Irvine x Selphie pairing

A/N: Woo-Hoo! I finally wrote a Selvine fanfic. I love this pairing!! Anyway, I DO NOT support Zelphie. I am 100% against this pairing in case you're wondering. Selphie and Irvine are meant for each other! So, anyway, read and please take the time to review, and tell me what you think. I am open for all opinions, even flames from Zelphie fans. I think Zell and Selphie are better at just being friends. Anyway...enjoy.

I'm thinking about making it into a little series, since I like fanfics like that, and I'm good at those too. So, this chapter is called Promises and Memories. Enjoy.

Disclaimer: Any smart person would know that I didn't create FF8, it belongs to Squaresoft. So, I'm not writing a disclaimer. (Whoops, already did.)

Chapter One "Promises and Memories"

Selphie Tilmitt gazed out her window. The rain pored down rapidly outside, she was thankful she was inside. Though she didn't like the rain, it had always gotten her thinking.

It has been two months since they defeated Ultimecia. Rinoa and Squall had become even closer since then, there is never a time you saw them alone. Seifer, Rajin, and Fujin came back to the Garden. Quistis was overwhelmed when Seifer had asked her to date him. It seems that Quistis had a crush on him for quite sometime, and same with Seifer. They have been a couple for nearly a month now. Zell on the other hand, had his hot-dogs with him. He never really needed a lover, but it all changed the day the library girl talked to him. They shared much in common, and spent a lot of time together. Even though they aren't dating, they seem like a couple. Rinoa and Irvine finally became SeeDs. As for Selphie, she had her eyes on a someone special too. He was so special, at least he was to her. He was so kind to her, and had always helped her when she needed it.

"Irvine..." Selphie mumbled under her breath, then turned to her side.

She and Irvine had always been close. Ever since she came to the orphanage they have been close friends. They always played together, and spent so much time with one another.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember as much as she could about the orphanage. Since she had used the GFs, she had forgotten most of the things that she experienced when she was little.

"Stupid GFs," She thought to herself, "Oh well, can't live without them."

She could only remember bits and pieces of things from her past, and she wondered if the others remember more or less then she does. The first thing that she remembered was the first day she came to the orphanage.

---

-Flashback-

Little Selphie arrived at the orphanage she has been sent to. A lady with long, black hair wearing all black came out to the gate to come get the her.

"Yes, it's so sad that her parents died the way they did, and she is so young. She shouldn't be experience all this." The lady who brought her there said.

"Indeed. My husband and I will take good care of her, don't worry 'bout a thing. There are a lot of children for her to play with, so she won't be lonely." The lady in black grabbed Selphie's hand and said good-bye to the other woman.

She led Selphie to the living room where most of the children were playing.

"So, your name is Selphie, right?" The lady in black asked.

"Yes," Little Selphie replied shyly.

"Well, my name is Edea Kramer, but you can call me Matron." Matron gave a warm smile that Selphie couldn't help but smile back at her.

Selphie examined the things around her. She noticed a boy with blonde spikes walk up to her.

"Hewo, my name is Zell. What's yours?" The young boy asked.

"My name is Selphie" Selphie smiled.

"You are new, aren't you? You will like it here, Matron is very nice." Little Zell walked with Selphie introducing her with the other kids.

"This is Seifer, he's mean." Zell pointed at Seifer, who just ignored him.

Selphie smiled at Seifer, and waved at him.

"And that's Squall, he's boring. All he does is sit by himself all the time." Zell walked on.

Squall stared blankly at the new comer. Selphie just waved and followed Zell.

"This is Quisty, she is kinda bossy, but you'll get used to it." Zell pointed at a blonde girl, reading a book.

Zell then pointed at another little girl, "That's Ellone. We call her 'sis'. We all love Ellone, especially Squall."

Ellone acknowledge Selphie and gave her a warm smile followed by a wave. Selphie returned the greeting.

Finally, Zell came to the last of the group. He was sitting in front of the t.v watching some cowboy show.

"That's Irvine, he thinks he's a cowboy." Zell pointed at Irvine.

Selphie couldn't help but giggle at Zell's comment. Irvine heard the laughter, and turned around to see who it was. He didn't recognize the girl at all, so he knew she must be the new comer Matron had told everyone about.

"Well, I hope you like it here, I'm gonna go play with some toys." Zell ran over to the toy box and threw some toys on the floor.

