A man in the forties followed by a kid was dashing through the woods escaping the squad of soldiers that were after them. They ran as fast as they could toward a river where a small boat was waiting for them.
“Get on! I’ll hold them back!”, the older man ordered after realizing that the boat was too small for him and his son to get on.
“No! I’m not leaving without you!”, Echizen Ryoma cried.
The footsteps were approaching dangerously fast and he could hear the commands that were given. Without taking note of his protests, Nanjiroh threw him on a boat and kicked it to let him drift away.
“Father!” Ryoma called before seeing a squad of royal knights charging onto his father. He turned his head to avoid seeing the bloody scene as he could hear metallic shocks and screams. For once in his life he was worried about his stupid perverted father. For once in his life he felt alone and for once in his life he was alone as the boat drifted away from the blood covered bank.
He knew he wouldn’t see his father again. He knew that his father was strong after he experienced his strength in practice matches but a squad of royal knights, the elites of the elites, was too much to handle even for a master Nightwalker such as his father.
As the boat continued down the river, he could no longer hear the fight. He put his head on his knees and let out a sob and let himself drift away.

Ryoma woke up covered in sweat. It was that dream again. The day his father died when he was six and the day the whole Echizen clan was destroyed. Ever since that day, he stopped trusting anyone after being betrayed by the villagers who asked for their help to get rid of an obnoxious Ogre that was terrorizing the entire village. His only friend was Karupin, a young Damiyo he found and raised.
He sat up and closed his eyes, plunging himself back to those few years of liberty he had. Those happy memories of his friends and parents together with him was all he had.
He remembered very well the day the King of Illyria1 gave the order to execute every NightWalker in the kingdom. Hunted, he and the survivors of his clan fled and hid themselves near a small isolated village. They lived peacefully in the forest next to the village until one day and Ogre appeared out of nowhere and started attacking the village. The villagers were all farmers and fell one after another as they tried to get rid of it.
After a while, the mayor of the town came begging for their help. Seeing no choice, his father and some other NightWalkers eliminated the Ogre and saved the village. The danger gone, the villagers started blaming them for bringing the Ogre to their village for they had lived there for years and not even once were they threatened by such a foul creature.
They asked for them to be exiled and afraid that they might want revenge, the villagers asked protection from the king. Receiving information about the whereabouts of the wanted NightWalkers, the king immediately sent squads of his Royal Knights to finish what they started.
He and his father ran away only to be caught but by sacrificing his life, Ryoma's father gave him a chance to escape.
The first time he entered a city after that event , he had spied on a few warriors that was having a friendly fight and even managed to steal a few weapons much to there dismay. Using what his father already taught him, he lived in the wild to avoid the King's wrath. Entering the towns only to steal some necessary things, he quickly became a defted thief. Once, he almost got burnt by a magician for trying to steal a few of his books but he managed to get away and that was how he learnt magic.
One day, he found a lost sanctuary in a mountain. Because he was being chased by a pack of wolves, he hid himself within it. Noticing how the wolves did not dare to approach the sanctuary, he knew that something was wrong but if he went back out he would be wolfmeat.
Carefully going deeper into the lost sanctuary, he managed to pass most of the traps set to kill any intruders. He knew that he shouldn’t have gone deeper but he was too curious. Arriving in the heart of the sanctuary, he saw what looked like diamond ring.
The diamond was releasing an eerie glow while the ring was made of gold with strange symbols carved in it. He slowly approached the hexagonal column where the ring was laying.
Walking slowly towards it, Ryoma snatched it as quick then slowly stepped back away when he saw a huge shadow appear at the other end of the room. The room was so huge that he could barely see what was there. Wondering what it was, he had made a step forward but then remembered one of his father's old warnings.
Curiosity killed the cat.
Instantly turning around, he ran as if his life depended on it (which was quite true), he sprinted out of the sanctuary. He could hear the loud footsteps of something VERY big and heavy that was chasing after him. Outside, the wolves had disappeared but he paid it no mind as he dashed out of the forest as quick as he could.
He then met an old woman named Ryuzaki. She was a rich merchant that loved to collect magical artifacts. She bought his ring for a small fortune and told him about some people who specialized in treasure hunting. That was when he decided to make a living out of it.
Snapping himself back to the present, he quickly got up and took off his sweaty green tunic to switch it for a dark blue one. He had camped in the Enchanted Forest and the protective barrier he put up faded in his sleep and he was lucky that no monster came to wake him up for this forest was known for its dangerous magical beast lurking in the shadows.
He could see the sun rising gracefully above the Forest’s trees. He started packing his stuff, extinguished what was left of the fire and prepared to leave. As he was packing, his trusty mount started to act nervous and that was never a good sign, for a Damiyo’s senses were extremely keen and when one was nervous, it normally meant approaching danger.
“Calm down Karupin.”, he whispered softly as he pulled out his blades and got ready to defend his and Karupin’s lives wishing it was only a false alert.
His wish was not granted as he saw something move behind the trees…something very big .Suddenly a huge shadow appeared between two maple trees and jumped towards the young boy. He dodged it easily, taking note that it was an EarthSalamander. EarthSalamanders normally avoids adventurers and were the size of a soccer ball but with the recent unusual phenomenas spotted all over the continent, he wasn’t too surprised to notice that this one was actually the size of a grizzly bear which made him feel even smaller then he already was.
He saw Karupin distancing itself from the monster and cursed under his breath when he saw the Salamander go after his mount. He didn’t care that he wasn’t as strong as he would like to be because his Nightwalker formation wasn’t complete and might be severely wounded but NOBODY touches a single hair from Karupin’s head.
He leapt towards the giant reptile giving his blades an extra boost with magic and was relieved when he saw Karupin evade the attack that was meant to rip his head off. He quickly brought his fiery right blade down on the salamander’s right thigh. The giant amphibian spun around and let out a painful yelp, visibly annoyed that a little brat was interrupting his hunt, and darted his tongue out to give a fatal blow to Ryoma, who blocked it with his left blade. Pissed that his first attempt fell, the EarthSalamander focused his energy to cause a small quake to shake Ryoma off his feet.
When the apprentice Nightwalker regained his composure after jumping a few meters away, the monsters was already charging towards him. He positioned himself and activated a magic shield and braced himself for the shock, blades at the ready.
The rest happened so fast that when he realized what happened, the reptile was already burnt to a crisp and so was almost everything around it. When the Salamander was jumping towards him, a flash of light had blinded him for a moment and he heard the roar of thunder. Thunder??? How was that possible? There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky a few minutes ago, well, before the ugly amphibian showed up since he was focusing on kicking its ugly slimy butt ever since and didn’t paid attention to the weather, unless…
“Saa…I never thought I’d see such a big EarthSalamander here, in the kingdom of Illyria but it is true that a lot of strange things were recently spotted. Are you alright?”
He turned around to see a smiling young brunet dressed in a blue robe and a black cloak. ‘So that explains the thunder,’ he thought when he saw the long silver staff with a huge saphire on top with strange symbols running down the stick. ‘He must be a strong magician to be able to cast a lightning bolt so fast’.
“Yes. Thank you.” Ryoma mumbled as he went to fetch and calm Karupin who was traumatized by the magic spell the young man used.
There was a moment of uncomfortable silence while the spellcaster was observing him while he finally managed to calm Karupin and was getting ready to leave.
“I’m impressed,” the brunet commented on a cheerful tone. “I never thought that a boy your age would be able to resist such a big EarthSalamander or manage getting this deep in the Enchanted Forest. No, wait let me rephrase that. I never thought that a boy your age would even dare to approach the Enchanted Forest. My teammates and I are looking for strong fighters. My name is Fuji Syuusuke and I’m an Archmage. Would you consider joining our party?”

