" The kitten looked up at him, Violet eyes looking completely innocent. Those eyes reminded him so much of his Hikari's, even though they were violet instead of green. (I know that Ryou's eyes are changed to brown later in the series but my preference is green, so I am going to stick with it.) Thinking back he remembered a time in which his actions could have cost him his Hikari.

Flashback

Bakura was in his soul room thinking back to lesson he had given his weak light that day.

~ He needs to learn to protect himself; I cannot constantly watch him. Damn him! I should feel nothing for him. He is nothing but weak and is someday going to get himself killed with his weakness ~

/ I...am sorry....that I couldn't...be as ......strong ..as ...you ....wanted.../ with that Bakura felt the link he had to his Hikari disappear.

// Ryou!?// Getting no reply, Bakura left his soul room to find himself in the bathroom. There he found his Hikari surrounded by blood that was obviously his own. Kneeling down he quickly grabbed Ryou's wrist which each had a long cut following the vein.

Ryou... Bakura said weakly. Standing up he quickly went to the sink. Under it was the First Aid Kit. Grabbing it and wetting a washcloth he leaned down and pulled his Hikari in to his arms, not caring that he was getting covered in blood. He grabbed one wrist and ran the cloth a long the cut then took a medical pad and covered it in some medicine and placed it on the cut, then wrapped it with a bandage. Then he repeated the process with the other arm. When finished he stood up and took Ryo into his room Then he removed Ryou's dirty clothes and for the first time saw what damage he had done. Ryou's white skin was covered in bruises and cuts in different stages of healing. He laid Ryou down and covered him in a comforter and headed to the bathroom to clean up the mess.

After cleaning up the blood he returned to Ryou's room to wait for him to wake up. It was nearly twelve hours later that Ryou began to awake.

....Where am I. Ryou asked weakly.

In your room, Idiot. What were you trying to do!?

Why do you care? Are you mad because it is your right to kill me with one of your Lessons!? Ryou practically spat, green eyes glowing with rage.

~Please let this work~ Bakura said to himself.

I will make you a deal, if you don't try to kill yourself again there will be no more Lessons.

Why? Ryou queried, confused.

~I can't tell him the truth! ~

I don't want to be sealed again. Bakura said quickly So is it a deal?

Ryou grabbed Bakura's hand and shook it. Deal.

End Flashback

~ I was lucky, that I got to him in time. ~ Bakura mused to himself petting the kitten that was sitting in his lap. Decided that he was slightly tired Bakura lay down on the couch with the kitten on his chest and went to sleep.

Ryou's POV

I came to my house and lightly placed the bags down on the porch before opening the door. It had taken a lot longer than I planned because I spoke to a vet working at the pet store to get some info. Such as what is the best food for a kitten and what toys are appropriate. I think she thought I was a pet fanatic for all the questions I asked. I also read every label to make sure I was getting the right things. Afterwards I had two bags full of things for Thoth. I even got a camera so I can take pictures of him.

He opened the door to the cutest sight ever. Bakura had Thoth on his chest wrapped in his arms.

Setting the bags down softly he took out his camera and took to pictures and waited for the pictures to develop. When they were done they showed the scene perfectly. He placed them in his backpack by the door, knowing that they would be safest there. He then took the bags and went to the kitchen to set things up. In a corner next the back door he placed the food dish and water dish. Then always a way in that same area he set up the litter box. He put the canned and dry food in a cabinet in the kitchen.

Then he went to the living room to place the small wood toy chest next to the T.V. It was short enough that if Thoth wanted a toy he could get it but Ryou wouldn't have to worry about a big mess in the living room.

Bakura's POV

I heard something moving, but realized immediately by feel that it was my Hikari. He was putting some box next to the T.V. and was filling it with weird looking things. He then turned around to face me.

"Hello Yami. Did you enjoy your nap?"

I made a non-commitical sound; annoyed that Ryou had caught me unaware.

"I got everything I needed." he said happily. With that he walked over and lightly woke the kitten up. Thoth opened sleepy violet eyes and basically glared at Ryou for waking him.

"Come on Kit, it's time for you to eat. You are way under weight."

