Down to the earth I fell,

With dripping wings

Heavy things won't fly

*******************

Kagome's body hit the solid earth with a hard thud. She looked up and saw the demon glaring down at her. She had realized too late that she was not alone in the forest. She pulled an arrow, but she was dragged from the ground before she even had a chance to panic. The red eyes of the brutal demon drilled into her very soul. She didn't know why he didn't just kill her now and be done with it. She felt herself becoming light headed and knew she was losing quite a lot of blood. She attempted to speak, to reason with the familiar face. She could still feel her small hand gripping the arrow she knew she never could have used anyway.

And the sky might catch on fire

And burn the axis of the world that's why

I prefer a sunless sky

To the glittering and stinging in my eyes

Soon she felt tears stinging her eyes. She had grown to care for him, even love him…and now he had betrayed her. She looked up into the once beautiful golden eyes, now tainted in red. "Why…" She breathed silently as she felt herself slipping into oblivion. He said nothing, only continued to stare at her hungrily; tantalized by the smell of her blood. She took one last fleeting glance at the face of the demon. He was in fact more than just a demon. He was a monster, a killer…her friend. Just as her mind slipped away she heard another voice. One that she also recognized as a friend, though that had not always been the case. She knew there would be a fight now. She tried to turn her head but couldn't move. She closed her eyes and waited for death to claim her.

Gleaming in the dark sea

I'm as light as air floating there breathlessly

*******************

Kagome felt herself sinking into a nothingness, all sounds and coherent thoughts evaporated and she descended into a dark oblivion. Her mind and body swirled pleasantly and she felt an intense amount of power rush through her.

When the dream dissolves

I open up my eyes

I realize that

Everything is shore less sea

Weightlessness is passing over me

Suddenly she found herself in a powerful embrace. She opened her eyes and was in awe at the beauty she found herself beholding. The golden eyes that were searching her face had a magnetism that held no comparison. The hair that fell softly over his shoulders and onto her was silky and so white that even the purest of winter snow looked drab. He spoke her name softly and then pulled her to him. She knew instantly that he had been forced to kill InuYasha and was trying to comfort her.

I feel so light

This is all I wanna feel tonight

I feel so alive

Tonight and the rest of my life

It had been months now since Sesshoumaru had began consorting with them. Rin had been in danger and they had helped him save her. Though he had never taken a liking to his half brother, Sesshoumaru had grown somewhat fond of the young priestess who had so kindly mothered the frightened human child after her safe return. He had never dropped his icy demeanor, for he was too proud. But there had been many occasions when Kagome had seen that he, despite himself, did have a heart.

When he had heard of his brother's choice to use the Shikon Jewel to become a full demon, he immediately knew that InuYasha would not be able to contain himself. He held no control over his demon blood and lost his sanity to the dominant lust for blood that was in him.

Sesshoumaru had heard the screams from the priestess and found his brother standing over her. The scent of her blood was everywhere and Sesshoumaru called to his brother, diverting his attention from the dying human. It took him only moments to finally end the life of his now demon half-brother. He knew the priestess would be devastated but he had not ended the life of the InuYasha she had grown to care for. He had killed a mindless animal that would have spent the rest of his life searching for blood and death.

He stepped towards her, noting that she was no longer amongst the living. Without giving thought to reason he pulled his Tenseiga and gave a mighty swing, effectively bringing the gentle human back from her death. He then did something that surprised even him. He knelt and took her into his arms.

Kagome's mind began to clear and she realized that she was being held tightly to Sesshoumaru's chest. She attempted to look past him, knowing what she would see. He pulled her tighter and simply said, "Don't."

She began to cry heavily; the reality that her best friend had just killed her and was now dead not more than ten feet from her was setting in. She clung to the demon lord and finally looked up at him. "You can bring him back…" He saw the hopeful look in her eyes and pulled her back tightly to him.

"No, he would only revive as he was; a mindless demon. InuYasha, for all practical purposes died the day he made his wish." Kagome continued to sob until sleep mercifully accepted her into its comforting arms.

Everything is waves and stars

The universe is resting in my arms

It had been nearly two months since InuYasha's death. Kagome stood near the God tree, where InuYasha had been bound for fifty years. She knelt on the soft earth where he was buried and would rest for eternity. She felt the tears coming to her eyes as she said a prayer and left the flowers she had brought. She walked softly through the forest listening to the sweet chirping of the birds, taking in the pleasant scents around her. She stopped suddenly when she saw him there watching her.

Sesshoumaru had always known that InuYasha would die at his hands. It had always been one of his greatest desires and it was a thought that he always taken great pleasure in. However, seeing his brother standing there over the priestess had frightened him. There was no pleasure in that moment. Killing his brother seemed more of an act of pity, than a great accomplishment.

In the moments after the priestess woke and realized what had happened, the great demon lord felt emotions that he had never before felt. Regret, remorse and sorrow all swam through his very soul. He had held her very world in his hands and was forced to crush it.

Now gazing at the young priestess, Sesshoumaru relived those feelings. Fulfilling his lifelong desire not only left him feeling strangely empty but it had devastated the one human besides Rin that he had grown to care for. He had left her at her village and not returned, until today.

So many times Kagome had looked upon Sesshoumaru in fear. Now she looked upon him in awe. The vision of his beauty as he resurrected her was forever burned into the very depths of her soul. It was true that InuYasha had died by his hand but it had been to protect her and in some strange way himself, for InuYasha would not have wanted to live such a life.

Sesshoumaru stood motionless. The smell of the freshly blossoming flowers filled the air while the sunlight shone through the trees, making the earth come to life in a vivid dance of shadows and silhouettes. In front of him Kagome stood staring at him. Her raven black hair contrasted beautifully against the powder blue kimono she was wearing.

Suddenly she ran towards him and tossed herself into him. He slowly brought his arms around her and acknowledged that she was now his responsibility. InuYasha was no longer there to protect her. He gazed down at her and inhaled her scent. It felt right to hold this human. He pulled her tighter to him and realized that this was all he wanted to feel right now.
