Chapter three: Reborn again?

Darkness. That's all she could see. It was all around her, and it seemed to consume her. There was no light, or at least there wasn't. She noticed a small pink beam of light floating just ahead of her. She reached for it, and as she did so she started to hear a voice.
“Let it go.”
It confused her. Let what go? Instantly, visions of Inuyasha swirled in her mind, bringing tears to her eyes, as well as that familiar ache in her heart.
“You have to let it go if you want to be free.” The voice was sweet, but firm. She thought about it. He had hurt her, yes, it was true. But she had learned so much; Learned how to love and how to accept when one's love was not returned. She had made friends and laughed and cried and even…even she had strength. YesI have my own strength. I may not be Kikyo, but Kikyo is not me either.
Al…alright. I let it go.” And like an elastic band that had finally snapped, the darkness disappeared, and with it came a burst of red, pinks, and purple hues of light. She was blinded by the immensity for a moment, but soon her sight came back. She was standing on top of a very large hill. Or maybe standing isn't the proper word for it, more like being suspended by chains wrapped tightly around her body, the ends of the chains disappearing into the earth and pink red sky above her.
“Uh hum.” A voice in front of her brought her back from her mind's wanderings. A very beautiful woman dressed in armor stood before her. At kagome's questionable stare, the woman smiled.
“I am Midoriko and you're inside the Shikon no Tama that is now buried in your chest.”
Kagome nodded. That would explain the pink red sky.
Why am I in chains?”
“Why indeed. Those chains are from you.”
“Why would I…”
“Let me finish.” Kagome gave her a nod to continue.
“These chains represent the limitations you have placed on yourself. You will never be able to attain your full potential of power until you let go of these chains. All the thoughts you've had about your own unworthiness, or weakness has become links around your soul. Your power is great; greater than Kikyo's and greater than mine. You have to let go. Truly let go in your heart. Let go of the things that have been holding you back. “
“I thought I did let go. I gave up the idea of being with Inuyasha.”
“Did you really? Or did you really just give up the idea that he could ever love you because of your own shortcomings? And is Inuyasha the only thing who is holding you back? My dear Kagome, you give a whole new concept to the saying, `we are our own biggest enemy.'
Kagome awkwardly smiled. She was right. I am not only not Kikyo, and not only is she not me, but I am stronger than her. My heart has endured more from Inuyasha than she would have had she been alive. I have seen more horrors than she has seen in her last life or this. And I love more than just myself.
She could feel the chains slowly falling down her body, just like the tears she realized were streaming down her face. As soon as her feet touched the ground and the last of the chains had fallen, she ran into the open arms of Midoriko. Her body shook with sobs and an overwhelming peace that she had never before experienced. It was as if her soul was…free.
“Kagome calm down and listen.”
“You are now free and so is your power. It is wild and I am here to train you to control it. Do you wish to learn?”
Kagome could see the seriousness in her hazel eyes.
“Yes.”
“Good we will start now.”
Kagome didn't know exactly how long they sat on the hill, but much had transpired in that time. She learned about how to control her spiritual energy and purification powers, and how to separate the two. She learned how to form her energy into weapons, as well as mastering every sort of weapon imaginable. She mastered hand to hand combat and increased her speed to rival Sesshoumaru's. She practiced until, finally, Midoriko stopped her.
“You have learned all that I can teach you. It is time for you to go back.”
Around this time she started to hear voices.
“Unless of course, you are planning to steal my most important ingredient…”
“What is that?”
“It sounds like a battle is about to take place in your realm. We better hurry. I have a few things for you. Here is a sword forged by my miko powers, a fang from one of the demons trapped in here, and from one of the links of chains behind you. The sword is very powerful and will only obey you. The name of the sword is Ryoku. “
Kagome grasped the handle, reveling in how the blade seemed to sing in her grasp. Its' long slender blade gleamed as it met the hilt that was shaped like the head of a wolf. Where the eye would be was a red jewel.
“Here is a flask of what is known as `Angel Tears'. The ability to make it has long been lost, but it can heal any womb when applied. I believe it will be useful to you in the future.” Kagome took the light blue bottle and swirled it around, watching how the golden liquid on the inside sparkled in the pink light.
“Here is the best gift of all.” She walked around to behind Kagome and hooked a necklace around her neck. Kagome noticed that a sapphire dragon pendant adorned the intricate metal rope. “The dragon's name is Aikou. When you call upon him, he will come to your side. He will be your help.”
“Well, stealing is my job.”
Well killing is mine.”
“The voices are getting louder. It means that our time is about to come to an end. Last bit of information, you are not the reincarnation of Kikyo; you are your own person.”
“Well, who is that?”
“My dear, that is for you to find out.” Kagome smiled and gave one last hug to the older woman before her image slowly dissipated to be replaced by a brief darkness and then the fluttering of her eyelashes.
Her eyes opened to what looked to be an endless supply of green goo. For a brief moment she question if she had really just drifted into a weird dream, then she realized she couldn't breathe. Struggling to release herself from the inside of what looked to be an egg, and a very elastic like one at that, she also noticed a struggle outside. A very handsome demon was defending off a rather ugly creature…and looked to be losing too. As she looked closer she couldn't help but be reminded of Inuyasha, but yet there was something more elegant and mature about him. All of these thoughts were pushed away as she saw the hideous demon coming in for the killing strike.
