Chapter 13
Akito’s Waiting
Hatori drove home to his empty office and opened the door. The hinge squeaked stridently.
“I have to get that hinge oiled…” he grumbled to himself.
Really it had been one of many things he had put off doing since Kana left. If he had been his own patient he would have prescribed some therapy or some Prozac but he was stubborn and didn’t want to admit he was depressed. He spent many a night lying alone in his bed and wondering if he would be able to face another day. He was sick of being the responsible one, the one who always carried out the orders he was given by Akito. Yuki was right. He was Akito’s lap dog. And he probably always would be, because despite his feelings, he couldn’t shirk his responsibility to the family. From the moment he was born he was tool to be used, first by his father, and then by Akito. And now he had been used again, this time a different function, but still the same tool. And even though Akito had used him, he didn’t feel angry with her or blame her. She was a tool as well…one used by the curse itself. He knew that deep down inside, she was a frightened little girl that never got a chance to live a normal life. No, right now, he was disgusted with himself. Logically, he knew that anyone, while drugged, could be made to do just about anything. But, whenever he read a story about such things happening, he always believed that those people must have had impressionable minds to begin with. So, he really couldn’t blame it on the drugs…he blamed it on himself for being weak-minded. Hatori took his coat off and hung it up on the coat rack next to the door.
“What am I going to do?” he said aloud. He sat down at his desk fully intending to get some charting done by morning and he ended up falling asleep. He woke up the next morning and sat up.
“What I am doing out here? What time is it?” he thought to himself as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and stretched walking over to the bathroom. He looked in the mirror and there was a Post-It note stuck to his forehead. He peeled it off and was about to toss it in the trashcan, when he notice it had something written on it…
”Akito-Meds-08:00 sharp!” he read. Looking at his watch he realized he was over an hour late already.
“Kuso!” he said irritably and he quickly donned his slacks and a clean blue shirt. He grabbed his bag and his white coat off the coat rack and hurried to Akito’s quarters all the while berating himself in his head, “Akito doesn’t like to be kept waiting! Kuso! Baka!”
In her room Akito paced back and forth like a lion separated by a sheet of glass from its prey.
“Where the hell is he! He is late! He knows how I hate tardiness! He probably spent all night with that fucking slut Miss Honda!” she screamed as loud as her frail lungs would allow. One of the servants ducked in the room and bowed low to wait for her to acknowledge him. She picked up a large vase and threw it at his head. It practically exploded on impact, cutting him in the process.
He cowered in the corner and apologized over and over again saying, “Akito-sama, please forgive my impertinence!”
She stalked over to him and wrenched him up by his collar. The front of it dug into his throat and it was clear he was having trouble breathing. Akito pulled him over to the door, opened it, and shoved him hard enough for him to hit the opposite wall of the wide hallway. Just as she was sliding the door closed, Hatori came up and knelt next to the bloodied servant. Akito was enraged.
She flung the door open and screamed, “HATORI! How dare you help a servant before you see to me! Leave him and get your ASS in here now!”
The servant was terrified at this point and apologized and then ran down the hallway. Hatori went into Akito’s room and closed the door behind him. He didn’t say anything to Akito about what transpired but rather waited for Akito to acknowledge him. Akito was leaning against the doorway and she had her arms down at her side and her fists clenched so hard that her short nails were digging into her palms and there was a thin trail of blood tracing from the wounds. Hatori could tell that she wanted to rip him limb from limb.
She turned around to face him, almost in slow motion, with an evil grin and her pale face and said, “So, you spent the night carousing with that slut last night, didn’t you? She probably kept you up all night fucking! That is why you didn’t have the manners to show up on time for me! You know I do not like being kept waiting! I am very displeased with you, Hatori. I thought we had an understanding and you are not usually disobedient. I will have to come up with an appropriate punishment.”
Hatori bowed low and said, “Akito. I am sorry I am late. It is true I was out late to Shigure’s house. It will not happen again. However, I was not having relations with Miss Honda.”
Akito stomped over to Hatori and grabbed a handful of his hair.
She pulled him up and looked him in the eye, “Hatori, if I ever find out that you are lying to me I will kill Miss Honda and her precious friends. And then, after that, I might have to kill your sweet little Kana and her annoying friend…what was it again, Mayu? Yes. Mayu. Without such “distractions” maybe you will be able to find time to see to me!”
She watched Hatori’s face and saw a slight twinge of fear, but nothing near what she likes to see in her victims. Hatori had always had a poker face, but she knew to even get a twinge from his cold heart meant she was truly hurting him inside and that made her happy.
She let Hatori go and smiled, “Okay, lets get this over with! I want to go visit Miss Honda today!” and she jumped up on the bed and lay down. Hatori swiftly checked her over and took her temperature, silently hoping that it would be high, it wasn’t.
“It seems as though you are doing rather well today.” Hatori said dryly.
Akito got up and headed towards her dressing room..
“Hatori, pull the car around. I will be out in a moment…I need to change.” She said, waving him out the door. She changed into her black turtleneck and pants and slipped on her loafers and headed to the waiting car.
At Shigure’s house the mood was notably lighter. Tohru had made everyone a nice breakfast and no one fought at the table for once. Kyou and Yuki actually were polite to each other. Shigure found this amusing as he could tell they were trying to be civil for Tohru’s sake.
He was about to say something about it but the phone suddenly rang, “Oh, I’ll get it!”
He said as he hopped up and answered, “Moshi moshi! Oh! ‘Tori! How are you?” Oh, not good? I see. We’ll be waiting.” He ended with grave tone to his voice.
Everyone at the table looked at him curiously.
Kyou finally spoke up, “So, who was it. You sure got quiet all of the sudden.”
Shigure sat down and said seriously, “It was Hatori. Akito is on his way over. He wants to visit with Tohru.”
Yuki stood up and took Tohru by the hand and started to drag her out the door.
“Wait, Yuki-kun! I am sure it will be okay! Akito-san doesn’t mean me any harm. I am sure…we might be able to have a nice talk and have some tea.”
Yuki pulled her even harder, obviously determined to have her leave before Akito got there.
“No! I think we should leave. I think we should leave, right now!” he shouted insistently.
Tohru, not wanting anyone to fight, decided to just give in and she and Yuki went into the forest to hide. Shigure knew that was pointless because Akito could sense Yuki wherever he went, but he kept that fact to himself.
