Original Stories Fan Fiction ❯ What Are You Doing? ❯ Lunch Date ( Chapter 4 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

I couldn't sleep much last night. There was just so much going on through my mind as I lay on my bed staring off into space in the darkness of my room. I called Alan earlier, right before I went to bed, just to see how he was doing after he left my house. He said that his father apologized to him, which was really great to hear. Sadly, Mr. Dunston still went off into the night somewhere, most likely to drink. Alan felt slightly better, despite his father's habit, and told me not to worry. After we hung up, my mind kept on drifting back to Kayla. I was sure there was something wrong with me because I couldn't even begin to fathom why in the world I was going to go out to lunch with a girl I've known for less than 24 hours. But I knew I just couldn't deny Kayla. I didn't know why I couldn't deny her. Or do I? I guess I don't even know anymore.

All I knew was I really wanted to see Kayla again. I was excited and yet I felt guilty that I was going to have a fun time with Kayla while Alan is having family problems. But he said not to worry about him and I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I went to hangout with a friend. I shrugged off the thought and pulled the covers over my body, slowing drifting to sleep.

"Mia! Time to get up! I'm leaving now!"

I groaned and took my pillow, placing it over my head to attempt to muffle the sound of my mother's voice. She took it away and lightly whacked me. "Come you lazy girl," my mom joked. "You are going to make me be late."

"O-okay okay. I'm up."  I yawned and stretched, getting out of bed. I followed Mom out of my room, went downstairs, and went towards the front door.

"Mia, honey," she said as she opened the door. "What are you going to eat for breakfast? You said you finished the waffle batter and I ate the last of the eggs last night."

I kept rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. "Don't worry, Mom. I'm gonna eat out with one of my friends."

"Oh really? Well that's nice. But do you need some money?" she asked.

"It's okay. I'll just use my money. No need to worry about me." I said.

"Alright if you say so..." She glanced at her watch and made a small gasp. "Oh I'm already running late! Bye honey I'll see you later in the afternoon." She kissed my forehead and dashed out the door. I placed my hand on the area my mom kissed, making a face as I do.

She always manages to make me feel like a child. I sighed yet I couldn't help but love my mom for who she is.

Since I had almost four more hours till Kayla would come by, I went back upstairs to my room to watch TV. I took my phone and the remote from my table and lightly bounched onto my bed. I turned the TV, which was across my bed, on and changed to a weather channel. I watched as the male meteorologist point to different cities and described the weather. He finally got to our city after mentioning 4 others.

"
It is going to be a sunny day. Clear skies all day and the temperature will be in the mid 80's."

"It's going to be hotter than yesterday," I said aloud. I tend to talk to myself when I'm alone. It's weird but I guess its something I picked up from my dad. Ever since I was little, I would always hear him mumble something outloud and he still does that to this day.

I decided to turn on my cellphone when I realized my phone was
already on. Aw frick... I left it on over night again. Good thing there are still two more bars left on my battery. I continued to watch TV, changing channels every now and then. I could not find anything good to watch, just mainly re-runs of sitcoms, soaps, and infomercials. As time passed, I felt my eyelids growing heavy and I slowing let my head fall onto my pillow. I yawned and snuggled into the pillow even more.

So tired... I'll just rest my eyes for only 5 minutes. That's not too long.... I'm sure Mom won't mind... I'll just put my phone near me as set the alarm clock feature... Yeah....

---------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

I felt and heard my phone vibrate as I started to wake up. I guess someone was calling me since it just kept on vibrating. I tried to focus my vision to see what was on the screen as I grabbed my phone. Not even bothering to care, I answered the call.

"Ugh... hello?" I said groggily.

"Um Mia? It's Kayla."

"Uwaah? Kayla? Um hey what's up?" I asked, still half asleep.

"Hey! I know this is kinda dumb, since I was the one who asked you if you wanted to hangout, but I forgot to ask you yesterday. Where do you live? And are you okay? You sound pretty out of it," she said.

Suddenly remembering about today's event, my eyes shot to my clock hanging about my door.
Holy crap! It's 9:53! Oh shiz oh shiz oh shiz oh shiz!!! "Errrr.. I'm fine. I'm totally fine," I said while attempting to hide the fact that I'm actually NOT.

"Alright if you say so. So anyway I need your address. Care to give it to me?" About a minute or two passed as I told her where I lived. She thanked me and continued speaking. "So are you excited to see me and to have a meal together?" Kayla said in a flirtatious tone.