1: Okay I admit it I got the name from Twelfth Night(which I don’t own) written by Shakespeare.
Wow this is my first fanfic .It was based on a dream I had last night. I was watching Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring so I guess it had to be AU. Please forgive my poor English. I don’t speak English too fluently and I turned thirteen around 3 months ago. Sorry if it’s a bit OOC. Plz R&R suggestions are very welcome.
Thanks to my beta readers, Sailor Light Chaos and Laelitia, this story is probably more comprehensible. They write better than I do.

Nightwalker: Very agile fighters, they usually don’t like to fight or the sight of blood, they specialize in infiltration and are very good spies but because of rumors that were started by their previous victims, they normally aren’t very welcome.
Archmages: Very high class magicians who normally use elemental magic and have very powerful offensive magic.
Damiyo: I based that named on a minigame I found except that I changed the “dog” to cat. It’s a kind of giant wild cat similar to a cougar about the size of horse. They are quite agile which makes a perfect mount for well … crossing mountain IF you can tame one...
EarthSalamander: As you might have guessed… it looks like a salamander (any tailed amphibian of the order Caudata, having a soft, moist, scaleless skin, typically aquatic as a larva and semiterrestrial as an adult. (N/A: I took the definition here: but with elemental magic added which allows them to use ranged attacks. Their skin has the same texture and color as mud and can easily go underwater.
