Back at the riverside...

The taijiya stopped walking and gazed up at the sun-setting sky filled with shades of pink and purple she never knew existed. She'd forgotten how beautiful the sky could look at dusk. Everything seemed to be settling down for the night. As the surrounding animals and insects stopped making their evening noises, the atmosphere seemed quiet. Even the river sounded as if it were calming down for the night.

She startled him when she stopped, and it was as if her hand commanded him to stop as well. He followed her gaze and looked. Failing to understand what caught her eye, he asked, “What is it?”

“Hmm? It's nothing. It's just been a while since I've noticed the sky like that. It's so beautiful. I mean, we're always fighting or trying to find shelter. So it's not like I can just sit down anytime I want. Things aren't like that anymore. Not since…” she broke off. Oh, if only Kohaku was back. Things would be perfect. She sighed, not wanting to think about laid ahead.

Sesshoumaru had stayed quiet long enough. More than once he had wondered how his brother seemed to have so many in his pack. He could never understand why they would even want to hang around a hanyou like Inuyasha. And that miko who seems to care so much for him. How is it that she was able to care so much for him when he always went after that dead clay pot? Kikyou should die and stay dead. I don't see how anyone could see anything worthwhile in her.

He knew the full story. He knew it, even if his brother didn't. She loved him, but not the way she should have. Not in the way you love a mate. She only wanted him to be human so that she didn't have to guard the Shikon jewel anymore. Kikyou's ultimate wish was to use the jewel so that it would disappear and she could finally live a normal life. But how did he ever manage to fall in love with her? She just had to get in the way of everything. Now there would be no hope for his brother. In love with two mikos and still hasn't properly wielded Tetsusaiga. Tssk.

It was bothering him too much. He needed to ask her. “Sango, what about your family? Do you ever go visit them? Because you are always with my brother. Do you not miss your friends and family?”

“No!” She yelled and walked away, the sunset forgotten. Kagome hadn't bothered her with that question in a while. But then again, Kagome knew the situation, and was in the situation. Even still, they had decided not to bring that up again until they killed Naraku or he threatened Kohaku's life. And now she was upset. Sango went and sat by a tree a few steps away from the river's edge. She drew her legs up and laid her head down on top of her arms and sighed. Clenching her eyes shut, she forced herself not to cry. She'd never had anyone to besides the gang to care enough about her to ask her about her family. Not that there was anyone to have asked. Her whole village had been wiped out, and left her devastated. And what was she supposed to do while Naraku took control over her only surviving family, sit back and wait? No! She had already made it her mission to avenge the deaths of the villagers. But ever since she met Kagome and the others, Naraku's death meant so much more now. She would stop at nothing to see to his demise.

Even if that meant risking her life to get Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha to work together. But why, oh why did he feel that he needed to ask her now? Did he pity her because he found her hurt? Maybe there was something more underneath the surface of the taiyoukai that no one else could see, something that made him stop and take notice of her and ask her about her family. Although she saddened at the previous question, that one little gesture made her feel warm inside. Maybe that one thing that no one could see was Rin. Perhaps there was something more that no one else could see.
