Innocent Logic

Sakura found a new way to pass the time on her way to work. She took the bus to downtown Tokyo. Every morning, Sakura would stare out the window and let her mind wander. Sakura started making up little stories in her head. Nothing special. They started out small. Just a little girl going about her day. As all stories do, they evolved over time. The girl ended up on a quest. The journey kept getting more elaborate. In the beginning, the girl was alone. Pretty soon, she had a dog, a raven, a fox, and a monkey. They all helped her on her quest. Some details needed work. Sakura was okay with this. Not like anyone was listening anyway. She was just in her little world. She came back to reality when she had to get off the bus. The stories wouldn't pick up until the next morning. And this was fine. No one was listening, right?

That all changed one morning in mid-May.

Everything started out as normal. Sakura sat in her usual seat. Her imagination was running on high this morning. The girl and her companions were walking up to the Castle in the Sky. They stood at the gates. This was it. The big battle was here. The girl took the first step. She had her sword out. Who was the latest opponent? A dragon? No, too basic. Sakura frowned. It could be a monster. But what kind? Sakura tried to picture it. For some reason, she could see a froglike creature. Big silver eyes, large green head, skinny body, and… and…

Sakura squeezed her eyes shut. She could almost see the monster in her head. Almost. She shook her head. Maybe she could work on that later. Sakura went back to the adventure at hand. The girl walked up to the gate. She raised her sword. Her companions crowded behind her. The girl drew in a breath and chanted under her breath. The sigils on the gate started to glow. Suddenly, they opened with a pop. The adventurous group walked through. Everything was quiet; too quiet. This castle was like a tomb. Something wasn't right. Was this a trap? Where did everyone go?

“Hello? Anybody here? Hello? Hello?” The girl took slower steps into the castle. Step. Step. Step. Step. The animals behind her were getting nervous. Maybe they should go back? No! They came all this way! The party had to keep going.

Suddenly, they had shuffling in the background. The girl turned around. She held up her sword.

“Hello? We know you're here! Come out and show yourself!” The party braced itself to attack. Closer… Closer… The party huddled closer.

And then…

The bus pulled to a stop. Time to go. Oh well. Sakura rose to her feet and was ready to leave the bus.

“Aw, come on! You were just getting to the good part!”

Sakura whirled around. There weren't many people on this bus this morning. Who said that?

“Come on. Tell me. What happens next? Who was there?” That voice sounded so familiar for some reason. Sakura smiled as she put her hand to her stomach.

“Well come along and I'll tell you,” she said to herself. Sakura walked to work with her new audience in tow. She couldn't wait to meet them in the next four months.
