[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

DISCLAIMER: I'll make this short and sweet. 'Inuyasha' and all character involved belong to Rumiko Takahashi and not to me. Any questions? No? Good, now on with the story.

This story has been posted before, under the same name. I was forced to remove it, due to complaints, but as you can see it is now rewritten and reposted, and hopefully I will not have the same problems with this version. For those of you who read my original version, this one has seen some changes in parts, and while the main plot of the story is unchanged I would still recommend rereading the entire story to avoid being confused.

CHAPTER 4

Another month passed at the Temple, and Kagome found that she had settled in nicely. At times it almost seemed as if she had been there forever. She was growing ever closer to the priests and Kaede. Sango, the village guardswoman, was quickly becoming one of the closest friends she had ever had, and the two were spending practically all of their spare time together. Yes, Kikyo was still giving her the cold shoulder and occasionally letting loose biting comments and scarcely hidden insults, but she was trying not to let that bother her. The fact that the rest of the Temple staff seemed to have almost the same opinion of Kikyo that she did helped a lot. Even Kaede, her own aunt, was losing the last of her patience with her.

Of course, she was still secretly pining over Inuyasha. She couldn't help it, something about him somehow managed to breach every defence she had. He was rude, stubborn and short tempered, but he was also honourable and his rough exterior hid a good and generous heart. Everyday she was with him, she found herself falling more and more in love with him. And everyday she felt her heart break more and more, because she knew nothing would ever come of her love.

As time went by, another painful thought started to work its way into her thoughts. She couldn't help but think about it one morning at breakfast, and it made itself known in her expression, worrying most of the others at the table.

“What's wrong Kagome?” Hojo asked, worriedly after while.

“What?” Kagome asked, startled out of her depressing thoughts. “Oh, nothing.”

Inuyasha snorted. “Oh sure, `nothing' has had you moping over your breakfast all morning like your puppy's run away. Out with it, what's wrong?”

Kagome bit her lip and looked down. “It's just, I miss my family and I wonder how they're doing. I never got a chance to say goodbye when I ran away and I haven't had a way to get in contact with them, let them known where I am and how I'm doing.”

Miroku looked thoughtful for a moment. “Kagome, you said that your grandfather was a priest at the Great Temple of Taisho in Lorinth, yes?”

Confused as to where this was going, Kagome nodded. She didn't see what that had to do with anything.

Miroku smiled. “Well then, the solution to your problem is easy. You can write a letter to him which we can have delivered to him there.” At the widening of Kagome's eyes, Miroku continued. “We have to send out news to various other temples and the like fairly often, and always manage it. All we need is to find a traveller who is heading in the direction we need, and ask them to deliver it for us. Usually the travellers consider it an honour to be of service to a temple and take great care to perform what is asked. I have never yet heard of one of our letters not reaching its destination.”

“That reminds me, I have a letter I want to have delivered to the High Priest at my temple in Lorinth as well.” Inuyasha spoke up, looking like he just remembered. “I wrote the damn thing months ago, but then I put it aside and forgot all about it. Don't let me do that again.” Miroku bowed as best he could while sitting at the table in understanding of his God's request.

“All this is well and good.” Kikyo spoke up, not even bothering to hide the distain in her voice. “But all of this is dependant on our newest `priestess' actually knowing how to write.”

“I can write just fine Kikyo.” Kagome spoke up, trying not to sound annoyed or upset, as she had learnt over the last few months that this just encouraged Kikyo to mock and insult her more. Besides, unlike boys, girls were not allowed in schools in their country, and any education a female received growing up was dependant on her family's wishes and their situation. “My grandfather taught me.”

“Well fine, it's still a huge waste of temple resources, but fine go and let your family know where their whore's got to.” Kikyo said disinterestedly, her attention back on her food. That is until she heard the sound of braking pottery from the head of the table, followed immediately by a small splash.

As one, everyone at the table turned to look at their God in surprise. At Kikyo's words, Inuyasha and brought his clay cup down so hard it had shattered, splashing water across the table. What surprised them all was the look of cold fury on Inuyasha's face, and his silence. When Inuyasha was angry he never went quiet. He yelled and screamed and threatened to beat you within an inch of your life. This time though, he looked as if he was so angry that words failed him. Everyone but Kikyo had a pretty good idea as to what had caused Inuyasha to react like this, even if they were surprised by it. Kikyo on the other hand was clueless, not seeing what she had done wrong.

