Disclaimer: Nope, not yet. I just want Sesshy.
Sesshoumaru was quiet as he sat down beside her. Maybe she just needs a friend. I guess I will have to make do, since my baka brother and his friends are not here. He didn't touch her, just simply sat beside her and waited patiently.
As she used the sleeve of the white kimono to dry her tears, she looked up, a bit startled to see him sitting there. Sango lifted her hand towards his streaming silvery hair. She needed something to partially distract her attention if she was going to tell him the story. Then something fuzzy in the corner of her eye caught her attention. It was his fluffy white pelt that he always wore draped over his shoulder. She reached her hands to his shoulder where his fluffiness seemed to extend.
Why is it that everyone woman seems to be more fascinated in my maki-maki-sama than in me? Sesshoumaru thought to himself. He figured he would ask again, but give her hands something to do while she told him. Maybe all she needed was a little distraction. He let fluff off its usual perch on his shoulder and gracefully moved it into her lap. A small sign of happiness seemed to appear once more in her face.
She ran her fingers gingerly through the soft burst of cloud that appeared in her lap. Wow, it's even softer than Kirara's. “How is it that no matter how intense you get in battles, it never seems to get dirty?”
“Hmm,” he chuckled a little. “I used to ask my father the same thing when I was young. I always wanted to be like him, you know. Like father, like son. I will tell you the same thing he would tell me. I honestly do not know why my maki-maki-sama never seems to get dirty, as you put it. But honestly, my father would always say that it was more of a miracle than anything else. He said that it was the one thing that would shut me up when I was a pup, when I was first born. That I loved to play with his until I was old enough to have my own. But now, it is just a part of me, part of what I wear. I don't really think about it too much, I guess.”
“I've always wondered, why is it that you brother doesn't have one as well? Is it because he's not a full youkai like you and your father?” She pondered aloud.
“No. It's mostly of status in my family. The first-born male would always bore one,” he answered her. When I have my first son, then he will bear one as well.”
“Oh,” she replied, finally meeting his gaze.
“So, what about you family and friends?” hoping that she was ready to talk.
She grew quiet. “I don't have any, they're all dead. That is, everyone but Kohaku.”
“What do you mean they are all dead? And who is Kohaku?” he asked with great concern.
Sango quickly dropped her head, and concentrated on the task of playing with his fluff. “Kohaku is my brother. And everyone from my village is dead. Because of Naraku.”
“Naraku?” he questioned.
“Hai, Naraku,” the taijiya replied as she began her story. “It happened a while ago, right before I met up with Inuyasha. Naraku had disguised himself as an important lord who needed my village's strongest demon slayers. So a bunch of us were called to this one village where we had to defeat this huge spider youkai. Everything went wrong; my brother was possessed by him and killed the entire village. And almost killed me as well; and since Naraku wasn't pleased, he had someone to kill us, but I got away in time. Naraku told me that it was a hanyou named Inuyasha, but when I went to confront him, the truth came out about Naraku. When we all went back to find Naraku, I found out that my brother alive somehow. Turns out that Naraku is keeping my brother alive with the help of a shard of the Shikon Jewel in order to try to kill us off,” she paused. “You've met him before.”
“I have?” responded the youkai in disbelief.
“Yes. He was the one you tried to kill that time when Naraku kidnapped Rin.”
“Oh,” he grew silent. “Wow, I am sorry. I had no idea.”
“It's okay. It's just that no matter what I do, even if we kill Naraku and get my brother back, it still won't bring my family and the rest of the villagers back,” she bit her lips, forcing back the tears. “Plus, if I do get my brother back, where would we live? We'd have to find another village that would let us stay there. Not to mention the fact that in a few years, or maybe less, I will have to start looking for a husband. And I'm not ready for that. But I can't go back and live life as it was. I'm not even sure if I'm ready to settle down.” He stared at her just taking in all she had to say. “Plus, no guy wants me. No man ever wants a woman who is stronger than or just as strong as they are. Besides, no guy wants a woman who isn't feminine enough. And that's not me. I don't dress it; I don't look it, and the scars on my body from battling say otherwise. So basically—”
Sango was cut off as Sesshoumaru leaned over to kiss her lips. The taiyoukai didn't know what else to do. He wasn't that good at communicating his feelings since his mother died when he was a teenager. He listened to his inner youkai and did the first thing that came to mind.
She hurriedly broke off the kiss and stared at him while her face reddened. She was horrified. What the hell was he thinking! You don't comfort somebody by kissing them, she thought.
“I-I-I'm so, so sorry,” he stammered. What on earth had possessed him to do that? “I don't know why I even did that. I just,” he sighed, “I just don't like hearing people say things like that. Just forget about the scars, all right? When you do, you'll realize that there are others who will want you, scars and all. So what if you are strong. It just shows that you are a brave warrior who will fight for those who you care for. And even the masculine woman has some femininity to them. Sometimes it takes someone else, or someone outside their familiarity to see that, but it won't mean much until they see it themselves.”
