"Competition"
Chapter 2 of Part 2

As we walked up the thousands of steps towards the shrine, Yuske angrily
grumbled threats under his breath. As we made out way over the final flight of stairs,
we saw the huge crowd of fighters waiting outside in the courtyard. We made our
way through the, estimated, thousands of people who all wished to be apprentice to
Genkai. Just then a voice called out Yuske's name. We both turned and saw a tall red-
haired boy looking towards us.
"Kuwabara? What are you doing here?"
Yuske asked, completely surprised the boy was here. I quickly recognized him as the
one who helped me get Yuske out of the fire.
"I could ask you the same question!"
Kuwabara shot back. He glanced over at me.
"Hey! You're the girl who got Urameshi out of that fire!"
He pointed out. I blushed and nodded.
"What's she doing here?"
He asked Yuske.
"We came together and don't get any stupid ideas."
Yuske said quickly. All of a sudden, a hush fell over the crowd and all eyes turned
towards the two front doors of the house. They opened and a figure stepped towards
us. The figure was a short old woman.
"This must be the psychic Genkai."
I thought.
"I see I have many who wish to train under me."
She said.
"So let's begin the first of today's screening tests…'
She paused.
'… By drawing lots."
Everyone looked around at one another, a little confused.
"Hurry up! We haven't all day!"
She said impatiently. Everyone got in two lines and made their way up to the front,
two by two. Yuske pulled up his sleeve and looked down at a weird watch.
"What's that?"
I whispered to him.
"It's a demon compass. It let's me know where demons are."
The needle then went crazy, spinning in all directions. Then the watch just blew up.
"So much for trusty."
Yuske muttered.
"Looks like you bought a crappy watch."
Kuwabara pointed out. Yuske glanced at me and I knew what he was thinking. Rando
was most definitely here.

After all the lots were drawn, including Yuske, Kuwabara, and I, we all opened
them and the first screening test began.
"Big whoop. I got red."
Yuske and Kuwabara said in unison, sounding not to thrilled. I then looked down at
my lot.
"What if it's blank? How will I be of help then?"
I thought. I the tore the paper and was shocked to see… my lot was red.
"Alright all you red papers. Follow me."
Genkai began to walk away. Just then two huge tough looking men came up behind
Genkai and started threatening her, like… "We are more than strong enough!" and
"Give us a fair chance." Genkai simply told them that if they had enough energy,
their paper would have turned red. They then became angry and charged at the old
woman. She then cried out and the men were thrown back by some force and crashed
to the ground, groaning in pain.
"I guess I really am getting old. Oh well… COME ON RED PAPERS!"
She said and opened the doors to the inside of the house.
"Here goes nothing…"
I thought, as we walked up the stairs and into the house.

Inside, the room was filled with arcade games and karaoke machines. What
was she doing with so many?
"I guess she likes to video games."
Kuwabara commented. Master Genkai then came down from the ceiling, standing in
a metal cage platform.
"The punching game will test your spirit's strength, the karaoke machine tests
your spirit energy's ability to adapt, and the fist game tests your spirit awareness. But
don't play the other games, those are for me."
Genkai instructed us. Yuske, Kuwabara and I headed over to the punching game first.
Kuwabara scored 120 points and Yuske scored 155 points. As I was about to go up, a
tall older man pushed me aside.
"Wow! This guy scored 187 points! That's more than that street kid with the
greased up hairdo!"
A man in the crowd exclaimed. Everyone marveled at the man's score.
"I don't care how strong he is. That was still rude to just push someone out of
the way just because they're younger."
I thought angrily.
"Hurry it up, kid!"
Someone yelled at me. I quickly walked up to the machine and pulled my arm back.
Then, with one mighty swing, I punched the game pad as hard as I could. The
numbers then began flipping wildly. They finally stopped on the digits… 300! All the
men around me awed at my score. I slowly backed away and went off to find Yuske
and Kuwabara.

The ones who scored highest were led outside to the edge of a huge forest,
which Master Genkai called "The Dark Forest".
"The ones to make it through the forest in one hour, will move on to the next
round. Understood? Good."
All of us lined up. She then fired a gun and we all took off. I hurried through, jumping
and ducking under and over trees and rocks.
"I hope I can help…"
I thought to myself.

**About 20 minutes later…**

I climbed up the grassy hill and saw Genkai standing under a tree. No one else
was in sight.
"Am I really first?"
I asked. Genki smiled and nodded.
