“Um… hello?”
Yellow glanced around the meting room nervously. The Elite Four and Champion had already gathered, along with the remaining gym leaders - all the current ones, of course.
“You're late.” Lance said sharply. The Dragon Master looked impatient, a sheaf of notes in his hands. Yellow flushed.
“S-Sorry…”

She took a seat next to Red, and the Champion simply gave a curt nod. Yellow fidgeted nervously. She had only been sworn in as the new Leader of Viridian Gym two months ago. Giovanni had been fired, of course, since he had been the leader of Team Rocket, and then Green had taken over for a few years, but now he was tired of it and was going to marry his childhood sweetheart, May, so he was leaving his position.
The other unfamiliar face was Charlotte. She had replaced Blaine as the leader of Cinnabar's gym, since the man was getting too old. Misty gave Yellow a smile as Lance flicked through his reports.

“Charlotte? What's the status of the volcano?”
The Cinnabar leader smirked. “Perfectly fine.” < About to go off. I estimate a few more days. >
“Your reports here indicated unusual seismic activity around the area…” < Excellent. >
“I found out that it was a group of lost Diglett. Once they were removed, it ceased.” < Yes… no one can blame this natural disaster on us. >
< And the population will be purged once again. > “Very well.” Lance nodded. “Misty? What about your report?”

“Yes.” Misty frowned. “Due to its popularity as a romantic getaway, I am afraid that the area around Cerulean Cape has become heavily polluted. At the minimum, I request that the beach be made off-limits at certain times of the year when the Squirtles are come to lay their eggs. Organizing a clean-up campaign would also be wise.”
“I can help you with that, Misty.” Lorelei smiled. Misty blushed, and nodded, looking down.
“Then I'll leave that in your capable hands, Lorelei. Did anyone else have something to report?”
Dissenting expressions came from all around the table, and Lance nodded.
“Very well then. I will see you all next month. Dismissed.”
What? That was all?

Yellow stared as the leaders filed out in little clumps. Red followed Lance, and she quickly ran after him, wanting to talk. “Red! Wait up!”
Red smiled kindly at her, and Lance murmured something that made the Champion blush before he walked down the hallway.
“Hi, Yellow.” Red grinned. “Short meeting, wasn't it?”
Yellow nodded. “Are they usually like that?”
“Well, it's summer, so yes. The ones in the fall and winter are really long - we have to review the legislation the Council puts out and that's a pain. But otherwise, it usually is really short.”
Yellow nodded, absorbing the information quickly. “Um… Red… I had something else I wanted to ask you.”
“Shoot!”
“Would you be my boyfriend?” Yellow blurted out.
Red flinched, almost as though she had said something hateful. “I'm sorry, Yellow, but I already have someone.” He said. “You should try finding someone else.”
With that, he practically fled down the hall.
Yellow stared after him, and felt hollow.

< Foolish child. > Charlotte smirked. < Perhaps I should invite her to my gym tomorrow… >
“That's so evil of you!” Red blurted out.
< So? >
“I like it.”
< Of course you would like it, Lance! > Red put his hands on his hips. < But she hasn't done anything in this life. Shouldn't we give her the benefit of the doubt? >
Lance glared, and Red hastily reassured his lover that no, he was NOT in love with Yellow.

< Same feelings I had for Misty. > Charlotte said curtly. < At this point, we don't care. Their presence is enough to set us on edge - since they are our killers. >
< Makes sense. > Red agreed. < Then I'll do it. >
< Are you sure, Red? You're normally not so direct. >
Red grinned. < Destiny could use some excitement. >
“Minx.” Lance shrugged. “Do as you will.”
Red smiled, before a flurry of black feathers covered his form and he transformed. He drew his sword with a wink before he flew off.
“Isn't it nice when he remembers?” Charlotte asked, pouring herself another cup of green tea.
“Mm.” Lance agreed. “How did you do it?”
“What makes you think I did something? I told you. If he loves you, that makes things easier.”
“So it does,” Lance mused, eyes sliding shut. “So it does…”

A week later, Cinnabar Island was covered in molten rock, rapidly hardening to become basalt, all the inhabitants were dead, and the destruction had spread to encompass Kanto as far as Pewter, almost.
It was perfect.
Lance and Red danced in the night, and the other Elite smiled secret smiles.
Long live the Chosen.
