It doesn't mean anything, he keeps repeating to himself, does not matter, because they most certainly aren't in love and even if they were it's just wrong. He winces as he feels Red's hands close in his hair with surprising strength, but it's all right because he's been through worse. He closes his eyes and thinks of pretty dragons spiraling across the sky, and waits because he knows that it shouldn't take much longer. He feels Red collapse against him, gasping for breath, and he smiles, a smile that doesn't really exist, as he stands up and pulls away.

Red stares at him in disbelief, and he knows that he's going to break something important, but it never belonged to him in the first place, and his voice is perfectly calm when he asks, “What, did you think I was in love with you?”

He turns and leaves, before Red can see the tears in his eyes, because… it's safer this way, and pretends not to hear Red cry “Lance!” after him.