With that he took Thoth from my arms and took him to the kitchen. I decided to get up and follow him, curious as to what he was doing. He went to a cabinet and took out a can. He crossed the kitchen to a little area that had more stuff in it then that morning. He pulled the lid of and placed some weird stuff in the gray bowel. Thoth walked up to it and sniffed at it unsure than suddenly, happily started eating it.

"What is that stuff?" I asked confused.

"It is kitten food. It has all the vitamins needed to get Thoth back to proper weight. He gets two cans a day and as much hard food as he wants."

Then it hit me. "Don't you have school in the morning?"

"No, I have a Fifteen day vacation. I don't go back for about two weeks. Which is good so I get to keep an eye on the Thoth."

"Oh."

Ryou POV

Later after I had finished my dinner, I turned to find Bakura playing with Thoth. He had a little fake mouse tied on a string and was moving it. Thoth was happily chasing it and Bakura would occasionally let the silver kitten get a hold of it before moving away again.

~ Keeping Thoth was a very good idea. Bakura really seems to like him. Bakura is already wrapped around Thoth's delicate little paw. I wonder how he did that? ~

It was about 8 when Ryou finished cleaning the dinner dishes. Ryou walked into the living room and sat on the couch.

"Would you like to watch a movie with me. Independence day is supposed to be playing."

"Sure." Bakura said getting up from the floor, leaving Thoth to play with his toy. He sat down next to Ryou on the couch. Ryou turned the lamp off and grabbed the remote control and turned the T.V. on to catch the beginning of Independence Day.

After a few minutes Thoth started to cry next to the couch. Bakura picked him up and Thoth took a seat between Ryou and Bakura. He was soon asleep.

Bakura POV

The movie was now over. Sometime during it Ryou fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. I had no desire to move him. I was just enjoying the feeling of him leaning against me. It was late so I moved so that I could pick him up. He was light and felt deceptively frail in my arms.

I knew just how much abuse he could take. I winced at that thought. I lightly walked up the stairs and placed Ryou on his bed. I turned to find that Thoth had followed me. Somehow he had gotten up the stairs. He meow lightly and I placed him on the bed. He curled up on Ryou's pillow and closed his eyes, purring happily as he fell asleep. I brushed a bang away from Ryou's face and enjoyed the feel of the silky white hair.

"Good night" I said then entered my soul room.

Ryou POV

Thoth had now been with us for about a week and I couldn't be happier. Well Maybe I could if Bakura was in love with me, but I wasn't complaining. Bakura was in a much better mood than ever and was being nice to me now. I sat down on the couch next to Bakura.

Thoth didn't lose any time as he jumped from Bakura's lap to Ryou's, surprising Bakura and making him fall onto Ryou.

Bakura yelped and Ryou gasped as Bakura fell right on top of him and cursed inwardly, not knowing if he should thank or strangle his cat.

Bakura's POV

Bakura pushed himself up on one arm and tried to move away from Ryou when the cat, he was sure it was from hell now, jumped again, landing this time on his back, making him fall once again on top of Ryou.

Slightly dazed, Bakura blinked and tried to focus, then his eyes widened when he realized in what position him and Ryou were. Not only they were spread eagle on the couch, one on top of the other, but also they were kissing! Somewhere in the fall their mouths had connected with each other, but it was a kiss nevertheless. Deciding to take a risk he placed his lips more firmly against that of his Hikari. Ryou gasped for a second before deciding he was happy about it and returned the kiss. They finally separated both out of breath.

Ryou started to chuckle lightly. "I think Thoth has been planning that for awhile." Said kitten was looking quite happy with himself watching his owners with his violet eyes. No longer did they look quite so innocent and if one look closely he appeared to be smirking.

Bakura lightly chuckled. I don't know whether to strangle or thank Thoth."

"Thank him. I know I have wanted to do that for a while. Plus I don't want you to hurt our cat."

"If you say so." With that Bakura leaned down once more and kissed Ryou again. Ryou was more than happy to comply.

When they separated, Bakura let Ryou up. Ryou happily leaned against Bakura, and Bakura wrapped him in his arms.

"I think that was Thoth's thank you for taking him in. Isn't it amazing what a little kindness will do?"

"Indeed." deciding he had enough of a break decided to kiss his Hikari again. The little silver kitten watched his owners happy to have gotten them together.