"Yeah of course," I said nonchalantly, ignoring that tone of hers.

She laughed. "I'm glad. Well I'd love to talk more on the phone but I need to go to Mapquest.com to get directions to your house. Plus I'll get to talk to more you soon and get to look at your beautiful face."

"Flattery won't get you everywhere, you know," I responded, blushing.
I'm glad she can't see me right now...

"True, but it does reward me a cute blush from you."

"W-what!? N-n-no it doesn't! You can't even see my face!"

"If you compliment someone and they begin to stutter, then they must be embarrassed and must be blushing." Kayla giggled. "At least that's what I think. And usually  it is quite accurate."

"W-whatever... Don't you need to get going? You know... so you can find my house?" I asked trying to change the subject.

"Oh!" she exclaimed with feigned surprise. "I guess you are right. Well I'll be seeing you soon. Good bye my darling Mia!"

I hung up and dashed to the bathroom for two reasons: to freshen up and to look at the mirror to see how red my face was.

------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------

Kayla called me again to notify me of her arrival and told me she'll wait for me outside my house. I was almost done getting ready, still brushing my hair and putting it up in a ponytail in my room. I flipped my side bangs to the right, trying to get it out of my eyes. I was wearing a baby blue colored T-shirt with a black vest and denim shorts that ended just about an inch above my knee. I took my wallet and cell phone and tucked them into my mini purple Jansport backpack and hurried downstairs, jamming my house keys in my pocket on the way down. At the front door I sat on our wooden flooring and put on my black Converse shoes. I got up from the floor and opened the door. Taking my house keys out I locked the house, rattling the doorknob just to make sure it was locked.

Turning around, I saw Kayla at the end of my driveway, sitting on the hood of her car. The car was a silver convertable and it sparkled as if it was brand new.
I wonder if its even Kayla's car. She noticed me and slid off the hood, waving hello. Kayla was wearing sunglasses, a green and white striped baby tee, and khaki short shorts. I was surprised to see that her shorts were even a little above her mid calf, even though she was standing up. Realizing I was staring at her legs, I tried to rid my head of unnecessary thoughts and greeted her.
"I'm so sorry I took so long," I said. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting."

She shook her head. "Its alright. I wasn't waiting to long. But I hope you do not mind me choosing the place to eat. Does Charley's Diner sound good to you, Mia?"

"That's fine. I'm up for anything."

Kayla smiled and motioned me towards the car. I walked over to the passenger's side and entered, sitting down, placing down my backpack on the floor, putting on my seatbelt.
We started moving on the road soon after with Kayla driving the car smoothly. I couldn't help but glance at her from the corner of my eyes. She was gorgeous. She was mysterious. I kept on wondering why she invited me to lunch. I didn't mind. Not at all. I was thrilled. I am thrilled at the fact she did. But I want to know why.

"Mia," she said suddenly.

I snapped out of my thoughts. "Huh? Yes?"

"You alright? You seem quiet," she said, eyes fixed on the road.

"Yeah of course. I'm just not very good at starting a conversation," I said.

"Oh I see."

A moment of silence passed by in the car. I had wanted to say something but I couldn't find a topic we could start talking on. I didn't want to sound stupid and awkward.

"I'm sorry for asking you so suddenly. You know, to see if you want to eat lunch with me and all," she blurted out. "I hope I'm not making you uncomfortable."

"No not at all. I decided on my own to hangout with you. You don't have to worry about it."

Kayla smiled and let out a relieved sigh. "I'm glad." A few minutes later, we arrived at Charley's Diner. I got out of the car to see Kayla, out of the car already, waiting for me with a smile on her face. We both walked into the diner, a server already there waiting to seat us. Charley's Diner was fairly empty; there were only an eldery couple and a small family of three eating in the diner along with Kayla and I. The server escorted us to a booth that was just a few feet away from the entrance. Kayla sat on one side while I sat on the other. We were handed our menus and left to contemplate on our lunch. I looked at the various dishes they had, already feeling hungry for something. I decided on the Cheddar Bacon Burger. Putting my menu down, I noticed Kayla was staring at me.

"Um.. what is it?" I asked nervously.

"Why are you sitting over there? You should be sitting next to me." She pouted.

"I should be?" I questioned.

"Yes."

"Its okay... I'll pass.."

