On the night the Empress gave birth, there was much celebrating. The Emperor had won the kingdom its independence from the other four countries - sadly to the cost of his life. The Empress was silent throughout the majority of the birth, only her face conveying the pain of the process.

The room was silent when the child gave its first gasping cry of life, his pale gold eyes silted and angry. The Empress, exhausted as she was sighed and pulled herself higher on the bed, then reached for her son. Smiling, she held her child close and then turned thankful eyes towards the mountains outside her window, and saw the glowing aura of the God of Kin Mon. The god, Seigyuu, turned and vanished from view, but the Empress knew he would return. Her son was his houshi now. Her son, the prince... "Kenja," whispered the Empress and nodded.

"My lady?" asked one of the many advisors, "My lady, you have chosen a name?"

The Empress nodded slowly, and sighed, "His name will be Kenja, for I know he will become a wise man."

The advisors and members of the court glanced at one another, unsure of her choice, but conceded. After all, their late king had adored his strange wife, and had always trusted her decisions.

"My Queen," whispered the midwife, "I should clean his highness. The prince should look fresh when we present him to the nation in the morning."

"The morning!" the general of the country's army said, aghast, "He should be presented now!"

"No," The Empress said with quiet stern, turning her own rich golden eyes on the much older man, "He shall be presented at sunrise, when both of us are rested, and I shall present my son, and no one else."

The room ran rampant with denials and outrage, for the Emperor or his advisors had been the only ones to present a new royal child, but the Empress sat quiet and held her son close to her breast, the young prince sleeping upon her.
At last, the midwife spoke above the noise, "Enough, all of you. Our Lord King has left us, and our new prince relies upon her majesty. None can dispute the wishes of her ladyship. Our country is our own now, and we should embrace the strength of our Queen and our new crown prince."

The room grew quiet, but more than a few of the advisors held their anger and perceived dishonor close to their hearts. The midwife swiftly cleared the room, and soon it was only her, the Empress, and two of the Empress's maids. The midwife gazed at the Empress and said softly, "You've made enemies this night, my lady. I only pray their anger will not pass onto your son... or poison the future of our young country."
The Empress only had eyes for her son now, her pale hand soothing over the bristles of dark ebony that graced her son's head, but she whispered back to midwife, "It must be this way. I have foreseen the greatness my son will bring about."
The midwife said nothing, knowing that the Empress's sight was always true, but she did not mention that she had noticed the dark shadow that was cast over the moon when the prince was born.
