InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Burn Scars ❯ To See ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

I've recently been hit with many InuYasha ideas, but I've decided to start with this one, because I want to force my friend to read it.
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha in any way or form. Luckily for you, my friend introduced me to fanfiction, in which I can exploit the characters however I want.
Pairings: Inuyasha/Kagome is the only definite pairing so far. I plan to add fluffiness between Miroku and Sango, but any actual hooking up of the characters has not been decided yet.
Burn Scars
Chapter 1: To See
It had started as a normal day. Well, normal for Kagome anyway. She'd spent the night on the cold hard ground with her friends. In the morning they'd walked the rest of the way to the village where the well in which the link between the past and the present lay was. Kaede met them and they spoke of their adventures.
That day Kagome had been eager to return home. She'd been away from her friends and family for so long she missed nearly everyone in her own time. But she stayed to amuse Kaede (and because she never really wanted to leave her friends anyway.) Still, school was starting soon, and, though there had been offers to drop out, she planned to finish the year as soon as possible. After quick goodbyes, she ran to the ancient well and jumped in, reminding herself that when she fell she wouldn't hit the bones at the bottom.
Kagome landed softly back in her time. Yelling greetings to people who were probably inside, she climbed up the wall. She let her backpack drop for a moment to rest her shoulders and stretched her arms out.
She froze, her arms still up in the air.
`There's nothing there…'
She blinked her eyes. There was nothing… no house… no family… Just nothing…
Her arms dropped slowly as she began to see things: scorched wooden planks and various objects that looked oddly familiar, only burnt and shriveled. Red tape surrounded the area, and an ambulance stood off in the distance.
She couldn't quite figure it out, but something was wrong. She felt something wet slide down her cheek and touched it, pulling her finger back to see.
`A tear?'
Then it hit her full force, like a gust of wind knocking her off her feet.
She backed up into the shrine and tripped, falling to her knees.
And that's when she began to cry.

Shippo held up the bag of toys Kagome had given him. It was often she brought snacks and toys to play with, each of them fairly exciting until more were discovered. The kitsune dumped out the bag in glee, happy to have something to occupy his mind until Kagome returned.
He was surprised when something big and heavy fell out.
A book.
Kagome had brought books before, stating she needed to study. He'd never seen the books up close since she'd never really gotten a chance to take them out.
Shippo picked up the book carefully surprised at its weight. He opened it expecting pictures.
Well, there were pictures, but there were also numbers and equations and things that made him close it fast.
“What'ya got there, Shippo?” a voice said behind him.
Shippo looked up in surprise to see the white-haired hanyou, Inuyasha.
“Kagome left her book,” he said, holding up the thick text.
Inuyasha took it up and glanced at it disdainfully. “She must've forgotten it.”
A second later he realized it was out of his hands and being passed between Miroku and Sango. The monk held it up with curiosity while the demon-slayer attempted to decipher the pages.
“Isn't this the book Kagome fusses over all the time?” Sango asked, giving up on the strange equations.
“It must hold some value,” Miroku said, “Perhaps you should return it to her, Inuyasha.”
The hanyou snatched the book away from them and crossed his arms. “It's not my fault she left it. Why do I have to get it back to her?”
“'Cause you're the only one who can go through the well,” Shippo pointed out. Inuyasha dropped the book on his head.
“She can come and get it herself if it's that important. She doesn't even need to bring it in the first place.”
“Kagome would be very distressed without it,” Miroku said, “And if she knew you had it and did not return it, she might get angry.”
Inuyasha flinched. Kagome's anger was not a pleasant thing.
“Fine,” he said, pushing past them, “I'll take her damn book. She better be happy about this.”

Kagome didn't know how long she sat there. She didn't sob or make any noise; she just sat there with her eyes closed and let the tears fall down her face. It might've been minutes, or maybe hours. All she knew was time passed.
And then someone was behind her.
She knew somehow, before he spoke or even before he placed a hand on her shoulder, that it was Inuyasha behind her.
“What's wrong?” he asked, not sternly, because he could see she was crying.
She threw her arms around his waist and began sobbing. Slowly, he knelt down beside her and rested a hand on top of her head.
“What happened?”
She looked up at him, tears still running down her cheeks. “Everything's… It's all burned up…”
The hanyou stood, helping her up as he did so. “Come on, let's go check it out.”
Author(ess) Notes:
One quick question before I start to rant:
What exactly is the story behind Kagome's father? I've heard that he's died, and I've heard that he just left the family? I honestly don't know what happened. Someone please explain it to me.
Alright, this is my first Inuyasha fanfic (first of many to come) and I'd appreciate feedback. You'll learn quickly that I do not do long chapters. I'm sorry, but it's true.
Next Chapter: What happened to Kagome's family? (And what is her brother's name?)
