“One day, you will understand.” He had promised. That was the last thing he had said before he left her. Now, she sat at the window, watching candlelight flicker across worn glass panes, and wondering where exactly he was, and what important things he couldn't tell her.

It was unfair, so unfair, and if she was the girl she had been, she would have thrown a temper tantrum and malleted him into the ground, as she was wont to do. Now, she was a little older, a little wiser, and a little sadder.

She blew out the flame, and sighed.
