Pokemon Fan Fiction ❯ When It All Falls Down ❯ The Seemingly Endless Road ( Chapter 2 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

I couldn't sleep that night. Against Dad's wishes, I let Wolf sleep in my bed with me. But
it wasn't him that made me restless. It was the fact that Mom's decision held the choice that would
forever change things... for me.

Being as quiet as I could not to wake up Wolf, I left my room and headed to the kitchen.
As soon as I got there I swung open the fridge, hoping to find a drink or snack that would help me
sleep. "Sissy?" I jumped and banged my head on the top of the fridge. I'm never sticking my head
in the fridge again... I don't know why
I did that in the first place. I turned around to find my sister
sitting on counter where the fruits are kept. "Alyssa, what are you doing? It's 2:37 in the morning!"
"I can't sleep," she replied.

"Well... as long as you're here, can't do much about it." I turned back to raid the fridge
again. "Are you going away?" I was silent, then turned my attention to her again. "Lyssie, you...?"
"Yup. I heard everything." I looked at the the 5-year-old, unsure of how to answer. I sighed. "I don't
know, kiddo. It's up to Mom."I want her to say no." I glared at her. "Why would you want that?"
And right before me, Alyssa's eyes welled up with tears. "Because I can't go with you!"

She jumped off the counter and ran to me, holding my waist in an embrace. "Mama's
gonna have another baby, our brother Evan, in 4 months! You won't be here when he's born?"
"Hey, of course I will! Besides, I don't even know if I'm going yet!" She gave no reply, only snivels
and hics. I hugged her back, not knowing what else to do. "If I leave, I'll always come back at
some point. Don't forget that."

"Alaina? Alaina, wake up." I slowly opened my eyes only to shut them back from the
bright sunlight. Mom opened the windows... I sat up and pushed my medium length, wavy, dark-
brown hair out of my face. I saw a sort of unsure look on her face. "What's wrong, Mom?" She
gave a weak smile."Pack up. You're leaving to Newbark Town in 45 minutes." "WHAT?" I jumped
back and fell off my bed. I scrambled to stand up. "What for?" "What do you mean 'what for', to
get your first Pokemon, dummy! Now hurry and get ready!"

I shreiked and hugged my Mom, then tore down the hallway to the bathroom. I was so
eager to get to Newbark Town, I got ready in 25 minutes, packing and all. I swung my backpack
over my shoulder and practically sprinted down-stairs. Dad was in front of the porch, smiling with
pride. Before I walked outside, Mom handed me a PokeGear, complete with a map and cell-phone.
I wasn't fond of wearing things that looked like Batman's utility belt, so I placed it in my bag, which
conveniently still had room.

"Thank you, Mom," I said as I hugged her. "I'll be back in time when Evan will be born."
Mom stroked my hair and said, "You remember to call me once every two weeks, or I'll have your
head." I smiled. "Of course." Alyssa was looking at the ground, refusing to make eye-contact with
me as she clutched the Jigglypuff doll Dad had bought her from Goldenrod a year ago when he was
on another trip there. I kissed her forehead and said, "I promise to catch you a real Jigglypuff while
I'm traveling." She looked up at me and grinned. "Really?" "Really." I replied. "And when you're older,
I'll take you to see the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City." We hugged eachother, then I joined Dad
outside.

"Ready?" he asked. "Ready... oh no, wait! No I'm not!" I replied, alarmed. "Why, what's
wrong?" "Kasey, she has to come with me! I can't leave without her!"

Although I nearly scared Kasey half to death in my excitement, when she processed
what I had told her, she became as phsychotic as me. My father talked to my Uncle, and after awhile,
he agreed that Kasey could go with me, so long as we always stay together. Kasey quickly got ready
and joined me and Dad in front of her house.

"You won't do anything stupid?" Uncle asked. "Nope." "Are you sure?" ".....Nope." He
hugged us good-bye, and we were finally on our way to Newbark Town. To finally live the life we've
always dreamed of.

A few wild Pokemon put glitches in our path to reach Newbark Town, but with my Dad
and Wolf with us, we got there in less than a half-an-hour.

As we passed through the tiny town, Kasey had to comment, "This town is a haunting
reminder of Cherrygrove..." Dad halted, and we stared at the medium-sized building in front of us. It
was a plain brown color with 2 small windows and a wood roof. "This is it?" Kasey said. "I guess so."
"This is the nation-wide known Professor Elm Laboratory." Dad said. "C'mon." My heart began to pound
so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest, while Kasey was as cool as ice, trying to find the next
hot guy that would hopefully pass by us.