Inuyasha was livid. For once in his life, he found himself so angry he literally couldn't speak. He was barely able to stop himself from jumping up and ripping Kikyo's foolish head off. He had heard Kikyo's insults and biting comments towards Kagome over the last few months of course; he would have to be deaf not to. She didn't exactly try to hide them. This time however, she had gone too far. He would not have allowed anyone to say something like that to any of his priestesses (yes, even Kikyo herself), and certainly not to Kagome. Enough was enough.

“Kikyo.” He finally managed to get out, though his voice was more of a growl. “I want to speak with you privately, in my chambers. Now.” Without another word, he got up and stalked over to the open door to his room. One really good thing about his room was that the long dead builders who had constructed this part of the temple had done an amazing job sound proofing it. Once the door was shut, he could yell as loud as he wanted and not have to worry about anyone else overhearing.

Confused, and a little scared by her God's obvious anger, Kikyo got up and followed him to his room, the rest of her breakfast forgotten. Surely it couldn't be that he was upset over what she had said to that whore who was still pretending to be a priestess… could he?

Once God and priestess had entered the room and the heavy doors shit behind them, everyone else got to work cleaning up the remains of breakfast. Somehow, no one had much of an appetite after that. They all silently hoped that maybe whatever Inuyasha was going to say would bring Kikyo back down to earth and make her easier to deal with.

***

Inuyasha didn't turn around to look behind him, relying on his nose and ears to tell him when Kikyo was in the room with him. Sure enough, she followed quickly, reeking of nervousness. As well she should be. Inuyasha had put up with her attitude for too long, and he wasn't going to anymore. This would be Kikyo's one and only warning, and he would make sure he got his point across. Once he was sure she had followed him far enough inside, he sent a burst of telekinetic energy behind him and shut the heavy doors, effectively blocking them off from the rest of the temple. Only once they were firmly shut did he turn around and look at her.

For a moment Inuyasha just glared at her, not saying a word. She quickly started squirming under his gaze, much to his satisfaction. When he spoke, his voice was still rough with anger.

“Kikyo, what you said to Kagome out there was unforgivable.” He said, his voice quiet and deadly serious. Kikyo began to grow even more worried by his voice alone, he never talked like this. “You had no right to speak to anyone like that, let alone someone who is your fellow priestess here at the temple.”

“But…” Kikyo tried to defend herself, only to be cut off before she could get another word out.

“Don't interrupt me.” Inuyasha snapped, becoming even angrier than he was a moment ago. “I'm not even close to finished yet Kikyo. I have a lot to say to you, and you will just stand there and listen and not argue with me. Is that understood?”

With a slight gulp, Kikyo nodded silently. She wouldn't speak again until he was done.

“Kikyo, the way you have been treating Kagome stops now.” Inuyasha said firmly. “You've been treating her like your inferior ever since she came here. You haven't even given her a chance to prove herself, you've simply assumed from the start that she was useless. You've been treating her as if she was less than the dirt under your feet, and everything that bastard of a prince said was true. I'm telling you now, it's not. Kagome is a wonderful priestess, and if you would pull your head out of your ass for one moment and actually take the time to get to know her, you'd see that.”

“It's not just Kagome either, your whole attitude for a long while now has stunk.” Inuyasha continued, while Kikyo just stood there in shock. “I know Kaede has warned you several times about that, but that you have chosen not to listen. I'm telling you now, she's not the only one who thinks that way. Your holier-than-thou attitude has been grinding on my last nerve for some time now. I've put up with you so far because until recently you've been a good priestess, and because I've been hoping that you would listen to what your aunt has to say. I can see now that that isn't going to happen. What's more, you're not as good a priestess as you seem to think you are. Especially not lately. Your work has been slipping for some time now, and it's just getting worse. You haven't been completing all of your tasks and when you do complete them, you're often sloppy. Also, you've been acting as if your spiritual powers make you some kind of superior priestess. I'm telling you now, Kikyo, spiritual powers do not automatically make a good priestess. Yes, they often come in handy, but they are not what being a priestess is all about. You're also not the only one who has them. Kaede has spiritual powers too, as I'm sure you're well aware, as she's the one who taught you how to use yours. And in case you haven't noticed, so does Kagome. In fact, while Kagome's powers are mostly dormant at the moment, she has the potential to become far more powerful than you could ever hope to be.”

