A/N: Sorry about the formatting of my last chapter.. My new laptop is Vista and it doesn't quite transfer right to my desktop. I intend on writing fairly often again. I'll be hammering out chapters as often as possible… I need some ideas for what I should write about when this story is done.. which is coming up eventually..

Note: It's fun to listen to the chapter listening to Incubus' Love hurts or Al Green's I heard it through the grape vine.

Ch 38: Sweet Torture

Inuyasha had been standing in front of Kagome's door for what felt like a lifetime. The way she answered the phone threw him completely off guard. She said she couldn't see him.. why? Suddenly, Inuyasha felt as though his heart was suddenly caught in a vice. An idea seeped into his brain revealing the possibility he had hoped would never occur…
What if there was someone new? A name popped into his head… Hiten.. He had to know. He had to call someone who would know first hand.

“Sango?” Inuyasha knew he probably wasn't Sango's favorite person at the moment and hadn't been for the past couple of months.

“ Yes Inuyasha?” Sango said in a tense voice.

“Is Kagome dating Hiten?” There was no time for pleasantries so Inuyasha figured he might as well cut through the bullshit.

“ Dating isn't the word…”

“Then what the hell is it called?!” Inuyasha yelled, he took a deep breath… “I'm sorry. I'm real sorry Sango.. I just.. I have to know.” The moments before Sango responded felt like hours to Inuyasha. The suspense was nearly unbearable.

“ Sort of. She's seen him often for coffee or in between classes, but she's only had dinner with him once.” Sango heard Inuyasha sigh with relief. “Inuyasha, I think she's starting to get her life back together. Hiten's a good man, you should know he's your friend. She's moving on Inuyasha… Accept that.” Sango knew her words were fairly harsh, but she needed someone who could be there for her, specifically live in the same country as her. Kagome needed her to do this for her. It was for the greater good.

Inuyasha felt his blood boil for a moment at Sango's words. Kagome was his and she was meant to be with him. For a moment he was tempted to reveal that he intended on proposing to Kagome that fateful night, but thought that it was no use to tell her. If Kagome really was moving on, he'd let her move on. All he really wanted was his Kagome to smile and be happy once again.

“ Thanks Sango.. I guess I needed to hear that.” Inuyasha replied with a tone of disappointment.

“ I'm sorry Inuyasha, goodbye.” Inuyasha said his goodbyes as well and hung up. Less than twelve hours before he felt as though he was on top of the world. Imagining ways in which to reveal to his Kagome that he truly loved her and wished to spend the rest of his life with her. All within a few minutes his dreams were dashed and he felt hopeless once again.

He stood in front of her door for who knows how much longer when a familiar delicious scent captured his attention. It was the sweetest smell he'd ever come across, yet at this moment it inflicted him with the greatest pain he'd ever felt. Not daring to look up at his.. `No Inuyasha, not yours anymore.'.. At Kagome. Not his, someone else's Kagome. A slight gasp called his attention to the woman he loved and he couldn't help but look up at her.

“Inu-Inuyasha.” Kagome called out to him, a painful smile playing on her lips. “I..” She didn't know what she had intended to say, it was just something to fill the awkward void between them. Inuyasha stood before her, not a dream or figment of her imagination, but the man she loved.

“Kagome.” Inuyasha rasped before taking a bold step forward. Kagome visibly stiffened as he moved towards her so Inuyasha stopped after that first step.

Kagome wrestled with herself.. What had they fought about before? Why had she even moved out of their apartment? Why when they were so very much in love did they separate over problems in their relationship that could have been solved if they really tried?

They basked in each other's presence and tried not to spoil these silent moments together. Inuyasha stared at every feature of Kagome's face in an attempt to remember her exactly how she was at that moment and memorize the way she seemed to glow beauty.

Kagome's battle with herself was essentially lost when she found herself running towards Inuyasha and into his arms. She wrapped her arms around him, basked in his warmth and breathed in his scent.

Inuyasha barely noticed Kagome had started running towards him until she was already holding him. He wrapped his arms around her and buried his face into the crook in her neck. For a moment he felt as though she was his again and they were still lovers. His arms tightened around her even further feeling that he couldn't get her close enough to him. “Kagome,” He whispered before placing delicate kisses against her neck. “My Princess.”

Kagome looked into Inuyasha's eyes only to see pure love radiating in them and kissed him lightly on the lips. She pulled away much to Inuyasha's chagrin, but only to reach for her house keys. “ I want to unlock the door.” Inuyasha blushed a deep crimson and allowed Kagome to open the door to her apartment. “I've missed you.” Kagome admitted once the door was shut and locked. “I've missed you more than I—“

Inuyasha gathered her into his arms once again and this time allowed himself to let go. He had to take a chance and give into his emotions. He pressed his lips against hers and allowed her to make the next move. Her hand crawled up to his neck and Kagome's lips slightly parted and her tongue lightly swept against Inuyasha's lips in a silent plea for access. Inuyasha's tongue found hers and their two tongues engaged in a battle for dominance. Kagome pulled Inuyasha towards the bedroom while his eyes stayed trained only on her. Inuyasha laid her gently on the bed and straddled her body and bestowed loving kisses on what little skin was exposed. “My Kagome.” Inuyasha murmured against Kagome's forearm. “My only love.”

Suddenly, Kagome pulled away and stared frightened into Inuyasha's eyes. “We can't do this!”
