Chapter 5- Revelations

Kagome went on auto-pilot for the rest of the week, it was like she was swimming against the current. Her appetite waned, and she was never seen in the Lunch room at school anymore, she was always in the Library or the computer lab when breakfast or lunch rolled around.

She always avoided Inuyasha now and Inuyasha avoided her. Kagome couldn't figure out why there was so much pain in her heart. She knew there should be some pain, after all it wasn't every day that your best friend tells you that they hate you.

But she also knew that she shouldn't be overwhelmed in pain, even the librarian who was extremely uncaring about the affairs of her students was worried about the young girl.

It was Friday, the final day before the weekend came, that Inuyasha came into the Library during breakfast. Kagome had been checking books in when the door had opened and in he walked as though it was the most natural thing to do, the book she had been holding dropped from her hand, to bad it was the fifth Harry Potter book, and landed right on her foot.

She gave a small cry of pain and Inuyasha's eyes snapped over to where she was, their eyes met and she felt as though she had been welded to the spot by a welding gun. She gulped as his eyes took on a cold aspect, she bent down and picked up the book that she had dropped on her foot, she should've known that he wouldn't care, and that made the pain in her heart even worse.

“Can I help you?” she asked. He pulled a diskette out of the book bag that he had in his hand and showed it to her as she sat down in a chair to examine her foot to see if she had broken anything.

“Yeah, my printer went haywire last night and I have to have this printed off for my English class.” he said in the voice he used whenever he talked to strangers. Kagome nodded, and took the disk. She walked over to the computer that they used especially for this type of thing.

She put in the desk and opened the file and clicked the print button, she turned back to Inuyasha, and without her voice cracking from pain told him to collect what printed and take his disk and leave and go to class.

She went back to where she was checking books in, she heard him leave and sighed, her head dropping onto the Librarian's desk, this was almost to much to bear. Her best friend now hated her guts, and there was nothing that she could do to change the opinion of herself.

`This is terrible!' she thought as she brought her head up, tears welled up in her eyes and she hurriedly wiped them away, refusing to let herself shed any more tears over the half-demon that had caused her so much grief.

“Miss Higurashi, go get something to eat, or I'll ban you from this Library until you do!” Sensei Clemons commanded, pushing Kagome out of the Library.

The very thought of food made Kagome's stomach turn but she went to the cafeteria or at least tried to, a certain wind demon made sure that she didn't reach it. Kagura had the same look in her eyes that Kanna had, without thinking Kagome threw a charm at her without even looking.

Kagura cried out in rage and disappeared in a gust of wind, then the bell rang and Kagome went back to the Library, lying and saying that she had ate a pop tart, which of course she hadn't, but she was not going to risk being banned from the library, it was like her sanctuary.

She spent her entire day in there, able to forget the pain when she kept herself busy, which was exactly what she did, when Lunch came and Sensei Clemons forced her to go, Kagome grabbed a tray and ran outside to the small playground that the school had for the elementary children when they came to visit the high school.

“You should eat.” Kagome looked up from the swing that she was sitting on and there stood Koga, a worried look on his face. Kagome smiled and shook her head as he came to sit beside her on another swing.

“I'm not hungry.” she whispered. Koga sighed and scratched his head, she almost smiled, he hadn't been expecting her to say that, he was expecting her to say that she was sick, and she wondered briefly if she was.

“Kagome, you've lost weight and you're never around anymore, we're all worried.” Koga finally said. Kagome choked back a sob and Koga heard it. “What?” he asked.

“Inuyasha...he...” she broke down into sobs and shook as Koga stood up and pulled her up into his arms. He rubbed her back soothingly.

“What about the mutt?” he asked, trying to get her to stop crying with the annoying names that he called Inuyasha, it didn't work.

“He said that...he hates me!” she wailed into Koga's chest. Koga growled angrily and looked back up at the school, the bell rang and Kagome ran off, her tears still pouring down her face and Koga went in search of a certain dog demon.

Kagome however was in the girl's bathroom crying her heart out until she became violently sick, she wiped her mouth and slid to the floor, tears still occasionally sliding down her red cheeks.

The pain in her heart had grown to enormous levels, she had never known such pain existed in her life, her hand was at her heart and she clutched at it as sometimes the pain spiked but it mostly spiked when she thought about Inuyasha, and her heart would began to beat so hard that she thought it would leap out of her chest, causing her to clutch at it in pain.

