Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ Fox vs. Crow ❯ Loneliness ( Chapter 1 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
“Beautiful…” I sighed breathlessly. The sky was a shade of perfect blue. The sun was shining brightly and its warmth was soothing to the skin for the cold winter breeze had already arrived.
I have always loved doing this, nothing but observing the surrounding. On the roof of my loved high school, I was gazing at the beauty and serenity of the other buildings not so far from where I stood. There's something about the way the light plays upon everything that never fails to charm me.
“Sumire!” one girl shrieked at me. “Did you hear what I just said?” she chided, annoyed.
“Sorry…” I said in the most apologetic tone I could muster. I turned my attention to her. This is my friend, Botan, who I was just talking a while ago before I fell into the trance of alluring light. She was seated on one of the benches there just right behind me. She wore the same red and white uniform that I did for she did not wish to be questioned by anyone.
“Anyway, I remembered Hiei…” she said as she ran her palm through her long sky-shaded mop of hair.
“What do you mean?” I wondered what she was talking about. One minute she was blabbering about Reikai etc. and now Hiei… eh? …
“Well, I'm just quite amazed at the turn of events.” Botan mentioned.
“… I know what you mean.” I replied in agreement.
“Oh-huh. Who would ever think that even such a snobbish and arrogant fire demon could actually love at all and yet he is still the same old wretched demon he had always been.” said Botan.
“Yeah.” Was all I said but it was true. Hiei, the infamous demon that he is, had found love and not just love but real love.
“Quite unbelievable. He, being capable of love and still a dangerous fiend at the same time.” Botan went on.
“… I remember a friend of mine saying that `Love is very different from war'” I told her as I motioned to the edge of the roof. I clasped my hand on the steel railing and stared blankly at bluest sky that was infinitely high and crystal clear…
The school bell suddenly rang, disturbing the comforting silence that had befallen on us…
“Well definitely… that's really how women think!” she was encased in smoke and she reappeared dressed in her usual pink kimono holding her mystic oar in her palm. She rode on it and hovered close to the floor. “Tata! I'm off back to Reikai!” she waved gladly and flew off.
“Botan… what if it was a guy who told me that?” I whispered as memories began to cloud my mind… such memories of the past that I'd rather not recall.
“Karasu…” I could not stop myself from murmuring his name. I shut my eyes and did my best to thwart the flashbacks that were soon to come. I began to walk to the rooftop door. This was no time to reminisce… not now that the bell had just ringed and I'll be late for my class.
For one last time I gazed up at the sky. A soft breeze made my purple hair sway back a little. I faced the rooftop door and turned its knob and then I hastily went down the flight of stairs to hurry for class.
I sat there on my seat hearing the teacher scold two of my male classmates. We had just finished taking a surprise quiz that I easily perfected but now all the attention was on the two. My classmates were caught cheating and so that's what they get. All had their eyes and ears glued to the happening by the front but I didn't bother listening.
I glanced around my classroom. The board still bore the test questions and some unlikely chalk prints from other past writings that were not completely erased. Sometimes when you look long and hard at the black board, you can see some fascinating faint figures of different sorts that range from whales to birds and pointing hands to the demonic face of a horned evil. By the left side, there was a boxed announcement written by the class treasurer about paying some fees to be paid before the week ends. A `SAVE' was even written there so nobody would erase it. The platform was quite shiny although, if only there was no chemistry book peeking by the space between its two halves. We students obviously had our own secret agenda… of leaving behind our heavy books on hidden places that is…
The back part also had a bulletin board that had been divided into two parts. The larger part that took most of the space was covered with black paper and artfully colored and designed with colored chalk. The other remaining part was where the latecomers' and absentees' names were written. There were even four names of students that said `Excused' for they went to join this certain contest. There was so much to see in the classroom…
That class was the only highlight on my class hours…
Time seemed to just fly by, as I lightly tapped my pencil on the desk. Subjects started and ended. Teachers came and went. Halls filled and then hallowed by students. It was just another ordinary day but at last, finally the day had almost come to an end.
The bell rang and ended my last class to the joy of everybody. I gathered my things and went out of the classroom.
“You are coming with us?” I heard a girl with frizzy hair ask. She stood right next to me now with two other girls waiting…
“No…” I shook my head. “Not today…”
She and two other girls were my usual company after school. “Tomorrow then?”
“Okay… See ya!” I bid goodbye and then went straight to the staircase and I headed up to the 4th floor for I needed to chat with someone before I leave to go home.
Someone… I can't believe that now I just refer to him as `someone' when before he used to be `the one'… who? Kurama… yes, my Kurama… but mine no more…
The memory is still fresh. It was a big stupid mistake. How did I ever come to want to break up with him? How could I have let him go? What a fool I was and he then loved again… although this love was short-lived. Alas! This had happened too long ago. Right now, we remain as friends and nothing more… but I will never stop hoping…
I found him in the 4th floor hallway just to the right of the stairs. He was talking to a bunch of guys who surrounded him perilously. I smiled. Kurama had always been popular not only because of his looks but for his intelligent mind as well. As a prominent senior, he really was in constant demand and yet despite his popularity he is still the nice person that he is.
When he noticed that I was standing there waiting for his crowd to leave, he instantly spoke to his companions, ”Excuse me.” He walked towards me.
I sighed as he stopped before me with his brilliant smile and those green eyes that alone, could take my breath away…
“Hi…” he greeted still smiling.
“Hey…” I said smiling back. His red uniform suited him perfectly. I was practically overwhelmed by his presence…
“Ready for work already?!”
“Yup…” I answered. I and Kurama were officers of the Science club. Our coordinator assigned us to plan for the upcoming exhibit next week so we really had to work on it soon.
“I still have a class though,” he pointed out up at the wall clock that was right in front of us. “Sophomores should have eight subjects a day too!”
“Hah! Fat chance! It pays to be young!” I chuckled.
He grinned.
And for a while we just looked at each other… suddenly we were out of words to be said…
“Just come after your class…” I finally said.
Kurama nodded, “I'll see you later then.” With that he headed the other way.
I watched him intently as he disappeared to his assigned room.
I walked down the stairs with a smile. I was so glad he was coming over even though it's just for the club but I wish he wasn't just coming for that… but some things don't always go your way…
