Irony
Chapter 6:
Sibling Rivalry
Notes: Once again my muses have been hibernating; but have now awakened to find their host slacking in her fan fiction duties. So one very frustrated writer and a pathetic English term paper outline later this chapter is the ultimate result…now if you'll excuse me I have to get my butt in gear and write that English paper.
There really should be a law against handsome demon lords. Oh you laugh but I am dead serious! In fact after the hellish day I've had I think every demon should be outlawed. Yes even me, because then maybe someone would be kind enough to shoot me with a purified arrow to put me out of my misery!
Overacting you say? Well let me share with you how my day went yesterday.
Actually it started the evening before. Starting out fairly normal, Inuyasha and I were holding a ramen noodle slurping contest and so far I was winning. Next thing I know this flea demon shows up, chats to Inuyasha about someone trying to break into his father grave looking for a sword yadda yadda so and so forth.
Anyways to make a long story short before the night is over Inuyasha, Kagome and myself are facing a giant black demon and just take a guess as to who was sitting on it's right shoulder.
If you guessed scary demon lord that I ran across a week ago, you are correct sir, here's your door prize. But if that wasn't the kicker it turns out that the demon lord, Sesshomaru, had captured Inuyasha's mother. Inuyasha gets mad, kills the demon, we escape, only to discover the woman isn't his mother but a soul sucking maternal spirit working for Sesshomaru to find the grave…is you're head spinning yet? Care to take a break? Good I could use one too so I'll take it slow from here.
After Kagome smashed the water image of the female spirit Inuaysha is freed. Thinking for one brief moment that we were going to be alright then realizing how sorely mistaken I was when Sesshomaru walked right up to Inuyasha and clasped his clawed hand tightly around Inuyasha's neck.
“Amazing,” Seeshomaru mused as he stared into Inuyasha's face, “It's hidden in such a place that not even this Sesshomaru would have thought to look for it.”
With that Sesshomaru poked Inuyasha's right eye…no not `poke' gorged it out. There was a spurt of blood which had miraculously avoided from staining Sesshomaru or his white clothes. Have I mentioned before that handsome…oh I did good no need to repeat it then.
Sesshomaru pulled his hand back to revel a shiny black pearl which he had extracted from Inuyasha's eye. Then he released Inuyasha from his grip, who dropped the to ground with an ungraceful `thud' followed by a string of curses as he raised his hands to shield his wounded eye.
Jaken trotted up to him just as Sesshomaru dropped the pearl. The frog servant cracked the pearl with his staff and a portal suddenly appeared. Just as casual as you please both Sesshomaru and Jaken just walked right into the portal which was increasingly shrinking in size.
Meanwhile Kagome was fussing over Inuyasha, who's eye was still bleeding. Still staring at the shrinking portal I couldn't help but growl. I could charge in and try to stop Sesshomaru but at the same time I couldn't just leave Kagome or even Inuyasha since this was his own family that was at the center of his, and it was HIS sword that the demon lord was after.
Turning I shouted at Inuyasha, “Are you so weak that a little bit of blood will hold you back Inuyasha?” I taunted, becoming increasingly impatient by his weakness.
Inuyahsa glanced up at me, glaring with his left eye, “What the hell are you talking about fox?”
“Look, you're half-brother is one upping you and what are you doing? Whining and wallowing in your own blood just like human.” I finished with a sneer, `conventionally' forgetting that I use to be human and would like to be one again if possible.
Slowly Inuyasha got to his feet, despite Kagome's efforts to get him to sit back down. He angrily shook her off then proceeds to walk up to me. His face so close to me that we were almost nose-to-nose.
“Say that again you damn kitsune!”
Instead of saying anything I merely back into the portal.
I gave him a look that all but dared him to follow me before I allowed the portal to take me wherever it was led to.
