It was a clear, warm day. The sea was calm and the only sounds were coming from the wingulls searching for lunch and the small chatter on the deck….

“BEN YOU ATE MY CANDY?!” shouted John

“Yeah, err sorry about that” said an unconcerned Ben

“I thought we were mates?!” asked John

“We are” said Ben who began playing with his pokeball

“Well why did you eat all our candy?” cried John

“Look I do have some candy left”

“You do?” asked John sounding thrilled

Ben lifted up the seat to one of the chairs and yanked out the candy bag, John made a grab for it-

“I don't think so,” said Ben jerking the candy behind his back “You can have this candy all to yourself if you beat me in a pokemon battle”

“Fine it's a deal” John said, shaking his friend's hand

 

Meanwhile in the kitchen Mark, Danielle and Kevin were finding places for the food and preparing lunch.

“Kevin for goodness sake!” moaned Danielle

Kevin was busy emptying the cupboards where Danielle had placed the food.

“Look,” Kevin said as clumsily dropped a bag of apples on the floor “there is nothing wrong with organisation”

“Kevin-”

“Look, if we place the oven foods in the cupboard near the oven then-”

“Fine whatever” said Danielle, who did not like to be wrong

“If you two are finished can you go outside and ask if people want tuna, cheese or cucumber on their sandwiches” said Mark politely as he started buttering bread.

“OK. Kevin I think you've got something on your glasses” said Danielle

“Oh my, let me see...”

Kevin removed his glasses and raised them upwards towards the steps for light. Danielle quickly turned around and switched a packet of spaghetti with a tin of soup.

“Well I can't see anything,” Kevin said as he put his glasses back on and turned to face Danielle

“Oh it must have been a finger mark or something” sniggered Danielle

“OK, these mistakes happen” said Kevin as he climbed up the steps to the deck

Mark laughed quietly and exchanged glances with a giggling Danielle.

 

Back on deck…

“You must be kidding you can't battle just for candy” chuckled Violet

“We can and we are, there's nothing to do on this boat” explained Ben

“We've only been on it for an hour, besides I'm sure if you're bored Nick can find you a job”

“Oh,” said Nick at the sound of his name “actually there isn't much to do now but there will be later”

“Well I don't approve” said Violet sternly

“Good because you referee and you need to be unbiased” said John

“Fine then if it will shut you up!” barked Violet

 

Most of the team gathered around to watch the event excluding Mark in the kitchen, Nick at the helm and Harry on the roof sunbathing.

“This is a one on one battle between John and Ben,” said Violet “Ready, Go!”

“I choose Electrike!” shouted John, throwing his pokeball on the ground to reveal his electric pokemon

“And I choose Pineco!” Ben threw his pokeball

“Electrike use-”

“Sorry to interrupt” said Kevin politely

 

“Not at all were not exactly busy!” yelled Ben sarcastically

Kevin looked around silently at what was happening for several moments…

“Kevin!” shouted Violet

“OK, we need to know who wants what sandwiches, now we have three kinds which I will happily go through thoroughly so you can see the benefits and detriments of the produce,” said Kevin

“Ok, let's go Braniac” said Danielle as she pulled Kevin away by his ear

“But I didn't get to-”

“We'll just have a load of all types!” shouted Danielle as they walked off

 

“Anyway,” said a wound-up Violet “Let's start again… go!”

“Electrike use thundershock!” called John

“Pineco harden!” shouted Ben

The electric ray from Electrike vanished as it hit Pineco leaving no damage.

“Pineco tackle!”

Pineco leaped forward

“Electrike agility!”

Electrike dodged the attack and Pineco landed in its place

“Electrike use thunder wave!”

Electrike glowed electricity then fired a wave of it at Pineco who stumbled and shook itself

“Pineco use pin missile!”

Pineco just shook and let off electricity

“Electrike use take down!”

“'Pineco Harden, harden, harden now!”

Electrike slammed into Pineco but Pineco only moved slightly

“Ha you can't paralyze Pineco for long!” said Ben

John growled

“Pineco use rapid spin!”