We entered the laboratory. "Ugh, no hot guys here..." Kasey remarked. I slapped her arm.
"Ow, what? I'm being honest! Would you rather have me lie?" I rolled my eyes, then saw a man walk
toward us in a white lab coat. He pushed up his glasses and held out his hand. My Dad took it. "Ah,
James, long time no see!" "I't's been awhile," Dad answered with a smile. Prof. Elm looked at me and
Kasey. "And you must be the spirited young daughter, Alaina!" I grinned, "Hello Prof. Elm!" Before
she could make a rude remark, I remarked "This is my younger spit-fire of a cousin, Kasey." She
glared at me, but I innocently ignored it.

"So, you will be obtaining your first Pokemon as well?" I didn't give Kasey a chance to
say no and ruin my fun. Instead, I excused ourselves for a minute and took her outside.

"What the hell was that for?!" she spat. "Look, you have to get a Pokemon, too!" "No
I don't!" "Yes you do. Who's going to help if you're in trouble?" "You, of course." I nearly keeled over
but stood my ground. "I mean what if I'm not there?" "I can defend myself!" she said pridefully. I
glanced at her 5 foot 2 stature. "Yeah... okay. Against other Pokemon?" I shot back. She turned her
back to me. I was quiet, fighting my inner thoughts not to beg her. ".....Please?"

She turned around and looked at me, seeing the hurt expression I wore. "Oh, for...
don't look at me that way!" She sighed, "Fine. I'll take a Pokemon... but I'm only doing this for your
stupid sake!" I hugged her for about 30 seconds until she wiggled away from me saying, "Yeah,
yeah, enough of that." I giggled.

We re-entered the lab, with Prof. Elm and Dad standing next to a table with 6
pokeballs. "Are you two ready to choose?" Prof. Elm asked. "But I thought we only get to choose
out of 3 starter Pokemon?" I said in a confused manner. "That's correct. But Professor Oak, from
the Kanto region, is visiting the Johto region right now, and he brought his 3 starters with him:
Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Mine are: Chikorita, Totodile, and Cyndaquil." "So... we
get to choose out of 6?" Kasey asked. "Yes. A few other beginner trainers are arriving in awhile,
so take your pick now."

I smiled at Kasey and walked over to the table. I looked at the pictures set in front
of the pokeballs, each indicating what the creature looked like. I finally came to a hault in front of
Totodile's pokeball. I was in love. Totodile was adorable, and friendly looking too. I picked up his
pokeball. "I choose him!" I said. I felt like I was glowing. "Your turn!" Prof. Elm exclaimed to Kasey.
She walked over to the table as I stepped back. She looked intently at all of them, then caught
sight of the Charmander. I swore that I saw a hint of one of her rare, genuine smiles. She picked
up his pokeball. "I'll take this one."

"You should give them nicknames as well, just for convenience," Dad suggested.
I had a grin 10 miles wide. "Jacoby. His name is Jacoby." I looked down at the pokeball in my
hands with a feeling I had never felt before... but it was exhillarating. "That's a girl's name!"
Kasey teased, breaking through my warm moment. "No it isn't!" "Yes it is!" "No, it could be
used for a boy or girl, so shut up!" "That's enough," Dad interrupted. "It's a good name, Alaina.
Now, what will you name the Charmander, Kasey?" "I'll name him... Sonny." I wanted to comment
the name, but hesitantly held my tongue.

Before we thanked Prof. Elm and left, he requested a small favor. "If you can,
would you please stop by Mr.Pokemon's house, just past Cherrygrove City? He says he has
a major discovery for me to study, and I'm curious." I could tell Kasey wanted to give him a big,
fat, no, but I cut in, saying, "Sure we will!"

We passed through Cherrygrove until we reached the route that began its
formidable path to Violet City, and Dad stopped. Kasey and I looked at him. "You two... this
is where you begin your journey on your own. After you deliver whatever discovery it is that
Mr.Pokemon has for Prof. Elm, the only dependance you have is your Pokemon..... and
eachother." Kasey looked at the ground, and thousands of thoughts raced through my mind
all at once.

"Always... always remember... In time, you will learn to care for your
Pokemon more than life itself. They will feel the absolute same for you. You will form
bonds that no one can shatter, and be reckless at times for their sakes. But you two,
though it seems impossible now to picture yourselves any closer than you are presently,
will come together in a final understanding and respect for life and how much Pokemon
truly make the best difference in your lives. Never forget that... always remember."

He hugged Kasey, then went over to me and hugged me until I thought the
life in me would be squeezed out. "Good luck." Dad turned around, not looking back, while he
headed home to Cherrygrove.
