Lessons

The things you can't forgive are just the things you can't forget
Smoke rose from the ashes of my burning cigarette
I tapped it with my finger, watched it flicker, watched it burn
And I bit back a smile; there were things I had to learn.

The act itself was hollow; I could feel no pride nor joy
I was broken, I was beaten, there was nothing to destroy
In my unholy presence, all the walls had been stripped clean

So I lost myself to liquor, which I found was quite obscene
Then began a trend in which I turned to nicotine

When you looked at me and smiled, I believed you were worthwhile
But you don't know what you want, so I can't give it to you
Now let the cigarette die, and take a step forward.
