Chapter 4-

The sun rose again and cast a brilliant light across the horizon.
Akane had ran out of the door, saying she wanted to get some fresh
air. Ryouga stared at the blank wall, thinking about what Akane said
yesterday night.

"Don't you understand? It's our purpose. Whether or not we like it or
not, it is a matter of honor and fate."

Shadow rubbed against Ryouga's knees. Absentmindedly, Ryouga reached
down and scratched Shadow behind his ears. Shadow, content, set his
head against Ryouga's legs. He was broken out of his reverie when
Tsuki suddenly appeared before his eyes. With a start, Ryouga jumped
out of the wooden chair and landed on the dirt floor with a yelp.
Growling, Shadow sprang up.

"Goddess, Tsuki. Don't every sneak up like that! You scared me."

Amused, Tsuki looked down at the sprawled Ryouga. Shadow calmed down
when he saw that it was Tsuki, and once again settled down on the
floor.

"Aren't you graceful today?"

Glaring at him, Ryouga grasped Tsuki's offered hand. He dusted his
pants off.

"Well, it's your fault for scaring me."

"You seemed to be thinking about something... serious."

"I guess..."

Ryouga shook his head violently. Then he turned around and looked at
Tsuki.

"Where's Hime-chan?"

"I left her with Morning Dew. She's in the meadows."

At the mention of Morning Dew's name, Ryouga scowled. Then his
expression turned intense again.

"I don't understand something."

Frowning, Ryouga sat down on the chair again. Tsuki raised his silver
eyebrows and leaned against the wall.

"What do you not comprehend?"

"Hime-chan said something, and it's stuck in my mind. I think my
brain's going to explode if I think about it one more time."

"That won't be a pretty sight."

"You tell me. It's gonna be my brain splattered across the walls."

Grimacing at the visual image Ryouga's words brought, Tsuki stared out
the window. Shadow whined softly as he rolled over.

"So what did Akane say?"

"Hmmm... Tsuki, do you think we're blessed by having these powers?"

Tsuki, startled, turned to face Ryouga. Ryouga didn't meet Tsuki's
probing, pale eyes. Ryouga stroked Shadow's fur as he waited for an
answer. Tsuki took a deep breath.

"I don't know, Ryouga. I think... it depends on how you look at it.
You could say you're blessed or you could say you're cursed. It's up
to how you use it."

"I know that Hime-chan hates her powers. Yet I could remember a time
when she loved her ability. She'll turn her golden eyes to me and
she'll say `onii-chan, I feel so alive when I use my powers. As if I
returned to my true home.' Then I wonder what happened to her... It's
like she gets farther and farther away from me as she uses her gifts.
At times I'm terrified I'm going to lose her."

Tsuki looked away at Ryouga's confession of insecurity. To Ryouga,
Akane was his whole world and being. Without Akane, Ryouga didn't
desire to live. Cautiously, Tsuki opened his mouth.

"You know that Akane loves you. In some ways, I don't think I see the
true Akane until she's around you. I could see it in how her eyes
soften and how her face brightens. It's like being with you sets her
soul free from the cage that binds her."

"..."

Silently, Ryouga looked out the window. A small smile appeared in his
face.

"I guess you're right. We are twins, after all."

Ryouga abruptly sprang up. He turned to the door and reached for the
knob before pausing.

"It still doesn't answer my question whether we're cursed or not, but
I think for now, being with Hime-chan is enough. If she's there with
me, I think we could fight anything off. Even death."

With a grin, Ryouga walked out of the door. Tsuki straightened and
stared after Ryouga. A small smile touched his lips.

"You're right, Ryouga. As long as we're with Akane, nothing matters...
until he comes and rips her away from us. How bleak our future is..."

~*~

Ryouga waited until Shadow lazily walked out of the cottage.

"Goddess, Shadow. Aren't you getting lazy?"

With a grin that bared his sharp canines, Shadow bounded toward Ryouga
and playfully set his paws against his chest. Grinning similarly,
Ryouga resumed wrestling with Shadow. Dust flew around them as they
engaged in one of their oldest games. Suddenly, a yelp pierced the
racket.

