Last Summer-Chapter 3-Rose Thorns

“It's so nice.” Sango said softly. She was sitting out on the porch in a swing she'd put together with her father when she was little. She sighed and grabbed her sketch pad.

“What to draw…” She thought out loud. The wind blew across her face, throwing her hair around gently. She lifted her head and embraced the wonderful feeling. The wind seemed to calm her down somewhat. Just a light breeze like this… she couldn't imagine living without a breeze… but here were places without wind… like Hawaii? Sango sighed… thoughts of Inuyasha and Kagome rushing through her head.

`They're probably just having fun together… like most couples do.' Sango had always loved the fact that her two best friends had finally realized how much they loved each other and got together but, she couldn't help feeling a bit jealous. She had always wanted a boyfriend, but just never had to will to ask anyone. Kuranosuke had asked her out a while back, but she declined and almost wished she hadn't. She didn't love the guy, but at least she would have been with some one, right?

`I don't have time to think about that.' She thought grabbing her pencil and beginning her drawing. The more she thought about Inuyasha and Kagome, the more troubled she became. Sango began a sketch of a girl, but she only drew one half of her before continuing on with the rest of the portrait.

All around this `half girl' were whole people, happy and alive looking. But in the girl's one visible eye, was nothing but sadness. Once she'd finished drawing the rest of the people, Sango returned to the girl, but mearly made the other half solid black, almost like a shadow.

Sango held the picture up to admire it. However, the sound of some one's voice behind her caused her to jump and drop the sketch book.

“You feel alone? Like the rest of the world is complete except you?”

Sango turned to see Miroku standing behind her. “Y…you understood it?” She asked in disbelief. No one had ever understood her portraits. As much as she'd try to explain, her friends were not `deep' enough to understand.

Miroku sat beside her and took the pad from her hands. “Of course.” He said looking over it. “You feel alone in the world… incomplete.” He said softly handing the paper back to her. Sango nodded and took the sketch pad from him.

Miroku sighed. “It's a nice drawing. You really have some talent.” He said.

Sango blushed and looked away. “You're just saying that…” Miroku shook his head.

“Do you have anymore?” He asked. Sango's eyes lit up. Was this guy honestly wanting to see more of her drawings?

“Uhh… yeah, come inside.” Sango said taking his hand and leading Miroku through the door.

Miroku stepped inside and followed Sango up to her room.

“My dad and brother are still asleep, so be extra quiet.” She warned walking up the stairs. Miroku nodded and followed after her. Sango walked into her room and quickly shut the door behind her. Miroku was astonished by the room.

Paintings on every wall, beautiful pictures and frames. He found one that he liked particularly, and grabbed it off Sango's dresser. “You look gorgeous here, Sango.” He said holding the picture out in front of her. Sango smiled weakly.

“That's not me.” She said taking the picture from him and placing it back on the dresser. “It's my mother before she died.” Miroku laughed nervously and nodded.

“Well, you and your mother look a lot alike.” He said. Miroku could tell Sango was already hurt, so he just dropped it. Sango turned and began rummaging through her closet for more portraits while Miroku inspected the walls. He saw something under her bed that caught his eye and dug it out revealing a beautiful painting. A vase of red roses sitting on a table. But if you looked just close enough, you could se the huge thorns going up the stems and inside each rose was a wasp. He gasped. “What about this one, Sango? Did you do this one?” He asked holding it out to her.

“I did.” She said. “I know it's a bit cheesy… no one ever understood what it meant, so don't even bother.” She said turning away and continuing her digging.

“You're afraid to fall in love?” Miroku asked. Sango shot up and gave him a curious glare.

“What's with you? How'd you know that?” She asked walking up to him.

Miroku pointed to the wasp and thorns. “Roses are usually a gift given from a boy to a girl as a love offering. However, each of these roses has a thorn and a wasp inside. Which basically means, that you fear falling in love and getting hurt because you don't look at the petals, you look at the thorns. The wasps are hidden, just like the problems in a relationship. You don't think about the good things that come from love, all you can picture is getting hurt.” Miroku concluded.

Sango shook her head in amazement. “Incredible.” She said softly. She laughed a small chuckle then took the picture from him, and placed it back under her bed. The sound of footsteps interrupted her. “My dad…” She whispered.

“Huh?” Miroku asked. Before he knew it, he was being shoved under the bed. “Get under there and just be quiet!” Sango barked as the door opened.

“Who were you talking to, Sango?” Her father asked opening the door.

Sango smiled and turned to face him. “Oh, hey Dad… Kagome just called me.” She said. “I had the phone on speaker and Inuyasha wanted to talk to me too.” She said, lying through her teeth.

Her father smiled. “Oh, well… I'm going to go get some coffee before Kohaku wakes up. He had a rough night last night, you know?” He said ruffling her hair. “You want anything?”

Sango shook her head. “I'm fine, thanks though.”

Her father nodded and walked out the door. Sango sighed and sat down on her bed.

Miroku groaned in pain.

Sango jumped up. “Oh, I'm sorry, Miroku.” She said laughing.

Miroku crawled out from under the bed, laughing. “You played it off, well, Sango.” He said smiling. Sango smiled. “Thanks.” She said. “You might want to get going though… who knows when Kohaku will wake up.” Sango said as a small kitten came into the room. She had cream colored fur and orange eyes. “Kirara!” Sango said picking her up and holding her in her arms.

“Kirara?” Miroku asked standing up.

“Oh, right.” Sango turned to him, with Kirara in her arms. “Miroku, this is Kirara, Kirara, this is Miroku.”

“Nice to meet you, Kirara.” Miroku said awkwardly.
Kirara mewed in response. Sango and Miroku both laughed.

“Well, umm… thanks for looking at my paintings.” Sango said.

Miroku smiled, but found himself drawn to the picture of her mother. “Sango… how did you're mom die?” He asked unsure of what kind of answer he would receive.

Sango just looked at the ground. “I don't want to talk about it… sorry…” She turned around facing the wall.

Miroku just nodded. “I'll see you around, then, Sango.” He turned to leave.

Sango gasped. She didn't want him to leave… She wanted him to stay with her. Why? Where on Earth was this coming from?!? Sango set Kirara down on her bed.

“You want to go for a walk?” She asked him. Miroku raised an eyebrow.

“A walk?” He asked. Sango nodded and grabbed his hand. “Come on!”