She leaned her head back on the wall and sighed as the pain once again spiked as another image of Inuyasha flashed though her head, she closed her eyes trying desperately to get the picture out of her head, what was wrong with her?

Warmth flooded her cheeks as Inuyasha's smiling face came into her mind, she gasped as her heart skipped a beat, she gulped and shook her head, she stood up and walked out of the stall and saw that her cheeks were red and her eyes held a slumberous quality and she gasped as she realized why they held that look.

`I...I love Inuyasha!!' she thought, she collapsed as even more sobs racked her body. `I love him...and he hates me to death! What am I going to do?'

* * * *

“You are such a bastard!” Koga growled at the dog demon's back as Inuyasha opened his locker, Inuyasha whirled around to face his friend and gave him a look that said `what are you talking about?'

“Koga, I don't have a single clue as to why you're calling me a bastard.” but before Inuyasha could turn back to his locker Koga had punched him right on his jaw bone. Inuyasha looked at his friend startled by his actions.

“Thanks to you Kagome was crying her eyes out at lunch, she said that you told her that you hated her. You dumbass, I'd love to know what possessed you to make you say that to that poor girl. You belong in hell!” Koga said in disgust before turning and walking away.

Inuyasha turned around to his locker, he shouldn't care that he had put Kagome in tears, after all she was just as selfish as he was, then if he wasn't suppose to care, why was his heart crying out in distress at the fact that he had put Kagome in tears?

Inuyasha growled as he slammed the door shut, he was going to go crazy if he let his heart have control of his mind, he and Kagome were no longer friends, but why did his heart have to contradict that? He stalked out of the school building deciding to skip last block, it was just gym, the teacher gave you an A if you said that you liked the class, and he needed to think.

He let his feet decide where to take him and he was startled to find himself at the old Higurashi shrine, Kagome now owned it, but she had found that it had been to painful to live there with all the memories that the shrine held.

Inuyasha walked up the steps leading to the shrine, Kagome made sure that the shrine was still kept in good condition because people still came there to pray at the shrine house, Inuyasha walked up to the large tree that had been the first place that he had seen Kagome.

FLASHBACK-

A little girl of four twirled around happily as a slight wind blew, her dark hair flying into her face, and older girl, not much, sat leaning against the base of the tree, her hair tied back with a white ribbon as she studied a book.

Then she found herself being pulled up by the younger girl and the book dropped to the ground completely forgotten as the older girl seemed to be infested with the younger girl's energy and they danced around the large tree together. Inuyasha watched from the top of the steps as his mother and father talked to the priest, and they seemed to sense him. The younger girl came over and took his clawed hand.

“Come dance with us!” she laughed. Inuyasha joined them, for the moment all the worries of moving into a new city gone as he danced with the girls.

END

Inuyasha sighed, Kagome and Kikyo had been very close, they could've been twins, only Kikyo was about three years older than them, and she was much more serious about her studies than Kagome could ever think about being.

Inuyasha touched the place where no bark grew and sighed again, every time he was at the old God tree he was at peace even when he was the maddest that he had ever been in his entire life.

He sat down, his back leaning against the God Tree, his heart pounding in his ears. He wanted to stay there forever, maybe just drown in all his guilt and be found dead leaning against the God Tree, no that would make Meka go over the edge along with his mother.

`And what about Kagome?!' his heart demanded angrily, Inuyasha blinked then growled to himself. “Kagome wouldn't care!” he hissed to himself, even as a blush crept up onto his cheeks.

`Oh, she wouldn't, would she?' his heart chuckled gleefully, Inuyasha felt like ripping out the vital organ and telling it to keep its damned mouth shut and to leave him alone. The thought seemed to make the heart laugh even harder, Inuyasha growled softly.

`Listen, the only reason you are blushing like you are and why you feel so guilty about making Kagome cry is because you love her!' his heart told him. Inuyasha gulped as his cheeks flamed at the thought, then paled as the realization made complete sense to him.

`I...I love Kagome?!?!' he thought, his head thumped against the tree that he leaned on as he realized all the terrible things that he had said. `And the door prize goes to the jackass in the school uniform leaning against the tree!' his heart said sarcastically.

“Shut up.” Inuyasha grumbled as he walked towards his house, still trying to get over the fact that he had finally realized that he didn't hate his best friend like he had thought at first, but that he loved her beyond realization.