"Come on Mia. You know you
want to," she said, smirking.

I blushed and looked away from her gaze. I couldn't lie to myself: I did want to. I finally gave in and sighed. I stood up and went over to the other side to sit next to my friend. She beamed at me.

"Happy now?"

Kayla grinned. "I knew you couldn't resist my charm."

"Whatever. Just behave yourself," I said.

"Behave?" she repeated, an evil grin forming on her face. I cringed inwardly.
I have a bad feeling about this.
Before I could say anything, a waitress was heading our way. "Hello I'm Angela and I'll be serving you today," she said happily. "Would you like to start off with something to drink?"

I turned to Kayla. "Are you ready to order?" She nodded. "Yes we'll just order our food now."

"Sure thing. What can I get for you?"

"I would like the--" My voice got caught in my throat as I felt Kayla rubbing her leg against my leg ever so slightly. I shivered at the contact, a blush rising, and it didn't help that the both of us were wearing shorts. I began to stutter. "U-u-umm err I-I'd like the Ch-cheddar B-ba-bacon Burger w-with a s-s-side of f-fries..."

Our waitress tilted her head in confusion but still wrote my order down. She looked at Kayla "Alright... And for you ma'am?"

"I'd like a Caesar salad and the Crispy Shrimp Platter, please," she said, still stroking my leg and talking to the waitress with a straight face. I kept fidgeting under the table, trying to avoid her leg but there wasn't enough room. I felt my face getting hotter and hotter.

The waitress finished writing and took our menues. "Um excuse me, Miss," she said turning to me. "Are you alright? Your face is quite flushed."

Before I could answer, Kayla spoke first. "I think its just the heat. It is starting to get hotter, even at this hour."

Its definitely not the heat that's making me blush....

"Oh I see. Would you guys like me to get you some water?" she suggested.

Kayla smiled. "That'd be great." I nodded weakly.

"Okay, I'll be getting the drinks now. Thank you very much, ladies." The waitress took our menus and walked away.

As soon as the she was out of earshot, I glared at Kayla. "What are you doing?!" I said in a low hiss, causing Kayla to stop the contact. "I can't believe you did that to me. You're so mean!"

"I couldn't help myself. Your reactions are just too cute and amusing. Haven't I said that before?" she chuckled. I felt Kayla lean towards my side, feeling a familiar breath on my ear. "You should just sit back and let me take the lead."
"Kayla!" I said. I think I said it too loud because I noticed heads turning towards our direction, with questioning faces. I squeaked out an "oops" and bonked my head on the table. I am so stupid.

"Its never a dull moment around you," Kayla smiled. "I'm learning more about you almost every five minutes."

"Thanks..." I said sarcastically.

A few minutes later, our waitress returned with our waters. Soon after our food was ready. Both Kayla and I were hungry so in the end we mostly just ate our lunch quietly. There was no awkward silence, just a calm atmosphere in the diner. I looked up from my food to see Kayla smiling at me, food stuffed in her mouth, and I responded by returning the smile. We finished our food, our bellies quite stuffed. Kayla called our waitress over for our check, and she returned, check in hand, placing it on the table, and walked away. I began to take out my wallet from out of my backpack when I felt Kayla's hand preventing me.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Don't worry about the bill. I'll take care of it," my blonde friend replied.

"No way. You can't pay for all of this. I should be paying for my own food."

"Mia, its fine. I
want to," she said softly. "It isn't really fair to me that you have to pay when I invited you. If you really feel bad, you can make it up to me later."

"Alright then... thanks. I'll make sure to pay you back somehow."

"I'll be looking forward to it."

Leaving the money on the table, we headed towards the entrance. Our waitress noticed us leaving and said, "Bye ladies! Have a good day!"

"You too!" Kayla and I said in unison.

Just a few steps away from Charley's I turned to face Kayla. "I'm glad you called me last night to do this. I had a lot of fun. Even if you caused a moment of embarrassment for me," I added.

She laughed. "Well just because this little lunch date is over doesn't mean the day is."

"What do you mean?"

She grinned and took my hand in hers, our fingers entwined. "Let's go do something fun."

A/N: Sorry for the late update, but I have been really busy with school. I'm sure you all understand. Hopefully this longer chapter will make up for it. I also apologize if the ending seems rushed. I really wanted to finish the chapter. Well enjoy and thanks for sticking with my story!