Pineco jumped slightly off the ground and spun around swiftly, knocking away Electrike.

“Pineco use Spikes!”

Pineco fired a dozen spikes around Electrike, trapping it.

“Get out of that!” called Ben

“OK then, Electrike use agility!” yelled John

Electrike ran very fast in a circle blowing away the spikes

“Electrike use pin missile!”

“Pineco rapid spin!”

Electrike's spikes bounced off Pineco

“OK Pineco use solarbeam!”

Pineco glowed and absorbed petite light energy balls from the sky.

“Electrike use… err, let me think”

“Eleck?” asked Electrike

“How about-”

BLAST!

 

A powerful beam shot out of Pineco's energy gather above its head at Electrike, who was now soaring through the air off the boat

“Uh-oh!” said Ben

“Electrike!” shouted John as he watched his Electrike plummet towards the ocean

“Swellow grab Electrike!” shouted Harry's voice from the roof

A beautiful Swellow took off at immense speed from Harry's side straight towards Electrike, catching it just before it touched the water's surface.

“Thanks Swellow,” John said to the pokemon as it dropped his weak Electrike into his arms “Thanks Harry”

“Don't mention it dude” Harry said coolly as he and Swellow lay back down on the roof.

“Well I guess Ben is the winner,” said Violet pointing at her brother who looked worried “I'll go and get a potion”, she ran down the steps. Ben and Pineco approached John and Electrike

“John I'm so sorry I don't want him to get really hurt like that”

“Don't be so stupid mate, it was a great battle; we got lots of experience right?” John asked Electrike

“Eleck Eleck-trike!” cheered Electrike

“Here John you have the candy,” Ben passed the bag of candy to his friend “I did eat a lot of it so it's only fair”

“Thanks!” John patted Ben on the back just as Violet appeared and sprayed some healing spray on the injured pokemon

“There you go Electrike” said Violet patting him on the head

“Thank you, OK now have a rest buddy” said John, returning Electrike

 

Meanwhile David and Helen had gone to the rear of the ship after watching the battle. They were sat on a bench watching the trail the boat left behind in the water and a group of nearby Wingulls that were circling a flapping Magikarp.

“Are you sure that this was a good idea?” Helen asked her husband

“We need the money for your operation and we said we would go on another adventure” replied David

“Yes, Haha do you remember our adventures?” laughed Helen

“Yes we had good times. I'll tell you what, when we've finished this trip and you've had your operation we can go and meet all our friends we met over the years” said David

“That sounds lovely” replied his wife

“And we can take it slowly, no more running after trainers trying to get their-”

“Sorry to interrupt but we're having our lunch now” said Holly politely

“OK, thanks” said the couple as they followed Holly to the front deck

 

The front deck had a table set up in the centre with 15 chairs surrounding it and 15 sets of knifes, forks, spoons, plates, bowls and glasses. There was a lot of food on the table including Tuna, cheese and cucumber sandwiches, assorted biscuits, varied crackers next to a plate of posh and weird-looking cheeses, a bowl of several different fruits, a tub of coleslaw, a tub of yoghurt, a bowl of mixed-flavoured chips and a big jug of orange juice.

 

“Wow Mark you did all this?” asked Amy

“Yeah” said Mark shyly

“Yeah he has real talent” said Danielle who exchanged a strange look with Mark who smirked, everyone started to sit.

“Yeah well he learned it all from me” exclaimed Earl who took a seat next to Holly

“Yeah right the only I learned from you was to never drink a whole bottle of soda before you go to bed” laughed Mark along with Holly; who received a glare from her uncle Earl

“Hey that was wet patch on my bed was from the flat above who's bath had overflowed and sank through the ceiling, and even if it was true I was only 9!” explained Earl

Holly Snorted “yeah times it by two!”

Several people giggled

“I did not!-”

“Danielle,” interrupted Nick before an argument started “is the pokemon's lunch ready?”

“Oh yes sorry I forgot there under the table in the cool” said Danielle who motioned for people to pull a bowl out from under their feet.

