Chapter 4
Something about this strange girl completely eluded Inu-Yasha. She'd called him aniki, but that couldn't possibly be true. His mother had died when he was young, and his father died even before she did. The only way she could be his sister is if she was a half-sibling like Sesshomaru. Half-sibling, all demon....he really didn't need another one of those. But for some reason he felt drawn to her. He couldn't keep himself away any longer. As much as he'd like to deny it, he'd always had a soft spot for pups. He tried to hide it with Shippo, and it was usually easy since Kagome was around to take care of him. But this one, friend or foe, had no one. He shut his eyes tight. And tried to think of other things. Don't do it. It's a trap. She'll kill you, that little bitch. She wants to kill you. She's an enemy. A trickster. Enemy. Enemy. Enemy. He kept repeating that over and over, trying to convince himself. But it was to no avail, and when he opened his eyes he found himself kneeling on the ground, his haori sleeves almost completely covering both women as he pulled them in close. He didn't know what he was planning to do after that, but it wouldn't have mattered if he'd planned anything anyway. The girl stopped sobbing immediately, and pulled out of his hold. He was little surprised and stayed there holding Kagome for a moment, looking at the girl standing among the trees. She was standing as if she were bracing for an attack, and although there were tears running down her dark brown cheeks she wasn't sobbing at all. Both Inu-Yasha and Kagome listened as the girl said in a voice that was steely and calm,
“No. It means nothing this way. You don't remember anything. You have to remember. You have to know. Follow me.” She turned on her heels, and started in the direction of a nearby stream. Kagome suddenly realized that Inu-Yasha's arms were still around her, and got up quickly. She didn't have to look to know he was blushing. She followed the girl down to the water's edge with Inu-Yasha close behind. The first thing the girl did was scoop a handful of water up, drink a little, and wash her face. Oddly enough, Kagome looked to Inu-Yasha and realized he'd started to do the same thing without even knowing it. Must be a dog-thing... She thought. The girl stopped then, and looked around the area. “I'm too tired now. We will rest. Then I will tell you everything.” She leaped up into the fork of a tree trunk, settled herself, and fell asleep quickly.
“Huh. Well, that's...different.” Inu-Yasha said. Kagome started to laugh softly. “Oi! What's funny, wench? You don't just take a nap anytime! I'm telling you, she's a crazy!”
“Then you're crazy, too.” Kagome could see his temper flare, but she felt she needed to make her point.
“What are you saying?!”
“I'm saying think about how you sleep every night.” His eyes widened as he made the connection, then narrowed with annoyance. “See what I mean? That's the way you sleep every night. Don't be such a hypocrite.”
“Hmph. Well, I do it so I can see you and the other pitiful humans well enough. She does it for no reason at all!”
“Oh, forget it. Just sit down. Now that she mentions it, I'm tired, too.”
Inu-Yasha sat cross-legged in the dirt, his back against a tree trunk. As usual when they were alone, Kagome set herself in his lap and settled in, resting her head on his chest.
“Oi! I'm not your personal chair, y'know.”
“Could've fooled me.” She knew he loved being this close, but he would never admit it. As was his custom, he set his chin down on her head and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. Within minutes, he could feel her muscles get heavier and her breathing slow. Both women were asleep, and Inu-Yasha set himself to the task of keeping watch.