Of course, Quistis wouldn't let him get away without cleaning his mess up.

"Zell, you are making a mess. You should put the toys back in the toy box." Quistis said in a sisterly way.

"I will later, Quisty." Zell ran off, ignoring the mess.

"I'm gonna tell Matron on yooooo!" Little Quistis yelled at Zell, but he simply ignored it.

Selphie knew that she was going to like this place a whole lot. Everyone seemed friendly, and she was so excited about meeting new people. She giggled once more when she saw Quistis cleaning Zell's mess up. That's when it happened. She felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around to see who it was.

"Hey, wanna be friends?" Irvine asked Selphie with a shy tone.

Selphie's emerald eyes lit up. Irvine was actually the first friend that she had made here.

"Of course I will be your friend!" She chirped.

Irvine smiled, "So, Selphie is a pretty name, it fits you perfectly."

Selphie blushed slightly, "Thank you. Irvine is a nice name too."

Irvine nodded in agreement.

"Do you mind if I call you Sefie?" Irvine asked.

"Why? I like my name." Selphie looked confused.

"Well, Sefie is easier to say..."

"Oh ok then. Then I will call you Irvy." Selphie giggled.

"Ok! So, do you want to play a game?" Irvine asked.

"Sure!" Selphie and Irvine ran off together.

-End of flashback-

Selphie was surprised that she could even remember all of that. She and Irvine still called each other by their little pet names from the orphanage days. She closed her eyes again, and another flashback rushed forward.

-Second Flashback-

Selphie stood by the beach, letting the water touch her feet as the waves came up to the sand. She was a bit older now, about nine to be exact. Today was her last day at the orphanage. She was being sent to Trabia Garden. She didn't want to go, and leave all her friends behind. She didn't want to leave Irvy behind. She sat down and pulled her knees up to her chest.

"I don't want to go away." Selphie sobbed to herself.

"I don't want you to go away either." A familiar voice said.

Selphie was startled by the voice. She thought she was alone, but it seems she wasn't.

"Irvy, I'm gonna miss you." Selphie turned her head to face him.

"I'm gonna miss you too. You're my best friend Sefie." Irvine took a seat next to her.

"I'll always be your friend." Selphie placed her hand on his shoulder.

"Let's make a promise." Irvine replied.

"Ok, what kind?"

"Let's promise that we will never forget each other, and that we will meet again." Irvine played with some sand in his hands.

"Ok! That is a good promise. I won't forget it, and I'll never break it." Selphie said cheerfully.

"I want to show you something before you go." Irvine stood up and wiped the sand off of him.

He extended his hand out for Selphie and guided her towards a flower field near the orphanage.

"Are you sure we are allowed here?" Selphie asked.

"Why wouldn't we be?" Irvine replied.

"Cause there might be monsters here."

"No monsters here. They wouldn't be in a pretty place like this," Irvine pointed to a tree near by, "that's what I want to show you."

"A tree?!" Selphie said kinda disappointed.

"No, wait." They both walked over to the tree.

"What kind is it?" Selphie asked curious.

"It's a cherryblossom tree. Isn't it pretty?" Irvine tried to grab the petals falling from the tree, but he wasn't successful.

"It is pretty," Selphie said in awe as a petal fell on her nose, "achoo!"

Irvine giggled at her, "you remind me of a cherryblossom petal."

"Huh? Why?" Selphie titled her head to one shoulder.

"Cause, they are so pretty." Irvine caught a petal.

Selphie blushed, "thank you."

Suddenly, Matron came towards them, "There you two are. I've been looking everywhere."

"We're sorry, Matron." Selphie and Irvine said in unison.

"It's ok," Matron gave a warm smile, "Selphie, it's time to go now."

-End of flashback-

A tear rolled down Selphie's cheek. Just remembering that brought tears to her eyes. She couldn't remember much, but whatever she did remember, it wasn't much. She knew Irvine remember much more then she did, 'cause he didn't start using GFs until he joined with them a few months ago. Besides, he was the one who reminded everyone. Reminded...

Selphie felt horrible that she had broke part of their promise. She had forgotten all about him. It wasn't her fault though. She blamed it on the GFs which have made everyone forget.