“The pokemon breeders and nutritionists worked together to created a food that should be well suited for each different pokemon” she said as people placed the bowls on the floor behind them.

“Go Vaporeon” said Nick

“Sealeo come out” exclaimed Amy

“Let's go Swellow” called Harry

“Lunch time Kadabra!” exclaimed Daphne

“Come and get it Sableye” called Gary

“Try this Magmar” said Kevin

“Din-Dins Cubone!” called Holly

“Go Tyranitar” said Mark

“Come out Hariyama!” exclaimed Earl

“Ivysaur lunchtime” called Danielle

“Nidorina go!” called Violet

“New food Pineco!” exclaimed Ben

“Go Kecleon” said David

“Lunchtime Ditto” said Helen

“I think I'll give Electrike his later, he's napping now” explained John

 

The team all surveyed each others pokemon and watched how they reacted with each other. Tyranitar and Hariyama began eating together and murmuring, Cubone jumped on Holly's knee and hugged her, Vaporeon and Sealeo remembered they had met before and began mumbling and Magmar was surveying the food.

“How is it Sableye?” asked Gary

Sableye beamed and munched loudly

“Good then I suppose” said Gary

“What about you dude?” Harry asked his pokemon

“Swell- Swellow!” said Swellow with a big smile

“Well you must give us the ingredients” Amy said as she watched her Sealeo's face disappear in the bowl

“Of course” Danielle said

 

A while after the meal the team stopped the boat next to a very tiny island only big enough for them all to sit on. Some pokemon went back in their balls and others went on the island but Kevin stayed on the boat with his fire pokemon playing chess. Everyone changed into a bathing suit then Nick, Vaporeon, Sealeo, Gary, Mark, Earl, Hariyama, Danielle, Ivysaur, Violet, Nidorina, Ben, Pineco and John played volleyball in the shallow water around the island, Amy, Daphne and Helen were watching them play and reading magazines, David, Kecleon, Ditto, Cubone, Holly, Harry and Swellow were playing in the sand.

“Get it Ivysaur!” called Danielle

“Ivy!” called Ivysaur as it hit the ball with its vines.

“Knock it back Vaporeon!” called Nick

“Pore!” called Vaporeon as it jumped up and whacked the ball with its tail, slamming it into the water.

“Yay nice move Vaporeon!” exclaimed John as Nick patted his pokemon.

 

“What do you think of this one?” Daphne asked Amy, pointing to a picture of a purple dress in her magazine. Amy was busy looking at a topless Nick.

“Amy I said do you like this dress?”

“…….Oh what? Sorry I didn't hear you” said Amy glancing at Daphne then back at Nick again

“Oh please Amy it's so obvious you like him!”

“Like who? I don't know who you're talking about” Amy said as she pulled Daphne's magazine towards her.

“Amy I'm not stup-aargh!” yelled Daphne as a wet volley ball smacked her in the face

Everyone started laughing.

“Oops sorry Daph!” chortled Gary sarcastically

“You! That's it!” yelled Daphne as she jumped up and ran towards Gary who ran away and they started a water fight.

“Amy dear, I know how you're feeling,” said Helen. Amy frowned and was about to come out to deny her thoughts “I looked at David the same when we were young. Your head is telling you no but your heart is saying yes!” she continued

Amy looked at Helen and then at Nick. “I guess it's like that”

“Yes, I can tell you both have a connection” said Helen kindly

“Well when we young we were at school together and we loved each other as we got older but we never said it until we split up as I went to train as a pokemon coordinator and he went to train as a gym leader, when we met up again years later by accident, he had a girlfriend and I had a boyfriend. When we were going our separate ways again we were about to confess it to each other when we got called away by our partners. We only met up again a week ago and we've been fine, just not talked about…everything”

“Well that's very romantic, I'm sure you'll talk soon and I do hope you'll get together” said Helen as she patted Amy gently on the shoulder and went away to see her husband.

“Yes me too” Amy said to herself as she pretended to read a magazine again

 

“Get back here!” screamed Daphne “I'll teach you, you did it on purpose!”