"Don't move!"

Startled, Ryouga and Shadow both turned their heads to see four
strangers. Two girls and two boys were staring at them fearfully. One
of the girls, a brunette with lively green eyes reached for a sharp
weapon on her belt. Ryouga examined the weapon and saw a mini-spatula.

"We'll save you. Don't move so I won't hit you."

Realizing what she was about to do, Ryouga jumped up from his position
under Shadow's big paws. Shadow twirled and landed on his four paws as
he growled threateningly at the four people. The girl quickly snapped
her wrist and released the small projectile. Ryouga suddenly blurred
and caught the weapon in his hand. He put a warning hand on Shadow's
tense body.

"It's okay, boy. Down."

Shadow, obeying his master, relaxed, but his pale blue eyes never left
the girl. The girl, bewildered, looked at Ryouga. One of the boys, a
silver haired, femininely handsome one, stood in front of the girl.
Ryouga carefully examined the strangers. The two teenagers were
accompanied by other two young people. The other two were dressed in
traditional Chinese garb. The Chinese girl had a natural sultriness
about her, and her face was exotic with amethyst eyes. She had thick,
long lavender hair, and definitely carried herself with confidence.
The Chinese boy, on the other hand, looked quiet with calmness
surrounding his body. His manner was dignified and cool. With
shoulder-length jet black hair and slightly foreign features, his
ancestry was definite. Ryouga narrowed his eyes. Why were the
villagers visiting so early in the morning? The girl with the long
brown hair had shown some definite skill when she deftly threw the
mini-spatula. And he noted the big spatula across her back. Were they
here to fight? He stared at the weapon in his hands and threw it at
them. The Japanese boy caught it mid-air. Silence settled once again.
Then the Japanese boy started to speak nervously.

"Konnichiwa... Hibiki-san, I presume."

Ryouga curtly nodded.

"We're here to see Akane-san. We just wanted to say thanks."

Ryouga slowly straightened but his eyes never left the strangers.
Kontansu, taking this moment of opportunity, rushed on.

"You see, Akane-san saved my wife's life."

He gestured toward Ukyo, who was still warily glancing at Shadow.

"And we wanted to show our gratitude to Akane-san."

Ryouga seemed to think for a while and then turned to Shadow. His eyes
commanded Shadow to keep an eye on these strangers while he went to
fetch Akane. Shadow rose and tensed to obey his orders.

"Wait here."

Ryouga turned and started running towards the meadows. The four
villagers suspiciously glanced and Shadow and tried not to flinch.
Shadow, enjoying the discomfort, never took his pale eyes off of them.
Kontansu and Ukyo gulped slightly while Mousse and Shampoo looked on
with interest. Soon Shampoo spoke.

"Look, airen. They are as blessed as we heard them to be."

Mousse, smiling, turned to his new wife and long-time best friend.

"Hai. I've never seen such authority before."

Shampoo returned the smile and jabbed Ukyo on the side.

"Don't worry, Ukyo-chan. The wolf won't attack us unless we do
something wrong. I saw some Chinese ones before, and the animal
doesn't hurt anyone unless the people disobey his master's orders."

"Who said I was scared?"

Ukyo tried to smile. Then Kontansu winced.

"If you're not, can you please let my hand go, Ukyo-chan? I can't feel
my hand."

Ukyo quickly unlatched her crushing grip and sheepishly smiled.

"I'm sorry, anata. I guess I was just... surprised."

Tenderness shining through Kontansu's silver eyes, they stared into
Ukyo's sparkling green ones. He gently stroked her dark brown bangs.

"It's okay."

As the two lovers stared adoringly at each other, the Chinese couple
rolled their eyes. Simultaneously, they raised a fist and hit the
Japanese couple's heads. With a vein throbbing in their foreheads,
Shampoo and Mousse shouted.

"Get a room!"

Ignoring the Chinese teens, the Japanese couple continued to gaze at
each other. Shampoo shook her head while Mousse sighed.

"Even we're not this bad, are we, airen?"

"Hai."

Then the Japanese couple turned and grinned.