She looked out the window again. The rain had stopped pouring down, and it was now coming down softly. It was a soothing sound to listen to when you were alone. She turned around to look at her clock. It was midnight, and she just couldn't fall asleep. She wondered if Irvine was awake, staring at the same moon with her. Selphie knew she had to get some rest. She had a test tomorrow, and she didn't want to fall asleep during it. She started to sing "Eyes on Me" silently to herself, and pretty soon, she dozed off.

---

Selphie was standing in the middle of a ballroom floor. She wore an elegant white dress that almost touched the floor. It had very skinny straps that held it up. A figure standing against the wall stared at her. She was nervous, but somehow the figure gave her a warm feeling. He shifted, then approached her.

"Can I have this dance?" He extended his hand to her.

"Yes, you may." She accepted his hand.

He was no longer a shadow in the corner of the ballroom. Now, you could see his face, and his beautiful eyes...

"I didn't know you could dance, Irvine." Selphie giggled to herself.

"Well, I guess I'm just talented." He teased.

The moment seemed endless. Neither of them wanted it to end, but pretty soon the song stopped, and both parted ways....

---

*Beep Beep Beep Beep*

Selphie jumped at the sound of her alarm clock. It read 7:00 a.m. She remember she had a test today, so she reluctantly got out of bed.

"How dare you interrupt my wonderful dream." She joked, and put on her uniform.

She went to her mirror and flipped her hair in it's usual 'ends flipped up' style. She winked in the mirror one last time, and gathered her materials for the day.

"All right, lets go." She said to herself, and left her dorm.

---

In the cafeteria, the group sat at their usual table. Squall had his head down on the table, apparently he was sleeping. Zell was cramming hot-dogs in his mouth, as usual. Quistis was helping Rinoa go study for her test. Since Quistis got her instructor license back, she was once again helping everyone study, but she always helped everyone study anyway. Seifer was just eating his breakfast, not bothering anyone. And of course, Irvine was winking, and tipping his hat at every cute girl that walked by.

"I need some more hot-dogs." Zell said with his mouth full.

"You shouldn't eat hot-dogs in the mornings. Why don't you eat a healthy breakfast?" Quistis offered.

"No way! Hot-dogs are good for me, and they are healthy." Zell stuck out his tongue.

"For you, maybe..." Seifer mumbled under his breath.

"Did you say something?" Zell hinting some anger.

"Nope, not at all, Chicken-wuss."

"Stop calling me that!!" Zell stood up.

"Ok, stop it you two!" Quistis stopped argument.

"I didn't start anything, it was him." Seifer shifted the blame.

"Enough I said." Snapped Quistis, then resumed studying with Rinoa.

"I'm sorry, Quisty." Seifer began to kiss up.

"I'm bored, and I need more hot-dogs!" Zell stood up and went to go get more hot-dogs.

When Zell came back he had three hot-dogs sitting on his tray. He started to put the first one in his mouth until a familiar cheerful person came running up, startling poor Zell, which made him drop his hot-dog on the floor.

"Hiya guys!" Selphie said taking a seat next to Irvine.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Zell screamed, "My hot-dog, I-it's RUINED! My life is over!"

Zell looked at his plate and noticed the two other hot-dogs, "Oh well, least I still have these."

Irvine chuckled, "You don't see that everyday."

Squall raised his head and looked around, "Did I miss something?"

Rinoa patted his back, "No honey, just Zell over reacting."

Squall nodded and placed his head back on the table. Selphie took out her notebook and opened it to her study guide.

"Hey, you guys wanna study with me too?" She asked Rinoa and Quistis.

"Sure, I'm almost done with Rinoa." Quistis replied.

"I'll study with ya, Sefie." Irvine offered.

Of course, Selphie couldn't refuse his offer. I mean, would you refuse an offer your crush made you?

"Woo-hoo! All right then." Selphie accepted.

The group, with the exception of Squall, spent the rest of the hour studying for the test. When the bell rung for class, they all parted ways. Quistis went to her class, Squall, being the commander, went to his post. Rinoa, Selphie, Irvine, Zell, and Seifer went to their class. They all had the same instructor, so they were actually quite happy about it.

In the classroom, everyone took their seat and spent the remainder of the time studying. Selphie and Rinoa sat together, Irvine and Zell behind them, and Seifer in the back of the room. The instructor came into the class and took roll, then reviewed over the test for thirty minutes. After he finished with that, he handed out the tests. Since Rinoa and Selphie studied, the test was really easy. Irvine and Zell took a little more time, but they finished early too. As for Seifer, he never even finished the test. He was too busy throwing paper balls at everyone, which he got in trouble for. The time was up, and everyone turned their tests in. It was about 11:30 now (a/n: it was a loooong test), and when the bell rung, everyone rushed to the cafeteria.

