Win Her Back
Oh boy! Where to begin with this one? He came to my office four
years ago. This man, shall I call him Jeremy or Ricky? Let's go
with Ricky.
Anyway, Ricky sat in front of my desk.
“I love her so much!” he said. I looked up.
“Your ex?”
“Yeah.” He lifted his chin. He pressed his lips together.
“What's her name?”
“Maggie. I've been on her couch for weeks.”
“Why is that?”
“It's kind of embarrassing.”
“Try me.”
Ricky took a breath. “I lost my apartment last month. I didn't have
anywhere else to go. Most of my friends were married with children.
I am between jobs. I mean, I could get one easily. Keeping one was
the hard part.”
“Why is that?”
Ricky nervously laughed. “Many things. Sometimes my fault, other
times not.”
“Are you employed now?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Am I allowed to say?”
“If you want to.”
He looked around for a moment. “It's the night shift at the
[Redacted] biolab. I'm a janitor there.”
“How did you end up at your ex's house?”
Ricky nervously laughed. “It's a funny story, really. I was just
evicted from my apartment. I had just gotten my new job too. I
didn't have anywhere to go.”
“What about your family?”
Ricky pressed his lips together. “We don't exactly get along.” He
let out an uncomfortable chuckle. (Yes, he laughed a lot. I didn't
ask why.)
“And how did you decide to turn to your ex?”
“It just happened, really. I remembered her number for some reason.
So I called her up.”
“And what did she say?”
“She wondered why I was calling her. I told her everything.”
“And she let you stay at her place?”
“Yes. I thought it was crazy too. Maybe we could get back
together?” He sounded so hopeful.
“But?”
Ricky frowned. “She had a new man.”
“And you slept on her couch?”
“Yeah. I didn't have anywhere to go.”
“Did you tell her how you felt?”
“Hell no!” Ricky buried his head in his hands. “It would make
things awkward!” He put his hands on his lap.
“I should face the truth, shouldn't I?”
“I don't know. What do you think?”
Ricky shrugged. “I don't know.”
“And you still love Maggie?”
“Yes!”
“Have you tried to look for a new place to live?”
Ricky shook his head.
“And why is that?” I asked. He dropped his head in his hands. Ricky
groaned as loud as he could. I sighed.
“And you are still sleeping on her couch?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay then…” I finished my notes.
I don't know if Ricky was still on Maggie's couch.
