Chapter 21: Dark secrets, still too dark to see

It had been three days since the party at Inuyashas house, and Kagome and him hadn't talked since then. After he kissed her, she pulled away and just looked at him in shock. She then quickly left not only the room, but she left his house and the party. For one glorious moment, Inuyasha thought that she was giving into the kiss and letting it happen. But it was clear that she wasn't exactly happy with his actions. They had seen each other now and again since the party, but neither of them knew what to say. Inuyasha and Sango hadn't even talked about their fake dating situation, so no one knew what was happening with that. Miroku was refusing to talk to Inuyasha, and was now blaming him for every problem that he had with Sango.

None of this seemed fair to Inuyasha. Kagome had Sango, Sesshoumaru and all of her other friends to talk to. Inuyasha didn't really have any one that he could actually talk to about this. What he really wanted to do, was to talk to Kagome. He wanted to know how she felt about what had happened, and he couldn't stand being cut off from his friends because of all the stupid stuff that was going on. There was a chance that talking to Kagome could make things worse, but at this point he really didn't care. He needed to talk to her about what happened at the party.

So after school when he saw her standing in the parking lot, clearly waiting for someone, he took the opportunity and decided to talk to her. She either really didn't notice him, or she was trying pointedly to ignore him.

"Kagome?" he said cautiously walking up to her.

"Hum?" she said looking up at him and realizing who she was talking to."Oh.....hi Inuyasha."

"Can we talk for a minute? There is something I want to talk to you about."

"Shoot."

"Well.....at the party," he saw Kagome tense up at his words, "you left without talking to me....I thought that what happened was something we should probably talk about."

"What is there to say Inuyasha?"

"I guess I wanted to explain what I did...."

"Oh that's ok, you don't need to explain. I know what happened."

This surprised him. "You do?"

"Of course. We got caught up in the moment, things happen. Obviously neither of us planned on that happening. It was just a simple mistake."

"Just a simple mistake?" Inuyasha asked in shock. "Is that what that was to you?"

"Wasn't that what it was to you? You are dating Sango and I'm dating Sesshoumaru, it was something that neither of us should have done. Lets just pretend it never happened ok?"

For a minute, Inuyasha was too stunned to say anything. When his brain finally caught up with what was going on, he finally said what he really thought.

"Is that really all that was to you? Just a little mess up in your perfect little life? It meant nothing at all to you?" He was begging her with his eyes to understand that it meant everything to him.

"Inuyasha, it's not like that between you and me. We are just friends. I am going out with your brother for heavens sake! How would he react if he found out about that? I can tell you that it wouldn't be good. This isn't up for debate. We are going to act like nothing happened." she said putting emphasis on 'going' and 'nothing'.

"But...." he started.

"No. This discussion is over. We are not going to go there. Please just drop it and lets be friends again."

He was going to try and make her see things his way. He was going to try his hardest to make her see that that kiss meant everything to him, and that he couldn't live with just being her friend. He was going to, until Sesshoumaru drove up in his white Porsche. This clearly was who Kagome had been waiting for because she walked towards the car, and got into the passenger seat. Sesshoumaru got out of the car and walked over to Inuyasha.

"How goes it little brother?" he asked.

"Oh everything is great," Inuyasha replied gritting his teeth in what he hoped at least kind of looked like a smile.

Sesshoumaru couldn't help but notice that Inuyasha was staring at Kagome, who was once again pointedly avoiding looking at him.

"Give her up Inuyasha. She is mine now, not to mention she is out of your league either way."

"Oh I'll never give up Sesshoumaru. It's just a matter of time before she falls for the real man." he said confidently.

"Dare to dream little brother," Sesshoumaru said returning to his car and his girlfriend.

When he got into the car, Kagome couldn't help but ask what had just happened.

"Oh, I was just passing on a message to him from our mom," he said straight out lying to her.

"Oh, ok," she said buying every word.

As Inuyasha watched the little white car get smaller and smaller, he felt his determination strengthen even more. He was going to be with Kagome, he could feel it, and he couldn't wait for the day that he could rube it in Sesshoumarus face.

