The team stared at Marcus pondering his final choice. They watched as his hand reached for a pokeball on his belt, he hesitated for a moment looked at the crowd above who were all sat in anticipation then grabbed the pokeball to the side of the other one.

“I have a treat for you all today!” shouted Marcus enthusiastically to the crowd who let out a roar. “I will be using my new pokemon from the Hoenn Region!”

Everyone clapped and cheered and watched Marcus' pokeball anxiously.

“I choose you Zangoose!” He threw his pokeball in the air, it opened with a ray of light and out came a Zangoose who flipped around and performed for the audience; some of them had got out their seats for a closer look.

 

The team looked around at each other asking and thinking who had a normal-type pokemon, David and Helen were whispering to each other and pointing at themselves.

“I take it that you two have normal type pokemon then?” asked Violet unenthusiastically.

“Yes we both have” said David

“Well which one of you is doing this?” asked Gary impatiently

The couple looked at each other.

“I am” said Helen.

“OK good luck!” said Amy supportively

David patted his wife gently on the back as she went into her position while observing Zangoose closely.

 

The women reached to her belt, pulled out her pokeball and whispered something to it. Then she shouted “Go Ditto!” and threw her pokeball onto the field. Ditto emerged gently with an uninterested expression.

“Ready,” called the referee “Begin!”

The field shook again, the water went back into the ground and in its place rose a formation of rocks, with grass, bushes and a small pond.

 

“Ditto transform!” said Helen

Ditto glowed a brilliant white and changed shape until the light faded to reveal a Zangoose.

“Zangoose use quick attack!” called Marcus

Zangoose said its name in response then rapidly ran forward in a charging position towards Ditto.

“Ditto use Agility!”

Ditto (as Zangoose) flashed once then created copies of itself.

Zangoose charged the position where Ditto was but just went through a copy.

“Zangoose use scratch on all of them!”

Zangoose began madly slashing at the dozen Zangooses until it reached the last one-

“Zangoose use thunderbolt!”

“Thunderbolt?” called Kevin

Zangoose yelled its name then fired a bolt of electricity towards Ditto.

“Ditto quickly go behind that rock!”

Just before the thunderbolt hit, Ditto jumped to the side behind a large rock which was merely grazed by the attack.

“Ditto use dig!”

Ditto Zangoose jumped into the air then crashed down head first into the ground in a cloud of dirt.

"Zangoose dodge it!”

Zangoose looked around madly at the ground until-

Smack!

 

Ditto shot out of the ground and crashed into Zangoose, knocking it in the air.

Zangoose crashed on the ground and ditto landed gracefully on top of a rock.

“Now Ditto use skull bash!”

Ditto leaped off the rock with its head shimmering straight towards Zangoose.

“Zangoose use reflect!”

Zangoose (who was still on the ground) had its eyes glimmering yellow then a shield encased it inside.

Whack!

 

Ditto Zangoose thumped its head on the shield and was thrown back onto the rock.

Zangoose's shield vanished and it jumped up breathing heavily, Ditto slid down in front of the rock and panted.

“Zangoose quickly use thunderbolt!”

“Ditto transform!”

Zangoose fired a bolt of lighting, ditto glowed dazzling white and shrunk into its normal form; dodging the attack.

“Wow” said an impressed Mark

“Good thinking” said Nick

 

“Zangoose use mega punch!”

Zangoose darted forward with its right paw shining red; about to hit ditto-

“Ditto move!”

Ditto slipped to the side

Crash!

Zangoose punched the rock, breaking it in half, then it fell forward and plunged into the pond.

After a moment Zangoose floated up from the pond unconscious.

 

“Zangoose is unable to battle, the winner is Helen and her ditto!” said the referee.

The team cheered and the audience clapped as Marcus withdrew his Zangoose.

 

“Yes! Well done ditto thank you!” said Helen as she got to her ditto

“Your welcome” said Ditto

“What? Ditto did you just-“

“Helen Helen Helen!” shouted John and Ben

“Congratulations!” said Holly

“Well done honey” said David who hugged her

“Thanks” said Helen who was looking at her Ditto in bewilderment

“That was an excellent couple of battles,” said Marcus “Your pokemon are all mighty indeed, when you say my father tell him thank you and he can come and see me”

“Of course” said Amy

“Let's go now” said Earl

“Errm… ok Ditto return” said Helen as her and her Ditto lost eye contact by the red beam.

 

As the team walked out the arena and through the hall towards the entrance Helen thought to herself `Did I really hear that?'

`Perhaps ditto could copy speech as well as appearance, had it been learning English from me?'

“Are you OK dear?” asked David to his wife

“Yes I'm fine just,”

`Should I tell him? Will he think I'm crazy?'

“I'm just excited about my victory and this journey and everything going on” she replied happily

“Yes yes, me too” said David, holding her hand.

“It's a shame, I was hoping to battle him” said Mark

“Me too,” said Daphne “but at least I got to observe this for pokemag, our viewers will enjoy reading about this”

“Nick your Vaporeon is soooo beautiful!” said Amy

“Thanks I do take good care of my water pokemon” replied Nick

“I see I see,” said Gary who appeared next to Nick with a notepad “and talking about caring are you interested in caring for the lovely lady beside you?”

“What? Oh don't start that again” said an irritated Nick

Gary glared at Nick then ran to Amy

“So Miss Frost you mentioned Nick's Vaporeon was beautiful, is it possible you meant to say he was beautiful?” asked Gary hopefully

“No! Well I'm not saying he's not- it's just- I meant- Oh! Grrr” exclaimed Amy who walked quickly ahead to talk to Holly

Gary stopped to make notes when his co-worker reached him

“Gary!” exclaimed Daphne

“What?” asked a bewildered Gary

“I know it's a good story but don't get them angry or they won't even want to be near you!”

“Fine!” snapped Gary

 

Soon….

“Wonderful, Marvellous!” said Marcus' Father “thank you so much!” He pulled John and Violet towards him in a hug, they both winced and covered their noses from the man's overwhelming stench of smoke.

“Its no problem” said Violet quickly

“Yeah really no big deal!” said John frantically

“Well your boats down there” he released John and Violet and pointed to his right were a boat was parked “I'm going to see my son now, goodbye!” He gave the keys to Nick and walked away

“Goodbye!” said several of the team

 

The team boarded the ship, which had 7 small bedrooms each with 2 beds, a small kitchen, a small bathroom and an outdoor eating and sitting area.

“I think we should have a captain” said Daphne

“Well of course I'll be captain” said John

“Not you I meant Nick, since he can steer and has good experience with water” said Daphne

“How do you know?” asked Nick

“Oh please it's my job to know about famous pokemon and famous pokemon people” said Daphne

“OK all in favour?” asked Kevin

Everyone raised their hands

“OK then, Kevin is navigator, Earl and Mark are cooks and Danielle is co-captain. We'll all take turn doing the chores” said Nick

“That's fair man” said Harry

“Kevin how long do you think it will take until we get there?” asked Nick

“Bye the looks of it I would think we'll get there tomorrow evening if we don't run into any trouble” said Kevin

“Trouble?” asked Helen worriedly

“Yes, there's a reason the island hasn't been found before; it has mists, whirlpools, strong winds and of course pokemon surrounding (or `protecting' if you like) the island”

“Oh dear” said Holly anxiously

“Don't worry I'm sure we'll be fine” said Nick encouragingly

“OK let's get this show on the road!” said Gary

“Has anyone seen my candy?” asked John in quite a panicked voice.

Ben (whose cheeks were like footballs) swallowed the contents of his mouth