Inuyasha sighed, the anger having slowly drained out of him as he spoke. When he spoke again, he just sounded tired. “Kikyo, you've been a good priestess in the past, and you do have the potential to become great. But you have simply not been acting in manner befitting a priestess for a long time now. I'm sorry to have to say this, but unless you shape up, I may have no choice but to let you go. I mean it Kikyo, unless your attitude changes, you start doing your work properly again and above all you stop treating Kagome the way you have, you will no longer be allowed to stay here as my priestess. I hate to do this, but you have left me no choice. I mean it Kikyo, I will not say this again. You have been warned. Dismissed.” At the last word, he waved his hand neglectfully to open the doors and walked tiredly past her and back into the temple's main hall.

Kikyo just stood there gasping in shock at where he had just been standing. He couldn't mean that, could he? He wouldn't really let her go? Over a little thing like that. Okay, yes maybe her work habits had slipped just a little bit lately, but only in the areas that weren't really important. Things like cleaning and such, that a priestess of her experience and power shouldn't have to do. Really, only the novices like Kagome and Kohaku should have to do such work. If this were a big city temple, even they wouldn't be forced to complete such frivolous duties; most of the big city temples had servants working for them. Why was he being so harsh with her.

Suddenly she clenched her jaw in anger. It was the whore, wasn't it? She saw the way that slut looked at their God when she thought no one was looking; she was just dieing to bed him. She had already caught Prince Naraku in her web of seduction along with the naive Hojo; now it appeared that even a God wasn't immune to her `charms'. Rather impressive actually, but she wasn't in the mood to be impressed. The bitch had turned everyone at the temple against her, even her beloved God. Now the slut was conspiring to get her thrown out of the temple, and taking HER rightful place at Inuyasha's side and as the future High Priestess. Well, Kikyo vowed, she wouldn't let that bitch get away with it. She would play along for now, she would act nice and buy her time. But as soon as she could prove what that whore was up to, as soon as she could win her way back into Inuyasha's trust, she would strike and the bitch wouldn't know what hit her. She, Kikyo was the greatest priestess, she was the one destined for greatness, and she would not let anything or anyone stand in her way.

***

A little later that morning, things were still a little tense around the temple. Kikyo had decided to respond to Inuyasha's words by becoming completely expressionless and silent. That wasn't exactly what Inuyasha wanted from her, but he figured for now he would take what he could get. He really didn't want to have to remove Kikyo from service at his temple, but after this morning he knew that he couldn't let her keep getting away with things like she had been. Kagome had tried to hide it, but he could easily sense the stress radiating from the younger priestess when Kikyo had started in on her, and he was sure he saw the beginnings of tears in her eyes at the `whore' comment. Then again, maybe he was so angry he imagined the tears. He hated hearing anyone he cared about being talked about like that, but with someone like Kagome who he full on loved, he was even more sensitive to their moods, and quicker to anger over them than usual. He was still angry even now, and the rest of the temple staff could easily pick up on it. He knew it was putting them on edge, but he couldn't help it. At least Kagome wasn't being subjugated to his moods right now. It was her day off, and had gone to spend it with Sango, as she had some free time today as well. With Hojo working in the garden, Kaede off checking on the now very pregnant Thea, Kohaku cleaning in the back rooms and Kikyo not talking to anyone, this left Miroku to suffer alone as he, Kikyo and Inuyasha got ready to handle the newest batch of worshipers.

Annoyed that he still had to deal with this, with everything else going on, Inuyasha wondered without much hope if there was some way he could justify cutting the proceedings short, or even cancelling them today. He didn't think so.

Rena stood silently outside the temple with her son and father-in-law by her side, waiting anxiously for the temple doors to open and allow worshipers in. She hoped that they would do so soon. She also hoped that her father-in-law had dreamed true and that the God Inuyasha would be able to answer their prayers.

In her hands she clenched the beautiful urn her great-grandfather, who had been a master potter, had made. The urn had been one of his greatest works, and had been passed down through her family for generations. She hoped Inuyasha would like it. Until recently, it had been considered her most treasured possession and would never have even dreamed of selling it, let alone giving it away. Now, she simply didn't care, she was praying for something infinitely more precious. All she wanted now was her daughter, or to at least know what had happened to her, so that her tortured heart could rest.