"Yeah right, you're not this bad. You guys are ten times worse than
us."

"What do you mean? I'm offended! We're not so sickeningly sweet in
public."

Kontansu snorted.

"Uh-huh. How about the time you sprinkled red roses from your house to
our store? Huh? What do you call that?"

"That was our three-month anniversary! I wanted to do something for
Shampoo-chan. It was a special holiday!"

Shampoo indignantly nodded in agreement. Ukyo's eyes sparkled evilly
as she went on.

"Okay, then how about when Shampoo was wearing that scandalously short
and sheer dress? You went on for hours about how beautiful Shampoo
was."

"Yeah, to quote straight from you, Shampoo was a "gorgeous Amazon"
with a "body of a goddess" and a "face of an angel" who was so
wonderful that you couldn't even stand to look at her in the eyes."

Shampoo smiled felinely at the pleasant memory.

"Then airen took me into the bedroom and showed me how he felt. I
could still remember how he..."

Ukyo and Kontansu suddenly blushed furiously at Shampoo's intimate
words. Mousse frantically tried to put a hand over his wife's mouth.

"Shampoo! Can you please stop talking about such... indecent things in
public?"

At Ukyo's plea, Shampoo innocently blinked her eyes.

"Why? Besides Ukyo-chan brought it up."

"I did not!"

"You did too!"

Mousse and Kontansu looked at each other, resigned. They waved their
hands to stop their bickering wives.

"Okay, you two. That's enough."

"Hmph! Well, I'm not the one who talks about such private things!"

"Why so private? Don't all couples make love? I think Ukyo-chan is
cold wife to not talk about such things. Back in Amazon tribe, we
speak proudly of our husbands' abilities. It's nothing to be so
ashamed of!"

"Well, in Japan and everywhere else, it's considered offensive and
coarse to talk about such things in public."

"I don't understand. Making love is a beautiful act... Why hide it?"

"Ahem!"

The four teens turned around to face Ryouga and Akane. Ryouga's cheeks
were faintly red, while Akane had a mirthful glint in her golden eyes.
Ukyo, Kontansu, and Mousse furiously turned bright red, while Shampoo
innocently turned around to face them. She waved her hand.

"Konnichiwa!"

Smiling, Akane bowed in return.

"Konnichiwa."

Ryouga looked away, embarrassed. Ukyo, Kontansu, and Mousse finally
returned to their normal colors and smiled.

"Konnichiwa, Akane-san."

"I'm sorry to interrupt your rather... interesting conversation."

The three, embarrassed, looked away again while Shampoo tilted her
head.

"No, it's okay. Do you think it's wrong to talk about mating in
public, too?"

The three other teens groaned and hid their red faces in their hands.
Ryouga turned to Akane and muttered something about chopping more wood
and hightailed out of the scene, a blush staining his cheeks. Akane
smiled again, and shook her head no.

"Well, I wouldn't know. I'm not married, yet."

"Ai-yah! Such a pretty girl like you, too."

Akane giggled softly. Ukyo and Kontansu looked up, surprised at
Akane's giggles. They stared at wonderment. Akane offered a hand to
Shampoo.

"Please do come in. I'll love for you to have some tea with me."

Shampoo eagerly clutched Akane's hand and pulled her still blushing
husband behind her. Ukyo and Kontansu followed, marveling at Shampoo's
ability to break through people's shells.

~*~

Akane carefully poured the hot tea. She was certainly surprised when
onii-chan had rushed up to her and talked about some four strangers.
And she was even more surprised to see the Kounji couple with two
other villagers. She noted that Ukyo-san looked better with the
healthy glow on her skin and bright eyes. So why did they come? Then
the Chinese beauty had gone and talked about her private part of her
wedding life. Truth be told, Akane actually liked the Chinese girl.
There was an honesty and directness in her purple eyes that Akane
respected. This was the type of girl who said what she wanted, and
fought for what she wanted. Suddenly, a tap on her shoulder startled
Akane. When she turned around, she came face to face with Shampoo.

"Do you need help with that, Akane-chan?"

Akane shook her head no, and started toward the sitting room. Shampoo
followed her, a bright smile on her face.

