Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ A Sohma Family Christmas ❯ Oh God! ( Chapter 3 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Hatori looked up from a medical journal he was reading and watched Shigure pace the waiting room. It had been 3 hours since Akito had been brought to the hospital, and that was 3 hours too long for Shigure. Panic had permanently set itself on Shigure's face and in his emotions it was manifested as well. He finally stopped pacing and looked over at Hatori,
“Do you think she'll be alright? I don't know what I'd do if she.....you know...”
“Died.” Hatori finished for him, “I'm sure the doctors are doing all they can to help her Shigure. She'll be fine.” I hope. He motioned to the chair next to him and Shigure took a seat; Hatori returned to his book once his cousin had settled down. Oddly enough, Hatori had wavering thoughts on Akito's situation and his fear showed in his eyes as he read. Shigure briefly looked over to see the look of anxiety and uncertainty in his cousin's eyes. He tapped Hatori on the shoulder, Hatori looked over, trying to hide his thoughts, but to no avail.
“Yes?”
“You really don't know if she's fine or not do you? You don't think she'll pull through.” Hatori put a hand in the air as if to silence Shigure.
“No one can say for sure what will happen Shigure. You're right, I don't know what will come of this. She was bleeding dangerously by the time anyone noticed....so as much as it hurts me to say this, Akito may die.” Shigure's eyes widened in horror as he grabbed his cousin.
“No! No! Its not true!!! She'll be fine!! She has to be!!” He started crying and embraced Hatori. Hatori returned the embrace and let his panicked cousin let it all out. It was about an additional hour before Shigure finally calmed down. Hatori noticed out of the corner of his eye that a doctor had appeared in the doorway.
“Can I help you doctor?” Hatori asked. Shigure's glance shot over to the doctor.
“Which of you is Sohma-san?” The doctor asked.
“We both are sir,” Hatori answered, “I am Sohma Hatori, and this is Sohma Shigure.” The doctor nodded.
“I was informed one of you is a doctor as well. Which would that be?” Hatori stood up,
“That would be me. What can I do for you sir?”
“Follow me.” Hatori looked back at Shigure, smiled slightly and followed after the doctor. This can't be good if he wanted to talk to me first, Hatori thought to himself. He followed the doctor down the long white hallway to a room at the end of it labeled “ICU- Intensive Care Unit”. Hatori shook his head as the doctor opened the door. The doctor moved aside and motioned for Hatori to advance.
There she was. Her frail body covered in cords attached to machines, a mask over her face forcing her to breathe and a frustrated furrow to her brow, eyes closed. Her face was deathly pale but the heart monitor beeped steadily, a good sign of possible recovery. Hatori froze on the spot. Unable to move. A hand on his shoulder brought him out of his rooted state. It was the doctor.
“She's alive at least. We've done everything we can, but she has lost a lot of blood. Perhaps you could give me more information as to what happened?”
“She had a miscarriage.” Hatori stated plainly, “Her body is far too weak to have handled another child. So she and my cousin...Shigure went against my orders and she got pregnant again. Her body shut down and then this happened.” The doctor stepped back in shock.
“S-she already gave birth?! A girl so tiny and weak?! How did that happen?” Hatori turned around and said,
“It was entirely an act of God. She wouldn't have been able to bear a child if it was anything but an act of God.” The doctor nodded.
“It must've been. There's no way a girl this fragile could have given birth to a baby unless it was some sort of miracle.” Hatori nodded in response. He then turned and walked over to the hospital bed. He took Akito's hand.
“Akito....you have to wake up. Shigure is very worried about you, and Shikito wants to know where her mommy is...” As if on cue, at the mention of the man she loved, Akito's eyes slowly opened. Akito looked over at Hatori and underneath her mask, she smiled weakly.
“Where is he?” she asked him, well below the audibility of a whisper.
“In the waiting room. I'll get him, would you like that?” Hatori asked her. She weakly nodded her head. Hatori smiled at her and went to get Shigure.