The taiyoukai took in the situation that just occurred, and thought back to a time that was much similar to this. “You are a taijiya. You fight demons and that is what you are best at. Not only that, but it is something you love. I can see it in you eyes when you fight. When you all would try to fight against me, or that time when everyone tried to fight the panther demons. You should not let anything stop you from doing something you love so much when you are so good at it,” he stared at her, taking in the beauty that she could not see herself.
He continued, “I remember a while ago, with Inuyasha's mother, Izayoi; I remember how she was, and the things she would tell us when my father was courting her. You know that she was next in line to be a princess?”
“No, I didn't know that,” Sango began. “Wait, Inuyasha's mother is a royal? And you are too. So isn't Inuyasha royal as well?”
“I do not think that it has occurred to my brother, but yes, from both bonds of blood my brother is a royal as well. But that is not the subject at hand. His mother would tell us that ever since she was a little girl, she always had dreams of being a warrior. But because of her position and since she was human, she was not even allowed to be taught the moves of a warrior. But that is the way some humans feel; that women of royal status should have bodyguards and warriors to defend them. But they don't think about the situation that could arise if something were to happen to all of her defending warriors.”
He continued, “Izayoi however, was taught a few simple, instinct rules of defense, like all women of royalty, but that was about it; and of course, she had always wanted to know more. However, she was a good mother, wife, and person. She knew how to love and care for people; it was something she loved to do, and something she was good at.” Sesshoumaru carefully removed his pelt from the girl's waist since it seemed he had her attention. He didn't want risk loosing her attention to his fluff. “I remember at the end of my father's courtship, she asked him why her. Do you know why?”
“Why?”
“He told her, and I remember this exactly, `I love you Izayoi,' he recalled as he slipped into a sort of dream state. “I love you more than anything else. Your level of fighting is not why I want to mate with you. You make me happy, and you've captured my heart. Besides my last mate and my own mother, I don't think I've met someone with more heart than you. Izayoi, you always want to protect those you love; you care for everyone, and you're not bothered by my being youkai,” he ended as he woke up to reality. “My father loved her so much, and he even tried to teach her a few things. But she gave that up, and poured all her energy into loving him back. If she did miss not getting to be a warrior, she hid it well from us. Loving and caring for others was what she was best at. It was what she loved, and she never stopped.
“Sango, she loved us despite our being youkai. Not all humans do that. You are a taijiya, and that is what you are best at. You could have two or a two hundred scars. Whoever falls in love with you will fall in love with you for you are. Look at my baka brother. He loves your friend Kagome, and I'm sorry he can't let things go with that dead clay pot. She helps him to care for people now, even though he does not like to show it. He used to not have such a heart. The fact that you are strong and good at caring for others is a trait that others will love and admire in you. You've got to accept that in yourself. Do not worry, I think in time you will be fine with the way things are. And your amount of femininity will be a thing of the past, because you will be happy with the way you are.” He smiled at her. He draped his long fluffy pelt over her shoulders like a shawl for reassurance.
“I thought you are a youkai,” she questioned as she blushed and smiled back at him.
“I am. Why would you say such a thing?” he angered.
She giggled. “Because, a youkai such as yourself would never care enough to say such things to try to make me feel better.”
He stared at her.
“Okay, I'm sorry. Most youkai wouldn't be bothered with trying to make someone happy who wasn't human.”
“Well, most humans would not trust a youkai.”
“True,” she agreed. “Don't you think we should head back?” she asked as she stared at the midnight blue sky. Seeing the stars made her heart feel light and feathery. For once, she could enjoy it, knowing that she would be sleeping under the stars with a new friend looking out for her.
“For once, I agree with you, human,” he said, chuckling at the death stare he received from her. He withdrew his pelt off of her shoulder as he stood up. Extending the hand that he did have, he helped her to feet.
“Thanks, even though I could have gotten up by myself. So, are you going to tell me why you hate humans?”
“Another time, perhaps. We have told enough today. Let's save some for another day. Besides, are you going to tell why you feel so indifferent towards the monk?” She gasped as he continued, “I haven't forgotten about that.” But he decided to let that go for now.
“So,” he said as they followed the riverside back to the campsite, “You and Rin are the only ones who know of how I can be. I would like to keep it that way. It would be a shame to have to hurt my new friend if she told others of my friendliness,” replied the youkai, half threatening.
“Oh,” she replied wide-eyed. “I still don't understand why you can't be friends with your brother.”
He kept quiet as they continued on their way. He couldn't believe that she would want to ruin the mood by asking that question. He watched the moon lighten up the darkened sky as he thought of how things were going.
***Little did the two know that someone was hanging on to their every word. Secretly, she was able to keep her aura hid not only from the taijiya, but the powerful taiyoukai. Smiling at the thought that neither of the two knew she was there.
