The teen took a breath.

'I wish I could control my powers.'

Sixteen flames died.

Everyone clapped.

"Now it's time for some cake!"

The group clustered around as Grandfather began cutting the sugary confection.

"Happy birthday dear,” Mother said, “I'm so proud of you."

"Thanks mom," Kagome smiled.

Someone tapped the girl's shoulder.

"Hello, Hojo."

The shy boy blushed and handed her a present, "Happy birthday."

Kagome tore off the shiny paper.

"Um," the box held a withered...something.

Hojo beamed, "It's for that nasty gangrene you have."

The priestess plastered a big smile on her face, “Thank you."

"Welcome," he scuffed his foot against the ground.

Kagome waited, she knew what he was going to ask.

"Would you like to see a movie on Friday?" Hojo stammered.

“Sorry, but I have an appointment." Kagome grimaced.

'About 500 years in the past.'

He nodded, "well, maybe next time."

The priestess watched Hojo join the crowd around the cake.

`Searching for that special someone,' she sighed, `and the other person is totally oblivious.'

Kagome glanced at the God tree. Golden eyes watched from the leafy branches.

'Just like me.'

At last, all the guests departed from the shrine.

"Inuyasha?" Kagome's mother called.

The hanyo leapt from his perch.

"Are you going to come in? I have plenty of leftovers if you're hungry."

Inuyasha shook his head, "Kagome's sleeping?”

The woman nodded.

He sighed, “I'll be waiting at the old hag's place.”

Mrs. Higurashi smiled, “thank you.”

'Happy birthday, Kagome'