It had been over three months now since her daughter had vanished one night, and she knew why. She knew how much her Kagome feared and loathed the idea of marrying of Prince Naraku. She remembered full well her daughter's tears when she came home to tell her the news, had sworn that she had seen a vision of her future if she did, and that it was filled with nothing but darkness. Rena believed her, as weak as her daughter's abilities as a seer might be, she had still never been wrong. And besides, Rena had heard the rumours about Naraku herself, had heard how sadistic and cruel he was. If she were in the same position she most likely would have run away too. But still, her daughter's disappearance and even more so the fact that they had no idea what had become of her, was a hard blow to the entire family. Souta, barely twelve years old, had become withdrawn, so unlike his usual exuberant self. As for her father-in-law, Hermeros, he had been praying repeatedly to his God, Taisho, for a sign as to what had happened to his granddaughter. A week ago it looked like his prayers might have indeed been answered when Hermeros had awoken the household at the crack of dawn demanding that they all get up and pack for a trip. He swore until his face turned blue that the King of the Gods had appeared to him in his dream and told him that if he and his family travelled to his son's temple in the village of Ergos, and spoke to Inuyasha, their questions as to Kagome's whereabouts would be answered. Praying that it was true, the family was on their way by late that morning. Hermeros had no trouble getting a few days off at the temple, seeing as he claimed their God had given him his marching orders. Rena had a bit more trouble getting her employer to let her go, but in the end the old man had agreed knowing how troubled his assistant was by the disappearance of her only daughter.

So here the family was, waiting, and hoping that their questions would soon have answers. Even if the answers weren't the ones she wanted to hear, Rena had to know.

Although in reality it wasn't much later that the doors opened, it seemed to the family that an entirety had passed before the young priest in the strange bright red robes opened the door. Feeling desperate to get this over with one way or another, Rena forgot about good manners and pushed her way to the front of the crowd as forcefully as she could with the urn held in front of her, Hermeros and Souta hurrying to keep up. In the end, the family ended up near the front of the line, behind two fat merchants who frankly refused to be pushed to the back.

As she waited impatiently for the two merchants to make their offerings, Rena took the time to examine the God who she and her family had come all this way to see, the God her daughter had once dreamed of serving. He was smaller than she had imagined he would be, but his resemblance to the paintings and statues she had seen of him over the years could not be denied. She also couldn't help but notice that he looked somewhat annoyed. The merchants noticed too, and their carefully worded compliments faltered a bit. She prayed that he was not so annoyed that he would refuse to answer their questions.

Finally it was time for her and her family to step forward. Rena moved to the front of the group and placed the urn on the alter with a bow.

“My lord, this urn was crafted by my great-grandfather, a master potter.” She said carefully, hoping that maybe if he knew how precious it was to her and her family he would be more inclined to answer their prayers. “It has been a cherished possession of my family until now.”

It could have been her imagination, but Inuyasha seemed to sit up a little straighter and pay a little more attention to her after she said that.

“That is an awfully treasured thing you're offering.” He said, seeming to chose his words carefully. “Why give it to me?”

Hermeros stepped forward and bowed. “My lord, I know this is an unusual set of circumstances, but I am a priest of your father's temple in the city of Lorinth. A week ago he came to me in a dream and told me that if I and my family travelled here to see you, you could answer a very important question that has plagued us all for the last several months.” There was no denying it, Inuyasha was definitely sitting up straighter and paying more attention after that.

`My father sent them?' he wondered, surprised. He knew that most mortals would consider a story like that dubious, but the old man didn't seem senile and Inuyasha knew appearing in dreams was one of his father's favourite ways of speaking to his followers. He said it was much less disturbing for said followers than just appearing in front of them in the flesh. Still, Inuyasha wondered what they could possibly want to know that his father would send them to him.

“What's your question?” Inuyasha asked, extremely curious by now.

Hermeros looked relieved that Inuyasha was apparently willing to answer them. “My lord, three months ago, my only granddaughter ran away from home, desperate to escape a fate she considered worse than death. Since then we have had no word from her and no way to find out where she has gone, or what has become of her. My lord, we beseech you, if you know anything about her whereabouts or what has happened to her, to please tell us.”

Inuyasha was struggling to keep a smile off his face; he thought he knew where this was going but he had to be sure. “What's your granddaughter's name?”

“Her name is Kagome, my lord.” Rena spoke up, praying she would soon learn of her daughter's fate. To her surprise, Inuyasha let out a short laugh.