"Here's the tea. I'm sorry to make you wait."

Akane set the tray down. The three nodded thank you and reached for a
steaming cup. Shampoo sat down next to Mousse and happily reached for
a cookie.

"This is delicious, Akane-chan."

Ukyo winced at the familiarity Shampoo used.

"Thank you."

"My name's Shampoo. This is my husband, Mousse. And the frowning girl
across you is Ukyo, and that's her husband Kontansu. Call me
Shampoo-chan!"

"We've met."

Akane said, acknowledging Ukyo and Kontansu.

"Hai."

"Of course, how could I forget. You're the one who saved Ukyo-chan's
life."

"You could say... Shampoo-chan."

Shampoo smiled, pleased by the progress in their friendship. She had
taken a liking to Akane when Akane didn't blush at her words like a
sheltered girl. There was something about her eyes that captured
Shampoo's attention.

`She reminds me of those heavenly, powerful sirens great-grandmother
told me about. She certainly looks like one.'

Mousse glanced at Akane with interest. There was nobody who had
captured Shampoo's liking as quickly as this Japanese girl had. He
admitted that there was something about her that drew him to her.
Nothing romantic... but it was more like an understanding. He could
comprehend why his beloved liked this girl so much.

Ukyo stared Akane. She was nothing like the cold sorceress she heard
about. There was fire kindling in her bright golden eyes. This was no
simpering miss, and Ukyo instantly liked the confidence and power
around the beautiful girl.

Kontansu critically examined the girl before him. This girl was
definitely not the girl he remembered in the stormy night. Instead of
a wildness and a bitterness inside her eyes, there was a soft peace
radiating from them. It was as if Akane the Healer and Akane the
person were two different people. Puzzled, he kept staring at Akane's
face until she turned around and smiled at him. Startled at being
caught staring, he started to blush. His pale eyes met her expressive
eyes and he thought he saw a lingering sadness there, until Akane
turned her face to resume her conversation. It was only for a moment,
yet Kontansu could actually visibly experience the piercing sorrow and
loneliness. He shook his head, trying to clear it from the powerful
emotions.

"Well, Akane-san. I wanted to say thanks for you saving my life."

Suddenly, Akane's face clouded and her eyes became guarded. Ryouga
stepped into the room with a pile of firewood in his hands. Concerned,
he looked questioningly at Akane.

"Akane-chan, are you okay?"

"Hai, onii-chan."

"If these strangers are bothering you, then I'll take them outside and
teach them a lesson. I won't mind, really."

"Onii-chan! They're our guests! Besides, they're not bothering me."

"I could feel everything through our link. You're disturbed by
something."

"It's nothing. Stop worrying."

"Hai, hime-chan. If you're sure you don't want me to deck them."

"I'm sure. Come in, I'll introduce you."

"Haha... I'm not sure if I want to meet the purple-haired one,
though."

"Don't tell me you're scared."

"NO! It's just that... well..."

"Heh~ onii-chan! I never knew that you were afraid of such frank
talk!"

"Well... I don't want her tainting your innocent ears with such talk."

"It's too late for that, onii-chan..."

"Huh?"

"Nothing. Just come in. Shampoo-chan isn't too bad. She's really
honest, that's all. She doesn't like these barriers people put around
each other. She doesn't understand polite pretenses."

"There's a difference between honesty and embarrassing talk."

"Just come in, Hibiki Ryouga. I don't want you being rude to them!"

"Hai, hai."

Ryouga reluctantly stepped into the room. The other four were staring
at each other by the silence that ran through the room. Yet they
noticed the understanding between the twin siblings.

"My name is Hibiki Ryouga. Nice to meet you."

~*~

Moments later, the four returned to the village. Akane and Ryouga sat
in front of the burning fire. Ryouga began to talk.

"That was an interesting afternoon."

"Hai."

"What possessed you to invite them in?"

"I don't know, onii-chan... I just felt like telling them to come in.
You have to admit, though. They're not too bad."

"Hmph!"

"Aww... onii-chan."

"I don't know, hime-chan. Those villagers know nothing but to hurt
us."

