[ P - Pre-Teen ]
"I don't like the spring."

"Oh?"

"Not at all."

"How come?"

"Allergies."

"That's no reason to hate spring, though. Think of all of the pretty flowers! It's finally warm again, and you can swimming, and you can play sports..."

"You can play sports in the winter. And who says you can't swim in the winter?"

"Logical people...?"

"Hmph."

"You still haven't given me a good reason why you should hate spring so much!"

Aiko glared at him from across the school's picnic table. Jun pushed she glasses up his nose determinedly.

"Don't you turn eighteen in the spring, Saboru-kun?"

"What of it?"

Ugh! Why did Saboru-kun have to be so difficult? Spring was a perfectly wonderful time of year...!

"You have no decency, Saboru-kun!"

"I know that."

"Come oooooooon. Tell me what you hate so much about the spring."

"I don't know. The timing of it all."

"The timing?"

"Yes."

"What about it?"

"It's terrible timing, that's what it is."

"Saboru-kun. you're not making any sense!"

"People... leave in the spring."

"Like, on vacations?"

"Not exactly."

"Then... uh... studying for exams?"

She was trying here. Seriously.

"Where on Earth does someone go to study for exams?"

"The library?"

"Ugh. You're such a moron, Iwamura-kun."

"Don't make me hurt you, Jun!"

"Don't call me by my first name, Iwamura."

"And why not? We're friends, aren't we?"

"I don't like getting close to people."

"And why is that?"

"Because then they just leave."

"Like who?"

"My parents."

There was an awkward silence. Aiko suddenly felt deathly guilty.

"Oh."

"Mm-hm."

He was just idly eating his sandwhich.

"I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault."

"But..."

"You didn't kill them, now did you? No. So don't be sorry. I don't like people that apologize for things that aren't their fault."

Pause.

"Are you going to eat your satsuma sweet potatoes, Iwamura?"

"Yes!"

"Then I suggest you eat them before someone steals them from right under your nose, Iwamua-kun~"

"Give those back, Jun!"

He didn't bother to correct her this time, as he ducked underneath the picnic table with her food.