The cafeteria had a long line of people waiting for the hot-dogs, and of course Zell were among these students. Quistis had arrived with a rather large stack of papers that she needed to grade. Squall was too busy attended to everyone who needed to be attended to, so he wasn't there yet. Rinoa and Selphie were chatting about the test, and Irvine listening in.

"I hope I passed the test." Selphie said.

"I'm sure you did good. You and me did study a lot. So we should be fine." Rinoa replied.

Quistis looked around, "Where's Seifer?"

"He's in detention for throwing paper balls in class." Irvine chuckled.

"Yeah, he hit me with one. It hurt." Zell said sitting down in his seat.

"I'm just glad that test is over," Selphie put her head down on the table, "and I have to go to the Quad today too. I'm soooooooo busy."

"Planning the next festival?" Irvine asked.

"Yep! It's gonna be the Autumn Ball. Lots and Lots of dancing!" She clapped her hands together.

"All right, I'm definitely taking Squall!" Rinoa said.

"I can't dance." Zell said shoving a hot-dog in his mouth.

"There will be lots of hot-dogs." Selphie grinned.

"All right, count me in." Zell cheerfully said.

"I hope I won't be too busy so I can go." Quistis said grading her papers.

"It's gonna be fun, 'cause nobody can throw a party like Sefie can." Irvine added.

Selphie's face turned a crimson color. She really loved it when he called her 'Sefie.' She wondered if he liked it when she called him 'Irvy.'

"Thanks. Well, I better get going. I'll see you guys later." Selphie grabbed her belongings, and waved good-bye.

She headed towards her dorm and put her stuff away, then left and went to the Quad. A few of the other members on the festival committee where there too. They spent their time thinking of decorations, music to play, who was gonna make the posters, ect. After they finished, everything was settled. Since Selphie was in charge of the whole committee, she actually had to do everything, except make the posters that is. Everyone began to do what they were assigned to do. Pretty soon, everyone was finished after lots and lots of hours, and a poster was finally made. It had autumn leaves on it, and people dancing. It said in big, bubble letters "Come to the Autumn Ball on August 24. There will be tons of snacks, drinks, and music." That was the date, August 24. It was now July 11, so they had over a month to fix it all up. One of the students left to go make copies of the poster to put up everywhere. When he came back, everyone took some and posted them up on the Garden's walls. When they finished, they all left for their dorms, but Selphie stayed in the Quad.

"Phew, finally done," She said to herself, "it's gonna be so great."

She heard the sound of boots walking towards her, getting louder every second. She decided to look up to see who it was, only to find a man with a cowboy hat.

"Howdy." Irvine tipped his hat.

"What brings you here? It's 8:00." Selphie said exhausted.

"I don't know. I went to your dorm, and you weren't there, so I thought I find you here." He took a seat next to her, "you've been working hard all day, don't ya think you need to get some sleep?"

"I don't know, I was just thinking." Selphie closed her eyes.

"About?" Irvine curiously asked.

"A lot of things," Selphie opened her eyes and looked at Irvine, "I'm glad today is Friday, I get to sleep all day tomorrow."

"Yeah, me too. So like..." Irvine looked down at his feet, "are you going to the festival with anyone?"

Selphie's heart skipped a beat. Was he actually asking her to the festival?!

"Um, well no. Are you?"

"Well, I was thinking, maybe if you don't have anyone, we could, uh, like go together." Irvine finally spitted out.

Selphie felt like jumping up and down, and giving the cowboy a big kiss on the cheek, but she tried to remain calm.

"I would love to go with you!" Selphie screamed out.

"Really!? Wow! Ok then, I'll talk to ya tomorrow then. Bye!" Irvine excitedly jumped up and left.

Selphie spent some more time in the quad after that, then decided to go back to her dorm.

When she arrived, she brushed her teeth, and got into her night clothes, then hopped in bed. She snuggled up to her teddy bear, which she named 'Irvy' after her crush.

"I can't believe he asked me! I'm soooo happy. I can't wait to tell Rinoa the good news!" Was the last things she said before she dozed off into a deep sleep.

To be continued...
