Chapter 9

A.N. Is it weird that when I type Kikyo in Microsoft Word, that it tries to correct Kikyo to
Kinky? And when I type in ToraShines it tries to correct it to Trashiness.... It tries to
correct Shippou to Hippo or to Shampoo. Very odd.

- - Kagome's POV - -

I woke up when the warmth I was laying against moved away. I was cold. So I moved
towards the source of the warmth and opened my eyes. I shut them quickly, startled by the bright
light coming into the room. "Sesshomaru?"

"I'm here, love."

I sighed in relief. I was half convinced that he had left instead of staying like I asked him
to. I should've known that Sesshomaru would never break his word to me.

"Mate, I need to talk to you."

"Now?"

"Not immediately, but soon."

"Okay. Wait till I'm awake, please."

"Of course."

I stretched and opened one of my eyes carefully. It wasn't as bright. This might've had
something to do with my mate blocking the light so it didn't shine directly into my eyes. He's so

sweet. I never knew how sweet he could be. I used to think he was cold and superior. But he isn't.
Not at all. I opened my other eye and yawned.

"Okay, I'm awake."

He took a deep breath. "Mate, do you know how some creatures have a yearly mating
season? Whitetail deer's mating season is the beginning of November."

I sat up when he began talking. "Yes. I know."

"Well, female youkai have a mating season. It's different for every race of youkai.
Female dragons adopt their mate's race's mating season. The inu youkai mating season is
coming up soon."

"Oh. Okay. And what does that mean, exactly, for me?"

He relaxed when I seemed calmer than I guess he expected me to be. "It means that next
moon, I will take you to a space I had prepared years ago for my mate's mating season. If
another male catches your scent, he will be able to tell you are in heat. He could try to take you
from me. To prevent that danger, I will bring you to the area that I prepared for mating season."

I nodded. "I understand, Sesshomaru. How long will we have to stay there?"

"Until your mating season is over."

"Which will be?" I looked at him quizzically.

"A mating season is generally a week or two long. During your mating season, you are
able to become pregnant. At other times of the year, you cannot become pregnant. During your
mating season, you actually have an increased chance of becoming with child."

That was a shock. I'm not sure I'm ready for a child of my own. Except for Shippou, of
course, but he was well past toddler stage when I adopted him as my son. "Sesshomaru?"

"I know. You don't feel ready for a pup."

"This is all so knew. I haven't even known you that long. I love you with all my heart,
but are we ready for a child of our own?"

"I don't know, Kagome. I will support you whether you decide you're ready or whether
you decide you aren't. I'll be here either way."

"Sesshomaru..." My eyes had glazed over with tears, and now they spilled out. I leaned
closer to him and pressed my face into his chest. When I pulled back, he was looking at me with
the intensity of someone who loves another. He really cares a lot about me. "Could I . . . talk to
my mom about this? I know we just got back, but I don't think I can decide on this without my
mom's help, even though you will support me through my decision." He nodded and I leaned
closer, stretching my neck up so my lips hovered over his.

He closed the distance and kissed me carefully but passionately. "We will go to see your
mother the day after tomorrow." I nodded, accepting this. He cradled me in his arms and laid us
down softly onto his bed. We kissed again, and again, and again. His lips were soft against mine.
Our hair blended together, my rosy brown and his silver white. We laid together for a time, just
enjoying each other, until Sesshomaru rose.

"I will go read about the ceremony that we should have for Shippou. Then I can go talk to
him about it. Alright?"

"Yes. Just be nice about it, and let him know you care. Sometimes you hide your feelings.
Shippou needs to know how you feel about this. Now, I'm going to go to the hot springs with
Sango. Let me know if you need me."

He chuckled at this. "I think it more likely you will need me. I will send Sorabai to show
you to Sango's room and to the hot springs." He kissed me softly but thoroughly and then lightly
kissed the tip of my nose. He walked out of the room and after a minute Sorabai came in.

"Lady Kagome, I will send for the lady Sango." She unfolded the robe she had laying
over her arm and helped me put it on over my night robe. It was beautiful, marked with
Sesshomaru's personal crest on deep blue silk. "If you will follow me, we will meet the lady
Sango at the hot springs."

I nodded and followed her out of the room and down the long hallway, around several
corners, and in through another door. I removed the robe and my night robe. We went through
another door that led out into a room with multiple pools, each giving off steam. The room was
painted a relaxing blue, and the floor was made of a warm gray stone. I settled into one of the
pools and Sorabai left the area. Sango came in a minute later and slid in the water next to me.

"Just like old times, right?"

"Yeah, so relaxing. And now we know that Miroku isn't spying on us." Sango blushed a
deep shade of red when I mentioned the monk.