Anger. It burst through her veins like lava, bringing with it the intensity of her power. The egg itself flew open as she stood up and walked over to the hideous demon. She didn't recognize his face, but his voice she recognized from inside the jewel as the one who brought her here. The demon on the ground was poisoned, she could tell from her increased senses and the smell of the infected blood that pooled around him. That only made her madder. I bet if he was well he would kill this demon easily.
She flicked the horrid creature from one wall to the next, and then squeezed his heart until he could take no more and gave into the call of death.
Walking towards the silver haired demon on the floor, she noticed his inching backwards and the subtle scent of his fear. That's what scared her back into reality. She didn't want him to be afraid of her. She was unused to anyone being afraid of her, but she definitely didn't want this particular person to be afraid of her; she didn't know why, she just knew she didn't.
“I will not hurt you.” She could feel her power seeping back into the recesses of her spirit. She watched as his amber eyes opened to gaze on her. Her heart sped up quickly at the intensity of his stare, and she couldn't help but smile at the relief she saw glaze over his golden irises.
“I'm Kagome, who are you?” She asked, moving a lock of hair off his lips. She couldn't help but be mesmerized by how her fingers tingled at the contact of his skin.
“Youko.” His body slumped, as if he had slipped into a deep sleep, which he had, she noticed, as she touched his face with the palm of her hand. She would have to heal him herself. Noticing the blood was beneath him and there didn't seem to be any wounds on front, she gently pushed him onto his stomach.
Deep gashes from the dead demon's claws marred his skin. Green slime bubbled out of the wounds, burning the edges of the skin, making it almost impossible for his demon healing to help him. Placing her hands at the bottom portion of his back, right below the gashes, she sent her spiritual energy through his body, looking for where the poison had entered his veins. Finding them, she pushed the poison back through the veins and out into the skin that it had went in through. Ripping his shirt off, she delicately wiped away the green as it seeped up out of the crevices of his wounds. There was no water for her to clean his wounds with at the moment, so it was up to this Youko to fight it off.
She sat back on her haunches, looking down at him. And then looking down at herself, she realized to her horror, that she was completely Naked. What the hell am I naked for? She'd have to find some clothes before this demon woke up again,…not that he hadn't already seen her naked! Oh, well hell, my day just keeps getting better doesn't it?!
Looking around she noticed that the chamber was filled with other eggs like the one she was in. Picking herself up, she sent her energy into all of the eggs, and watched with satisfaction as the shells broke and released their prisoners. Women and men plopped onto the ground, splattering the ground with green nastiness. Ewe, that's really disgusting. She listened for their heartbeats. She would have called them off as all being dead, but the soft thumping increased. They would live.
“Well, I guess I can take you with me. I'll try to find some medical supplies for you while I look for some clothes.” She whispered to herself as she hoisted the demon up, one of his arms looped around her neck, while her right arm dragged him around his waist.
She moved up the steps, leaning against the stone wall every now and then to catch her breath. They finally made it up the stairs, down four hall ways, when she found a room that held a clothing chest and a few bottles of ointments. The chest held an array of beautiful kimonos in ranges of colors from black and red to purple and green. There was one that stuck out though. It was black with sapphire and ocean blue roses and crescent moons. Green leaves decorated the stems that lined the sleeves. It was perfect. She quickly dressed and moved over to Youko who was leaning up against the wall. She would not use the ointments, she knew not what they were and her instincts were saying they could be poison as well.
The best thing she could do would be to find a spring away from here and wash his wounds so that they could heal properly. Again, looping the demon's arm around her neck, she headed in a direction she hoped would lead to a door leading outside. After a few missed turns, she stepped out into the sunlight, smiling as the warm heat bounced off of her face. They crossed the yard and ventured into the woods. Kagome followed her gut the whole way, until finally, the gurgling of a stream hit her ears. Sighing in relief, she dropped the demon by little stream. Dropping down on her knees, and cupping some of the cool water to her lips, she drank to ease the dryness in her mouth. Her stomach rumbled, realizing that it probably had not been fed for a week and it was now catching up with her.
“First things first.” She pushed the demon onto his stomach and rinsed his wounds until she was satisfied with the pink color coming back into the skin lining the slashes. His body was burning though. He must be having a fever to fight off any last minute toxins. At least I know he'll be alright.
“Now for food!” She quickly built a fire and watched as the flames burned to a healthy height. One thing she had never enjoyed; Hunting. To kill an animal for no more reason but to eat it was kind of sickening. But a girl has to do, what a girl has to do. This thought bounced through her head at the same time a rabbit bounced out of the brush. Silently she snuck up behind it and grabbed it by its neck, hoping to kill it before it knew what happened. It struggled before she twisted its' neck, and then it was still. Saying a quick prayer for it's' spirit, she looked around for a sharp rock. Finding one, she began to skin it. When all work was done, the rabbit was put on a stick and sat over the fire to roast.
Leaning back against an old log, Youko lying beside her, her thoughts waged war within her mind. Now what? Naraku is dead, so I wonder what else it is I need to do. I can't stay here any longer though. I have to go home. My family hasn't seen me in three months, and I need to get as far away from this place and its' memories as I can. His voice startled her.
“Why have you not killed me?”