With a plan already forming, he headed back into the school campus looking for Miroku. If this plan was really going to work, he needed his best friends help. As Inuyasha searched for him, he couldn't help but feel that another fight was coming on....

He finally found Miroku coming out of the study skills room. Inuyasha praised his good luck. If Miroku didn't have to retake a test that day, there was no way that he would have been at school still. Normally Miroku would practically run to the closest exit, hoping to get away from school as fast as humanly possible.

Hoping that this wouldn't be the last thing he ever did, Inuyasha carefully approached Miroku.

"Uh Miroku can I talk to you?" he asked

"Frankly Inuyasha I can't believe you have the guts to speak to me after what you did. Stealing Sango from me? Inuyasha you know how much that girl means to me. You know that I have been trying to get her to like me. How could you do this to me?"

"You really don't understand. I didn't take any one from you."

"You didn't take anyone from me? How about taking the only girl I've ever really cared about away from me?"

"Would you stop being so damn dramatic and just listen to me?" Inuyasha yelled in frustration. "I didn't really take Sango from you. She does not like me, never has never will. We weren't even really dating. We just pretended to because I wanted to make Kagome jealous, and Sango wanted to make you jealous."

"She wanted to make me jealous?" he repeated in disbelief. "Wait....did you just admit to liking Kagome?" Miroku asked with a smirk.

"So what is I do."

Miroku felt his eyes widen after that comment. That had not been the reply he had been expecting. "Oh.....well, sorry about hitting you in the face and all....I guess I kind of freaked out."

"Never mind that," Inuyasha said quickly. "There are much more important things that we have to deal with now. Miroku, I need to get Kagome back from Sesshoumaru. I'm going to need your help though."

"Ok....what sort of thing did you have in mind?"

"Well, I was thinking about it and obviously making her jealous didn't really work. I mean clearly it sort of worked, but not enough for her to break up with Sesshoumaru. Miroku, we have to find some way to make Kagome see that Sesshoumaru really is as bad for her as we all know he is."

"Alright after our little misunderstanding I'll do anything to try and help mate, but just one question. What is it that makes you think that Sesshoumaru is so horrible for Kagome anyway? Besides the obvious reasons, such as you liking her."

"Completely honestly, there is something about him that I just don't like. I really don't trust him, and Kagome is way to good for him. I just can't shake the feeling that he is using her."

"Using her? How would he do that?"

"See that's just it Miroku. That is what we need to find out."

So on that happy note, the two of them set of to find some dirt on Sesshoumaru. They didn't even really know what they were looking for, but since Inuyasha was Sesshoumarus brother they figured it couldn't be too hard. They were right, in a way. The only problem was, with the more information they found, the more confused they became.

It was now a late Friday night, and Inuyasha was in his brothers office reading emails, trying to make some since of everything. So far they had discovered that Sesshoumaru had his hands into a lot more companies then anyone thought. The ones he interacted with the most, were Tokyo Times, a newspaper, Griffith Interprize, and the American CIA. None of it made any sense...The more Inuyasha thought about it, the more confused he became.

Most of the emails he had read were to Griffith Interprize. Most of them were about a loud of nonsense....Talking about finally attaining the prize and reaching their goals. Inuyasha could only assume they were talking about some stupid sales or something. This wasn't helping at all..... Miroku had been excited when he found a letter Sesshoumaru had written to the Tokyo Times. The letter was Sesshoumaru paying them a very large sum of money so they wouldn't print a certain article. They thought that they had finally cracked something, and that they were going to discover some dirt on Sesshoumaru, but the article turned out being about some American CIA agent who had been killed. They couldn't get a hold of the actual article, just some vague details.

They thought that this had to be something too....It seemed that the newspaper, the company, and the American CIA had to be connected on this one. But the more research they did in the area, the foggier things got. It seemed that there was no light at the end of the dark tunnel, and all of their hard work had gone to waste.

Sadly, it seemed that Inuyasha was going to have to get Kagome the old fashioned way. That's right, he was going to have to charm her, and win her over. When Inuyasha told Miroku what he had decided, Miroku tried hard not to laugh. Well, so much for trying.