"So how are things going with Sesshomaru?"

"I love him so much, but everything is happening so quickly. And I just found out who I
really am."

"Does he care about you as much as you do him? And what about Shippou?"

"He cares a great deal about me. I know he loves me, however cold he may act at times.
And he says that since I am Shippou's mother, he is Shippou's father. Did you know that we
have to go through some ceremony to officially adopt Shippou?"

"Yes, I did." We continued talking until our toes looked like prunes. Then we got out of
the pools and dried off with soft towels that were left on a bench in the bathing room. Sorabai
entered and led us out another door in the room we had entered through. We were showed into a
room that held two couches, a mirror, and a great deal of clothes.

Sango picked out a deep blue kimono decorated with pink and white lotus blossoms. It
looked beautiful on her. Sorabai and Sango helped me pick out a Chinese Hanfu dress. It was a
delicate rose color, embroidered in equally delicate gold and silver flowers growing up from the
bottom of the dress. It was accented by a deeper rose fabric on the edges of the long sleeves and
on the bust of the dress. It fit as if tailored perfectly to me. Sorabai led us to another room, where
our hair was styled to accent the dresses. Sango's hair was held into a bun by a crown of pink
and white crafted lotus blossoms.

My hair was piled into a bun. A thin silver circlet held the bun in place. Small and
delicate gold beading hung down on the middle of my forehead. My lips were painted red and
Sorabai helped place a thin braided gold and silver choker around my neck. I almost didn't
recognize myself when I looked into the mirror.

"You look beautiful, Kagome."

"I agree with the lady Sango. You do look very beautiful, Lady Kagome."

"Can I be there when Sesshomaru sees you, Kagome? He'll be startled."

I nodded, still looking at my reflection. "Okay, Sango. Do you think we should go find
Shippou now? Sesshomaru was going to talk to him about the adoption ceremony and I want to
know how Shippou feels about it."

"Of course. Lead the way, Sorabai!" So Sorabai led us to Shippou.

It turns out that Shippou was outside in the gardens sitting next to Sesshomaru. Both of
them had their backs to me. They weren't talking much, which wasn't surprising on
Sesshomaru's part. I headed towards them. "Hello!"

I didn't surprise Sesshomaru, but Shippou jumped up immediately. "Wow, Kagome. You
look really pretty!" At this, Sesshomaru did turn around.

I giggled. Shippou made himself scarce. Sesshomaru was very surprised. His mouth
opened and when he closed it, he proceeded to swallow several times. He stood up slowly. He
cleared his throat. "Well, do you like it, Sesshomaru?" He moved towards me and pulled me the
rest of the way, his hands on my hips.

He kept staring. Then, he leaned closer and whispered into my ear. "You look beautiful,
mate. Simply awe-inspiring. I think I've fallen in love again, Kagome." I leaned back and
pressed my lips against his, he deepened the kiss, bending me backwards in a poetic dip. I heard
clapping and wolf whistling. A group of servants stood with Sango, Sorabai, Shippou, and now
Miroku. I blushed, but then Sesshomaru's next kiss made me forget everything but him and the
taste of him on my lips. When he drew back this time, I could only gaze into his eyes.

"Did you come to the gardens just to awe me?"

"Hmmm?" It took me actually understand the words. "Oh! No, not just for you. Have you
talked to Shippou?" When he nodded, I continued to question him. "What did he say?"

"He agreed, and said that since he was already our son, we might as well make it
official."

"Mmmm... Right. Okay. That's good." His eyes were very distracting. I found it hard to
carry on any thought process when my thoughts kept returning to the burning passion enclosed in
those golden eyes.

"Did you want to talk to him?"

"Oh! Oh, yes. I did."

"Would you like me to fetch him for you?" His eyes started smiling at the edges. I
amused him. He knew how much I distracted him. Well, two can play that game.

My arm slid around him, going lower a bit lower than it should have. He raised his
eyebrow at me. I squeezed. He growled and leaned closer, kissing me more passionately than
before. I hooked my leg around his. He nibbled on my lip. Miroku wolf whistled. I pulled away
and looked towards the group of people watching us.

"They can go away, if you want them too."

"No, I should talk to Shippou." I pulled out of his grip. "I love you, Sesshomaru."

"As do I, my stunning mate."

"We can pick this up where we left off. Later." He nodded. One quick kiss later, I turned
and walked towards Shippou. His eyes followed me. I drew Shippou away from the group
towards an area where we could talk together.

"So, Shippou, what do you think about us adopting you formally?"

"I think that would be great! Hey, Mom, what were you doing with Sesshomaru?"

"Nothing you won't learn eventually, Shippou," I stammered out.
