Chapter 3

Their entrance into the town caught a few stares, but nothing overly dramatic. Agatha noted with slight unease that though the clothing here was traditional, almost all held swords. It seemed that this new world was a dangerous one.
She sighed. Well, they would adjust…
They had to adjust quickly, because a man began hitting on Clair, Lorelei told him to lay off, he drew his word, and Lorelei released Jynx. The end result was a frozen ice statue and the rest of the bar staring at them in horror.
Lance sighed.
The bartender shook his head. “Well, it was about time that Clint got what was coming to him. What can I offer you, adventurers?”
“What are you serving?”
“Beer of course!”
Bruno grunted. “How much for a mug?”
“Five coppers, good sirs!”
Bruno pondered for a moment, before he reached into his belt and took out a pouch. He plunked down five pennies. The man squinted at them for a moment, before nodding and handing him a mug of beer.
The others converged outside.

“Well…”
“From my preliminary scan, I have to say that this world seems to be mostly composed of warriors, though there are a few mages. If we are careful, we will gain much respect… for magic is rare.”
“Good.” Lance grinned.
“We know magic?” Red asked.
Clair whacked him lightly. “Our pokemon, Red.”
“Oh!”
“Yes…”
“Quite devious of you, dear sister.” Lance smiled. “But it is worth a try.”

They garnered much attention the day after, and soon enough, an order for work came their way. Lance studied the parchment, before he nodded.
“We'll take it.”
The man deposited a large bag of gold in front of them, jostling the crude wooden table. “Half now, and half after the deed is complete.”
“We understand each other then…”

“What are we supposed to do?” Red asked, as he peered over Lance's shoulder. He shook his head, upon realizing that it was in a more ancient form of the language they spoke. Lance passed it to Agatha, who nodded.
It would be simple enough to complete the job.
“Kill someone…”
Red sighed. He had hoped it would have been more palatable, but one had to do what one had to do when circumstances swung, so he nodded. Besides, it wouldn't be too hard. He could use Pikachu to paralyze them and then slit their throat - eew, that would get blood on him! Fine! Venus could just use Stun Spore, and they'd suffocate…
It would be quick, and there would be no evidence. Right? Right…

The man in question was a rich merchant. Their employer wished to be rid of competition. It was not personal, but still…
“You know Red, Agatha can do it easily…”
“I just feel that I should be responsible…”
“Why? In this world, your status as Champion matters little.”
“That's not what I'm worried about!”
“Then what is your concern?”
“What if you get hurt?” Red asked, looking at Lance. “I mean… you know… and the Viridian Forest isn't here… what if your power doesn't work any more? What will happen to us and our pokémon?”
Lance frowned. He had honestly not considered that. If the Forest did not exist here, from whence would he draw power? Would he be able to generate it on his own, or would he have to find something else to drain from?
The topic was fascinating, if a bit worrying as well.

Red waited as Lance searched for an explanation. Finally, the trainer made a gesture and flicked his blades into his hands. He made a shallow slash on his forearm, before he concentrated.
The light that flickered around his arm was not what they had expected, calming blue with a tint of green. It was white.
Lance blinked.
Lorelei did too, but Agatha looked pensive.
“Lance, what was your secondary type?”
“Besides Dragon Mastery?” Lance frowned. “Ah… probably water, I doubt it was fire or ground type…”
“Odd, then.” Agatha said. “The elements in this world comprise the following. Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire…”
“Wind? Dragons do fly.” Red suggested.
Lorelei yawned. “I'm probably Water.”
“I would be Earth, because Fighting is close to Rock and Ground.” Bruno nodded.
Red hesitated, not quite sure what he was. He decided to wait and see. If pokémon granted magic, then well, he might be water or wind or even earth, but definitely not fire… “What about you, Agatha?”
Agatha shook her head. “Different brand of magic. Necromancy.”
“Figures.” Lance yawned. “I don't suppose there's one type of magic just for Weather manipulation? Like, oh who knows, a Storm spirit?”
“Now that is an idea. There might be…”
“But Weather Manipulation doesn't have anything to do with Healing, does it?”
“I don't think so.” Clair said hesitantly. “I'd guess I'm Water as well.”
“Lance always was special.” Bruno grunted, as Red blinked at him. Bruno hastily colored, looking away.
Lance's fingers twitched for a second. He was not going to interpret Bruno's comment the wrong way. It would be horrifying!
Red seemed to come to the same conclusion, looking faintly green around the gills for a second before Lance kissed him to reassure him.
Bruno closed his eyes, sighing. Those two were affectionate, but he did not swing that way!
Clair and Lorelei giggled, as Agatha shook her head. Children!