"Maybe they're different."

"Maybe..."

Ryouga silently added in his mind, `For your sake, Hime-chan, I hope
they're different. I don't want you to get hurt again.' He could
already tell that Akane was getting attached to the four teens,
especially to the one called Shampoo. And when Akane got attached to a
human, she got nothing in return except for pain and heartbreak.

"I really hope so."

"Hmmm? What did you say, onii-chan."

"Nothing."

A comforting silence ran between them. Then Akane began to speak
wistfully.

"When they were here, it felt as if we were ordinary human beings for
once. I missed that feeling... Now that I learn it once again, I have
a worse craving for it... for the sense of belonging..."

Akane closed her golden eyes and hid their poignant expression. Ryouga
stared at her forlornly, silent and longing for the joys they were
denied all their life.

"Oh, hime-chan... Sometimes I wish that you and I weren't born like
this. Sometimes I wish that we could be ignorant as any other human
being."

"But we aren't... Those are wishes and desires. They are thing we
can't have."

The night came once again and covered the bright sunlight. As the sky
grew darker, the brightness diminished.

"Things we can never have...":

Akane's whisper sang through the night and mirrored the solitude of
the twins.

~*~

Meanwhile, the two couples were hiking down the tall hill. Shampoo
seemed to be locked in deep thought as she weaved around the rocky
path. Mousse walked next to her and finally questioned her.

"What's wrong, Shampoo-chan?"

"Oh, airen. I just thought... did you notice how Akane-chan became all
closed up when we started talking about her powers?"

"Well, I did notice it, but why?"

Ukyo joined in.

"It's like she became a different person."

Kontansu slowed to a stop. The three others, too, stopped walking and
questioningly looked at him. He started to haltingly tell them about
the rainy night.

"Well, when she came to help Ukyo, it was like a different person was
there. As if the cold bitterness inside her was unleashing its power.
She seemed untamed, wild, and most of all, unbalanced... I saw someone
opposite today."

"Hmmm..."

Silence reigned as the four people started thinking.

"Could it be that Akane-chan doesn't like her gifts?"

"It could be, Shampoo-chan. It could be..."

"Ukyo!"

A loud yell brought their attention. Ukyo called back.

"Who's there?"

"It's me. Hikaru."

The local coffin-maker, Hikaru looked like a ghost with sunken eyes
and he had a strange obsession with stakes and dark legends. The only
people he bothered to interact with were Ukyo and Kontansu.

"You have to come into town right now! There's someone you have to
meet. Someone came claiming to have been sent from the Prince of
Dark!"

"Nani???!!!"

Ukyo and Kontansu started racing down the hill, following Hikaru.
Shampoo and Mousse fearfully looked at each other.

"Do you think it's him?"

At Shampoo's question, Mousse looked away. He whispered softly.

"I don't know, Shampoo-chan. I don't know."

Shampoo begged silently.

`Please don't let it be him. Please. I just found happiness with Mu
Tsu. I don't want anything to wreck our love and happiness.'

The Chinese teens followed their friends, hopeless yet desperate
wishing mirrored in their hearts. Somehow they already knew, but
couldn't help but deny the dreaded reality. They increased their speed
in their hurry to reach the town.

~*~

"Let me speak to the town leader," Nabiki commanded.

The villagers looked at the young woman, awed by the cold yet
authoritative air about her. She was clothed in a sleeveless black
shirt and black leather pants. A simple metal armband encircled her
upper shoulder and her chin-length brown hair was held back with a
black ribbon. It was of no surprise when she said that the Dark Lord
sent her. Then among the terrified townsfolk, Kuno boldly emerged. He
bowed with a flourish and offered Nabiki a red rose.

"That is my honorable father you're looking for. May I inquire your
motives, oh my dark beauty with the glowing eyes?"

Nabiki calculatingly stared at the young man with her haunting eyes.
He was dressed like a traditional samurai, complete with a wooden
bokken. She smiled. Then her light brown eyes flared and her armband
transformed into a metal whip that seemed more liquid than solid. She
swiftly moved her arm and wound the whip around Kuno's neck and pulled
him physically to her feet. She placed a booted foot on his chest. The
red rose fell from Kuno's hands and landed on the ground. Viciously,
she placed her other foot on the rose and crushed it to the dirt. Kuno
stared at the shiny black ankle-boots.

