Chapter One: Haunting Voices

::The Kamiya Kasshin School's kitchen::

*The snow...once pure white, then stained crimson with my love's blood.
this one could still see it in it's mind after all these years, this one couldn't rid itself
of the memory, and it's haunted this one since. She was killed by 'this one's' hands,
not his, 'this one' had killed her, this one's fault, she jumped in front of this one's blade.
this one will guess that some people would say that this one's not to blame, but 'this one' swung the blade,
'this one' almost cut her in half and 'this one' stopped too late.*

~It's your fault...~

*No...*

~You meant to kill her..~

*No, this one didn't, this one didn't mean to!*

~Yes you did, and she gave you that final scar as a lasting reminder of her hatred for you.~

*No! No, she didn't! She loved this one as much as this one loved her and you know it!*

~She hated you, she knew you killed her boyfriend and that he was the only one to scar you,
and she finished it, a symbol of thier hatred! Accept it, you know I'm right!~

*No...you're wrong...*

"...You're wrong!" Kenshin yells, slamming his hand down onto the countertop.
Five dishes, two cups and a glass precariously balanced on the countertop's edge,
crash to the floor.

Sanosuke, who is drying the dishes Kenshin washed, throws Kenshin a questioning look.
He shoulders the dish towel and places a hand on Kenshin's shoulder.

"Hey, Kenshin? Are you okay, buddy?" he asks, looking at Kenshin worriedly.

Kenshin doesn't hear him, he clenches and unclenches his fists, so tightly that his knuckles
turn a pale white. His eyes flash amber.

*This one is glad Kaoru-san and Yahiko are with Megumi-san today. They would be bothering this one
with many questions.
At least Sano won't say anything.*

Kenshin's eyes return to thier normal purple hue and he looks up at Sano with a innocent smile.

"This one's fine, Sano, that this one is." he replies cheerfully.

Sano nods, returning to drying the dishes as Kenshin sweeps up the broken dishes.

*I don't believe him, but I won't push, he'll tell me when he wants to.*

Kenshin mentally sighs.

*This one knows he doesn't believe me, but this one can't tell him because he'll be worried, that he will.
This one will just continue to pretend that nothing is wrong.* he thinks to himself, carrying the broken
pieces outside and dumping them into the trash pile.

Sano has finished drying the remaining dishes and is at the door watching Kenshin's blank
expression worriedly. He goes outside and taps Kenshin on the shoulder, he turns and looks at Sano
with a look of bewilderment.

"Hai, Sano? Did you want something?"

Sanosuke grins sheepishly.

"No, I just wanted to tell you that I was finished, that I'm leaving, and you can go ahead and find Hiko."

Kenshin nods, he had been wanting to go talk to his sensei for a while now, but had never found the time.

"Thank you, Sano." he replies, getting his sword and telling Sano to lock the gates on his way out, before
disappearing.

::Somewhere up in the mountains::

Kenshin arrives at his master's home a day later, but hesitates when he's about to knock on the door, he looks down
and turns away, ready to go back down the mountain. However, the door opens and Hiko looks down at his apprentice
sternly.

"Hai, Kenshin? You've come here for something, now come inside and tell me what it is." he asks, taking a swig from
his sàke bottle as Kenshin turns to face him and bows respectively. He follows him into the house and takes a seat on
a cushion.

"Hai, sensei. Remember when I was a hitokiri and that purple scarf you found tied around a grave marker where I buried my 'family'?"

Hiko nods silently, taking another swig of sàke.

"Well, it belonged to a girl, Tomoe Yukishiro. We pretended to be husband and wife for a while, I fell in love with her, but in a final fight
between myself and the man who had kidnapped her, she jumped in front of my blade and was killed. She gave me this scar." he tells him,
tracing the shorter, horizantal(sp.)scar on his cheek. Hiko nods again.

"So, let me guess. It's been 14 years since that and you can't get it out your mind. Right?" he asks, taking another swig from his bottle.

"Hai, sensei. I'm tortured by it day and night, can you help me?" Kenshin asks, desperately.

~No one can help you. I'll haunt you for the rest of your days. You'll never forget, you killed her.~

Hiko looks at Kenshin, regarding him silently through one eye. The other eye looking into his now empty sàke bottle.

Kenshin doesn't see his gaze, he's too busy battling the voice in his head.

*This one didn't do it on purpose.*

~How do I know that?~

*This one tells you the truth. This one did not kill her on purpose.*

~I don't believe you. No one will, you've killed her and now you'll deal with it.
No one, nothing can help, or make you forget. I won't let it happen!~

*Just go away.*

~Hahaha. You think I'll listen to you? Just keep torturing yourself with trying to forget. No hope.~

Hiko looks at his apprentice's face go between the emotions of anger, sadness and self-hatred for a while
before he finally slaps him across the face, hard.

Kenshin looks up from his new place on the floor up to Hiko, holding his cheek angrily.

"Master?! What was that for?!"

Hiko looks at him smirking.

"You were daydreaming. Here, have some sàke." he says, picking up another bottle and pouring himself and Kenshin a cup.

Kenshin looks at the amber liqiud and sighs, absentmindedly pouring it out onto the ground. Hiko's face turns pure white.

"What are you doing?! You just wasted the sàke! Ahhh!"

Kenshin looks down at Hiko, who is giving the sàke a proper funeral.

"This sàke has departed this earth because of my baka apprentice, who will be severely punished for killing the perfection of it."
he glares at Kenshin who twiddles his thumbs innocently.

*Will I ever get help?*
