Sing the Blues

There's always the push to go further. The drive to keep going. Never give up. Keep on until everything is used up. Always that push. Always that damned push.

Her name was Nina “Jade” Indigo. Rising star in the blues scene. Very beautiful woman. Voice could make Heaven weep with joy. She had a show that night. This would make her a big star.

Jade disappeared after the show.

Vince shook his head. Jade's managed panicked.

“Tell me again what happened,” Vince said. The manager looked like she would faint.

“I don't know! Everything was fine. We had a great show.”

“How was she? What was her mood like?”

“Fine.”

“She wasn't worried about anything?”

“No. Not to my knowledge.” But then the manager paused. “Well… there was something.”

“What?”

The manager hesitated at first. “There was this.” She pulled out a strange note. “She got this last night.” Vince took the note and read it. On the surface, it looked like an ordinary love letter.

“Who sent this?” the PI asked. The manager shook her head.

“It didn't say.”

“No address?”

“No.”

“I see.” He looked up from the letter. “Where's Jade's dressing room?”

“Down the hall to the right.”

“Thank you.” Vince walked down the hall. The manager stayed behind nervous.

The dressing room looked so clean. The smell of roses hit Vince's nose. It felt like stepping back into vintage Hollywood. Vince carefully walked inside. Nothing looked out of place. No sign of a struggle. Maybe the possible abduction didn't happen here. Still, Vince had a job to do. He took a look around.

Nothing of note caught his attention. He pieced together what could've happened. Jade came her after the show. She was probably taking off her makeup or whatever. Maybe there was a knock on the door. She turned. Maybe they talked and she left.

Maybe…

Vince turned to the security guard behind him. “Any security footage in the club?”

“Yep,” the bigger man said. Good, they were getting somewhere.

“Lead the way,” Vince said. He followed the security guard down the hall.

Nina stared at her phone. She had been debating this for quite some time. She and Vince had been getting close. Maybe too close. Was that a bad thing? Nina wasn't sure.

Her hand trembled. She needed to say something. She had to. Tess was the one who noticed.

“Peach,” she said. Nina rolled her eyes.

“Don't,” she said.

“What?” Tess asked.

“Don't! Just… Don't!”

“Okay, okay. Geez.”

“Thank you.” Nina huffed.

Tess smiled. “But seriously, Peach…”

“Shut up!” Nina's face reddened. Her friend smiled and pulled her in.

Tess had a point. She didn't have to say it. Denial was pointless by now. Tess did give her some useful advice.

“Be honest with him and yourself. Secrets hold power,” she said. Nina gave her a strange look.

“What are you saying?” she asked. Tess leaned forward.

“Just take the plunge,” she said. “Get it our of your system. If he says yes, fine. If he says no, that's fine too.”

Nina stared at her phone with Vince's number on the screen. This was it. She had to act now or never.

Nina made the call.

“Hello?” Vince asked on the other line. Nina took a breath.

“Vince… I have something to tell you,” she said. There was a pause on the other line.

“Is something wrong?” he asked. She lifted her chin.

“I think I might having for you!” she blurted out. There is was. Nina put it out in the open. She waited to see what was going to happen next. Nina's stomach turned.