“Oh for the… I guess my old man's been paying more attention to what I've been doing down here than I thought. Miroku?” He said to his smiling High Priest after he managed to get his laughter under control. Miroku just nodded and went straight for the temple entrance at a brisk run, without a word. He knew where Kagome was, and would bring her back as soon as possible. She was going to be very happy about this.

Once the priest was gone, Inuyasha stood up and turned to Kikyo. “Kikyo, clear out the rest of the temple. I don't care how, but do it. I'm not taking any more offerings today.”

Kikyo was upset by the fact that they would have to miss out on so many valuable offerings, not to mention the fact that she was missing out on a chance to show Inuyasha that she, and not Kagome, was the better priestess, but she schooled her face to remain neutral and said nothing. She watched for a moment as her God lead the whore's family out of the main hall and into the hallway, most likely to the little used second audience chamber, before turning her attention to the worshippers who had watched the God leave in confusion. Raising her voice so that it would carry throughout the hall, she announced that the last worshipper was a priest of his father, who had been sent here by the King of the Gods himself, and had business with the God this day. Although the worshippers were disappointed they left, many vowing to return tomorrow.

Once they were all gone, Kikyo turned her attention to the meagre offerings on the alter. That had to be an all time low for all the time Inuyasha had been in residence in the temple. Well, at least the two merchants had between then given a fairly large amount of gold. As for the urn left by Kagome's family… well, even Kikyo had to admit it was a work of pure art. It was just a pity it didn't include any real gold in it's design, that would have made it truly spectacular, but even without it Kikyo was tempted to keep it for herself. In fact, the only thing that stopped her was the knowledge that it belonged to the whore's family, and as such Kikyo was determined that she wouldn't take it even if she was paid to. She would not have in her possession anything connected with that bitch.

On the bright side, maybe this would help open her deity's eyes to the fact that the bitch wasn't as innocent and honest as she claimed. No family could own things like this and remain humble. Maybe this would help open Inuyasha's eyes to the power hungry little whore that Kagome truly was. Feeling better, Kikyo let a nasty smile cross her face as she carried the urn and the gold the merchants had left towards the storage area.

Meanwhile, while all of this was going on, in a small house in the village, two women were sitting down at a table partaking in a friendly conversation as they shared a light lunch. The two were unique amongst the village women; a priestess to their beloved God, and the only woman on the village guard. But both were well respected by their fellow villagers, and what was more, both were good friends. The two had clicked almost instantly when they first meet, and had had many conversations like the one they were having now. They had shared a laugh earlier over some embarrassing stories of their younger brothers, and then another over the latest exploits of a certain perverted priest. But now, they had moved on to a more serious topic, Kikyo.

Kagome had just finished telling Sango of everything Kikyo had done to make her feel unwelcome since their last one of these discussions, especially what had happened that morning at breakfast and how Inuyasha had then taken Kikyo aside for a private talk that had had the other priestess in silence ever since. When she was done, Sango sighed tiredly.

“Honestly, I can't say I'm surprised, with the way she's been acting lately.” Sango said, looking annoyed. “I'm glad that Inuyasha finally took her aside and set her straight. Hopefully whatever he said to her will stick. The whole damn village is getting sick of her attitude. It's not just you Kagome, she's been a pain in the butt since long before you came here.”

“So I've heard.” Kagome said. “I just wish I knew what I did to make her hate me so much. Honestly, I also wonder what she did before I came that would allow people to put up with the way she acts all the time.”

Sango sighed again. “She wasn't always such a bitch. Both of our families have been in this village for generations. We grew up together, although we were never exactly what you would call friends. She was always rather standoffish, and proper. Me, well I'm the only woman on the village guard, that should tell you everything you need to know. We were never close, but I will tell you this; I used to respect her as a priestess. Before Inuyasha came, she was dedicated to her duties and never complained about them, not even the chores that you said she's been slacking off with. She was learning healing from Kaede, and seemed to be as dedicated a healer as a priestess. She might not have been close to many people, actually I don't think she was close to anyone, but she was polite and tried to help people as best she could. Everyone respected her. But then Inuyasha arrived and she started having delusions of grandeur. That's when she started to change. It was rather slow at first and most people didn't take much notice of it with everything else that was going on. By the time we noticed how much she had changed, she was the bitch we all know and hate today.”

