Chapter four

I softly padded into my kitchen, contentedly finishing off a bowl of chocolate ice cream that I had
just got from the mini mart down the street. I grimaced at the scorch marks on my walls where
various kitchen appliances have either blown up or started on fire. Tossing my now empty bowl
into the sink (with the knowledge that it wouldn't be washed for weeks), I turned to go watch
some cartoons in the living room.

As I settled myself onto the navy colored pull out couch, I looked over the room I was in. Plain,
old white blinds covered the only two windows in my apartment. The only other furniture in the
room is the computer and desk in the corner, an end table with a small lamp, and a medium sized
television in front of my couch. Over in the corner, next to the computer sits my goldfish bowl.
A single, small goldfish is swimming around in there. That's Larry.

I tried to concentrate on watching TV, but my stomach kept growling. Remembering that I had
finished off all of my food this morning, I groaned but slowly shuffled into my kitchen. Reaching
into the cookie jar that sits on top of my fridge, I pulled out twenty dollars.

Suddenly exhausted, I slipped on some flip flops, turned off the TV, and locked my apartment
door behind me.

At the mini mart, I picked up a couple of groceries that would last me for a week or two. And
another bag of oreos.

Fifteen minutes later, I walked up the stairs into my ten story apartment building. As I stepped
into the elevator, I clicked the button for the sixth floor and opened the new bag of oreos.

*Ding* I stepped out onto my floor, still munching on the oreos. Sticking one into my mouth, I
shoved my hand into my pocket to find my keys. Raising the key to the door, I froze.

The door was open.

I toed the door open all of the way, and quietly walked over to the kitchen counter. I set down
the bag of groceries, and took a look around.

Holding the bag of cookies to my chest like it was a lifeline, I stealthily crept into my living room.
The first thing I noticed was that my television was on. The second thing I noticed was that there
were two guys sitting on my couch and watching it. How I missed them whenever I walked
through the door was beyond me.

Seeing no weapon close by that I could use, I dug my hand into the oreos. Pulling back my arm, I
whipped a cookie at the guy on the right. He yelled as the oreo hit him in the neck.

"Get out of my apartment, Urameshi."

"Holy hell, woman!" He cursed. "What the hell was that for?"

"Out!" I pointed at the door.

Kuwabara poked his head up from behind the couch. "Don't hit me," he pleaded.

Suddenly, my apartment door opened and shut. I glanced over to it and saw that the two other
guys from this morning had just entered.

"Is this a party or something?" I demanded. "I want you all out. How did you guys know where
I lived, anyway?"

"We don't mean you any harm," said Shuuichi. His intense emerald eyes studied my
reddish-brown ones. The red of his hair caught my eye, and I was vaguely reminded of that same
shade in my own locks.

"You shouldn't mean me any harm," I snapped. "It's my apartment! You can't just waltz in here
and pick a fight with me." Actually, they could. That just wouldn't be polite.

The orange haired kid, Kuwabara I think his name was, strode forward and looked down at me.
You have no idea how infuriating it is to look threatening when you're shorter than everyone
around you. Kuwabara narrowed his eyes at me.

"You're kinda short," he said gruffly, almost accusingly.

I face-faulted. "Brilliant observation. Thanks for the news update."

He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something more. Then without a word, he turned
and raided my grocery bag in the kitchen.

I rolled my eyes, then tensed slightly when I remembered the situation at hand. "What are you
boys doing here, anyway?" I mean, god, I barely even know them.

"We are here to offer you our services."

Instead of answering, I merely arched an eyebrow. When nobody answered, I asked, "Could you
elaborate?"

Smiling a dazzling smile, Shuuichi supplied, "We have received word that you might be in danger,
Miss Masuro. We are here to help."

I crossed my arms over my chest. "I can take care of myself. And I'm not in any danger. If
someone wanted to kill me, they would have tried something by now."

The guy with the red eyes stepped forward. "You don't know what you are up against. This is no
time for your arrogance." His eyes flashed dangerously as he continued. "Our offer has been
generously given. You will accept it." Is he threatening me?

"Listen here, you stupid dwarf," I said, as calmly as I could. "You don't break into my place and
then order me around. I don't need your help, I don't want your help, and I won't have your help!
Get out of my apartment!" I was yelling by the end.

Hiei's hand moved to the hilt of the sword at his hip. "I should kill you where you stand," he
snarled.

"Take your best shot," I said.

Shuuichi's eyes went wide. "Hiei. I said that we were not here to fight."

Urameshi stood up from the couch and joined Shuuichi. "Come on, Hiei, give it up. You heard
the toddler. We're not supposed to hurt her."

"I don't think they'll let you touch me." The nerve! Why on earth would these guys come in here
and pick a fight with me?

I heard, "We'll see about that," before the dude disappeared from where he stood. I felt a gust of
wind fly past me. With my excellent balance, I spun around and stared at Hiei, who was crouched
behind me. His back was facing me, and his sword was still drawn.

"You missed me, you dumbass." I couldn't believe it. And to think I had actually taken this guy
seriously.

He threw me off when he tossed me a smirk over his shoulder. Standing, he quietly sheathed his
sword but didn't turn around.

Quite suddenly, an intense pain seared across my midsection. I wanted to cry, it hurt so bad.
Instead, my eyes became unreadable and my face became somewhat emotionless.

I glanced down at my stomach and pressed a hand to the skin underneath my black T-shirt. My
fingers came away stained with blood. Lots of it. Gently, I tugged my shirt halfway off to stare
at my torso.

I grew somewhat lightheaded as I inspected the bloody design that the sword had left on me. A
giant "X" was carved onto my stomach, the marks going from my upper sides all the way down to
the opposite hips. One of the lines almost touched the tattoo. The wounds were only semi-deep,
but they were enough to cause some extreme discomfort.

Everything happened at once. Yusuke started yelling at Hiei, Kuwabara's mouth dropped open
and all of the food that was in it dropped out all over the floor. Shuuichi jumped forward and
tried to keep me from lunging at Hiei, who was smirking at all of us.

"I want you ALL out of my house. NOW."

"We're terribly sorry," Shuuichi said. I believe him. I mean, he's a nice guy. I'm pretty sure he
had no intentions of starting something.

I didn't reply. The four guys filed out of my apartment, Shuuichi assuring me that they'll talk to
me at a better time.

Kuwabara was the last one to leave, carrying the bag of oreos with him. I stared at him for a
moment with a look of incredulity in my eyes.

"Give me those," I said with a grin, and snatched the bag back. 'What a duffus,' I thought lightly.

A/N: wow, I wrote this in less than two hours. I'm so proud. I just thought I'd at least get
another chapter out before I leave, so here you all go, and I hope you enjoyed. ^_^