"Come on, little boy. Still think I'm a dark beauty?"

Choking, Kuno clawed at the whip that was cutting off his oxygen
supply. Then a pale girl in a tight, revealing leotard sidled to the
front of the crowd.

"Unhand my brother, you peasant. I don't care if you killed him, but
if you kill him that way, we won't be able to have a magnificent
funeral. His head might burst open and that will be unpleasant to look
at."

Nabiki looked up and glared at the girl. Kodachi arrogantly stared at
the guardian, oblivious to the silent anger in Nabiki's eyes.

"And who are you?"

"I am Kuno Kodachi. But better known as the beautiful Black Rose."

Nabiki smirked, amused by the underserved arrogance of the girl.

"And who are you, peasant?"

"Nabiki. The warrior of metal and the guardian of the Lord of Dark."

With that, her brown eyes flared once again. The silver bracelets
adorning Kodachi's wrists suddenly melted and bound her two hands
together. Kodachi screeched in surprise. Then before she knew it, her
feet were also encased in metal. She landed with a thud next to her
brother. Still smirking, Nabiki jerked the girl to her feet by pulling
Kodachi's pony-tailed hair. Kodachi's piercing shriek rang through the
terrible stillness.

"Now, where's your father?"

Nabiki questioned silkily, giving Kodachi's jet-black hair another
twist.

"Nabiki. That's enough. Stop playing around with such worthless
creatures."

A black horse suddenly appeared behind her. Nabiki obediently stepped
aside and released the bondage of the two Kuno siblings. Her armband
regained its original shape as she nodded toward her master, who was
shadowed by the night. The two siblings crawled away in fright and
unsteadily stood up when they reached the crowd. Their panic-stricken
eyes stared at the dark but handsome young man.

"Lord Ranma."

"So this is Nerima? It's proving to interesting so far. I can't wait
until I get to the main course."

Ranma's lips curved up evilly. His hoarse laughter rang through the
night and the villagers stared at him out of terror and mysterious
wonder.

"Soon, it'll be soon."

Ukyo, Kontansu, and Hikaru paused before entering the town square.
They hid behind the building and stared at the two strangers.
Suddenly, the young man on the horse flicked his wrist and twenty
soldiers in black appeared before him.

"I'll require lodging. Let me speak to the leader."

At his command, Kuno scurried to find his father. Frowning, Ukyo and
Kontansu looked at the so-called Prince of Dark. He was wearing a
black armor edged with silver and his dark blue eyes cynically and
condescendingly surveyed the huddled people in front of him. The wind
slowly fluttered his braid. Kontansu could see a sheathed sword at the
young man's waist.

"That guy is just some psycho. We have to go and stop him."

Ukyo stood up and started to march over to the square. A grip on her
shoulder prevented her and pulled her back to their hiding place.

"Huh? Shampoo-chan! What did you do that for?"

Then Ukyo got a good look at Shampoo and Mousse's faces. Shampoo's
expression was one of sheer horror, and Mousse looked pale.

"What's wrong, Shampoo-chan?"

Shampoo brought a trembling hand to clutch Mousse's hand. Mousse
protectively held her in his arms. Her whisper puzzled Ukyo.

"Kami-sama. He's really here."

"Shampoo-chan?! What do you mean, Shampoo-chan?"

"Oh Goddess, please protect us from this evil."

Shampoo began to rock back and forth clasping her colds hand together
in a frantic prayer. Ukyo clutched Shampoo's shoulders and stared into
her blank eyes.

"Shampoo-chan! Shampoo-chan!"

Ukyo's worried cries didn't reach Shampoo. Shampoo kept muttering one
word over and over as Ukyo shook her.

"Please."

~*~

"He finally came."

Cologne looked at the dark sky. Then she abruptly turned to return to
the village.

"It is time for me to go."

The darkness swallowed her completely.

"And the battle begins."