“I just don't get it.” Kagome said softly. “How could someone who was so good turn so rotten?”

“Answer that question, and you'll have explained the mystery that is Kikyo.” Sango said with a sigh. Kagome was about to change the subject when suddenly the door burst open and Miroku stumbled through.

The next few days were great for Kagome. She was so happy to see her family again. While she did still have duties around the temple and couldn't really get out of them as the other priests and priestesses all had work to do of their own, her family decided to help solve that problem and still spend time with her by helping her with them, talking the entire time about everything they had missed in the last three months.

Her family was thrilled, and filled with pride. Not only did they now know that she was safe and happy, but she was finally the priestess she had always dreamed of becoming. Hermeros was almost bursting with his pride, knowing his granddaughter was one of the precious few who was chosen to serve a God directly, and told her repeatedly that he always knew she was destined for great things. With the exception of Kikyo, her family also got along splendidly with the rest of the temple staff. Kohaku managed to have a few meaningful talks about the kinds of things that was expected from a new priest with Souta, who was expected to start looking for a temple of his own to serve before much longer. In the past he was never really sure which God he wanted to serve (unlike his sister, whose problem came from the fact that the God she wanted to served had seemed bared to her) but after only a few days in Ergos he had no more doubts. He wanted to be a priest of Inuyasha. The boy had been in absolute awe of him almost from the first moment he saw the Dog God. So, for that matter, was the rest of the family. They were all so happy that Kagome had found such a wonderful God to serve.

And so things went for a good solid week. Everyday the family would arrive at the temple just after breakfast, and stay until just before dinner at which time they would return to the biggest inn in the village, who's owner had offered to put them up in one of his rooms for free after hearing that they were the family of the temple's newest and already much loved priestess. Before that they had been camping outside. Finally, it was decided they needed to return to the city and their lives there, and so one morning nine days after they had arrived in Ergos, Rena, Hermeros and Souta returned to the temple one last time to say goodbye to Kagome. This time though, they would know where she was and knew that they could and would see her again.

The family was standing outside the temple, and was just about to leave when a voice from the temple steps called to them and told them to wait. Looking over, they were surprised to see that Inuyasha was standing there with the urn they had left him as an offering and a scroll in his hands.

“Don't leave without this.” Inuyasha said calmly, coming over and placing the urn gently in Rena's hands. The woman was so shocked she almost dropped it, but managed to hold on.

“My lord, I gave this to you, it is yours now.” Rena objected. “You gave me everything I could have wanted in return and more when you returned my daughter to me.”

Inuyasha grinned slightly. “I didn't do anything, you just happened to come to the place where your daughter was staying, that's all. I can't in good conscious accept payment for something I didn't do.” Seeing that she was still about to object, he held up the scroll he was also carrying and said, “If you want, there is something you could do for me. I need to have this delivered to the High Priest at my temple in Lorinth. If you feel the need to repay me, you could take this to him.”

Looking relieved that she was asked to do something, Rena bowed as best as she could with the urn in her hands. “My lord, I would be honoured to deliver your message for you.” Unlike Inuyasha, Rena could not carry both the urn and the scroll without dropping something, so Hermeros took the scroll from the God instead.

Once the family had left and was out of earshot, a grateful Kagome, who had been standing nearby and heard the whole thing, turned to bow to her God. “My lord, thank you. That urn was my mother's prize possession, the only heirloom my family has. I know she is deeply grateful for you returning it to her, as am I.”

Inuyasha simply shrugged, trying to keep the blush off his cheeks at the words coming from the mouth of his secret love. “Like I said, I didn't do anything worth that kind of payment. Come on, breakfast is served and we're likely to miss out if we don't hurry.” Kagome smiled and followed her God back inside.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

I said this when I updated an earlier chapter, but in case anyone didn't read it here it is again. Ancient Greek was spilt up into `City States' which were independent of each other although they were all considered to be part of Greece as a whole, and each City State had it's own ruler and group of rulers as the case might be. Most that I have heard about were Kings, but Athens elected their rulers, Sparta had two Kings that ruled jointly and there may have been more ruling methods that I have not heard about. Naraku in this story is the son of the King of the city state of Lorinth, and at this stage the heir of that city alone, not all of Greece (or whatever I might decide to call the land, haven't really thought about that yet).

Also in ancient Greece, school were open to boys, but not to girls. Girls were educated by their families, or their families' slaves, if their elders wished it.