“You should have seen your face!” cried Gary

“Gary I've known you a long time and you have never matured” Daphne declared

“Well sorry miss stressy, why don't you- what the?”

Suddenly the deep water nearby began swirling and forming a violent whirlpool

“Everyone get out the water now!” shouted Nick as all the team began to panic

Ben grabbed Pineco and Violet grabbed Ben as they all ran to the island where the others were watching the water.

“What's going on?” shouted Kevin who was on the other side of the island

“There's something coming out of a whirlpool” yelled Danielle

Slowly a big, blue head with a fin on top rose out of the whirlpool followed by two scary eyes, a giant mouth-

“It's a Gyarados!” screamed Holly

The Gyarados slowly rose up from the whirlpool and was very clearly visible, being 21'4” and 518 LBS.

The enormous pokemon roared at the top of its voice and looked down at the people.

“What do we do?” asked a nervous John

“We must attack it!” said Earl

“Yeah man!” exclaimed Harry

 

“Hariyama use body slam!” called Earl

“Swellow use Arial Ace!” called Harry

Hariyama jumped in the air above Gyarados and Swellow circled in the air and shot towards Gyarados. Gyarados let out a powerful Hydro pump which blasted the two pokemon away, then it shook its tail and started bellowing loudly.

“Swellow!” yelled Harry as he ran after his pokemon

“Hariyama!” exclaimed Earl as he followed Harry

“That's it Ivysaur lets do this!” called Danielle

“Yeah get ready Nidorina!” exclaimed Violet

“No!” shouted Nick

“What? Its going to attack us!” cried Holly

“Ssshh Nick knows about water pokemon; listen to him” said Amy

Nick opened John's backpack and pulled out a bag of sandwiches he had saved from lunch

“Nick this is hardly the time to be serving a snack!” said John stupidly. Danielle whacked him on the head to tell him to shut up.

Nick walked gently over to Gyarados followed by Vaporeon, Gyarados surveyed them both strangely.

“Are you hungry Gyarados?” asked Nick

Gyarados lowered its head down to Nick and sniffed the sandwiches, then opened its mouth and gobbled them up (after a small scream from Amy).

“Nice right?” asked Nick

Gyarados nodded and grinned then stared at the volleyball. Nick picked it up.

“Did you want to play with us?” asked Nick kindly

Gyarados smiled and flapped its tail

“Here!” said nick as he threw the ball to Gyarados who passed it to Vaporeon who passed it to Nick and so on.

“See,” said nick as he passed the ball “He only came up because he wanted to join, he's not trying to hurt us”

“Why did he attack our pokemon then?” shouted Earl as he was walking from the other side of the island with his arm around Hariyama and Harry who was carrying Swellow

“He only attacked you because you attack him first” explained David

“Oh right, sorry man” said Harry

“Yeah sorry Gyarados” said Earl

 

Later on after everyone had become friends with Gyarados and they had all joined in on a game of dodge ball, Kevin said they should leave now so they weren't too far off schedule. Everyone said bye to Gyarados and went on the boat except Nick, Vaporeon and Amy who were with Gyarados who was unhappy with their departure.

“It's been fun Gyarados but we need to go, we've got a mission” said Nick as he patted Gyarados

“We might see you again on the way back Gyarados” said Amy comfortingly

Gyarados moaned and leaned against Nick

“Do you want to come with me?” asked Nick

Gyarados beamed and flapped around happily

“OK OK!” laughed Nick

“Pore-Pore!” said Vaporeon happily

“That's great but I thought we were only allowed one pokemon?” asked Amy

“That was only to start with, He wanted it to be…like a new journey” said Nick

“Ok great!” cheered Amy

Nick threw the pokeball on top of Gyarados; it bounced off into the air where it absorbed the pokemon in a beam of red light. The ball shook slightly then made a beeping sound indicating Gyarados was captured.

“Alright welcome to the team Gyarados,” said Nick “wait `till you meet my female Gyarados back in Cerulean”