The next instant I found myself riding on the back of a bird or rather a skeleton of a bird. As it flapped it's enormous bony wings I looked around to see the entire landscape was nothing but mist and piles of bones. Up ahead was a massive skull of a canine which could have easily swallowed half of Tokyo and Godzilla to boot. Since the bird was carrying me to the skull I guessed that this is were Sesshomaru was heading and if I knew Inuyasha well enough he would be right on my heels…pissed off but at least he would be here in order to claim his birthright rather then letting his half-brother take it.
`Why do I honestly care?' a part of me asked. To be honest, I don't know what made me do and say the things I did before I left through the portal. I'll just scratch it up to demon testiness I suppose. It just angered me to see him give up so easily so I couldn't help but goad him.
My bird landed on a ledge of the mountain where the canine skull rested. Quickly I jumped off the bird and raced up the rocky path to the skull. I should have looked back or even waited for Inuyasha and Kagome join in this little venture but once my adrenaline started racing there was nothing I could do to stop it let alone slow down.
At last I reached the skull, ducking into a opening I looked at the piles of bones inside. Following a pathway in the middle of the mass of bones I looked ahead to see Sesshomaru and his servant were standing in front of a raise platform and sticking out from the middle of that platform was a sword in it's scabbard. Just as Sesshomaru's hand reached to touch the sword I heard someone behind me holler.
“Oi!”
Turning my head I was relived to see Inuyasha and Kagome but that was before Inuyasha marched right up to me and punched me in the nose.
With my eyes watering I really couldn't see Inuyasha very well but I did my best to take a swipe at him.
“You bastard! What was that for?”
“Because you pissed me off you damn fox!”
“Ouch! I think you broke my nose!” I said as I gingerly moved my hand away from my nose to see if it was bleeding.
“Ha now look who's whining like a human! That will teach you not to mess with me!” Inuyasha crowed.
“Why you…” I growled as I leaped to my feet and lunged at him. There was a flurry of claws as me and Inuyasha rolled down the pile of bones each trying to take a decent chunk out of the other one. I am not sure how long we were wrestling each other to the ground but I do remember what broke up apart.
“Hey Inuyasha do you smell something burning?” I asked sniffing the air as I had him pinned to the ground, both of our fists locked in combat.
Inuyasha wiggled his nose, sniffing the air as well, “Yeah I do. I think it has to do with the spout of flame coming right at us…crap”
Quickly we broke apart just before the flames could burn us to a crisp. Our attention now turned to the direction that the flame had come from. Once our gazes were there it revealed a smug looking frog demon hold a staff and a stoic appearing but evidently confused demon lord since he had yet to touch the sword during our fight.
I don't think that he even realized that he hadn't touched it until Inuyasha yelled at him.
“Hey! Get away from my sword!”
At this the demon lord scoffed, “Your sword? Less than a hour ago you didn't want it, now it's yours to claim?” A rich chuckle escaped his lips.
Okay new rule, if handsome demon lords must exist they must not laugh like `Oh-I-am-so-bad-yet-so-good-looking-kind-of-laugh'…well that's what it sounded like to me at least.
While distracted by my inner monologue Inuyasha, Kagome and myself watched in horror as Sesshomaru tightly grasped the hilt of the sword.
“Behold the master of the Tetsusaiga, the fang sword which can kill a hundred demons with one swing!” he stated.
The dramatic effect was lost though when the sword just wouldn't leave that stubborn pedestal, not to mention the funny crackling noise that it made kind of like a shorted out toaster. Sesshomaru withdrew his hand which had flames dancing around it before they vanished.
Jaken looked like he was on the verge of panic, even Sesshomaru looked confused by this turn of events, and stupid me couldn't help but pipe up.
“I take it that wasn't meant to happen?” I asked.
“There is a barrier around it,” Sesshomaru stated, but I could tell that it wasn't directed at me…or anyone else for that matter. This guy must like to talk to himself.
Suddenly Inuyasha bolted, attempting to take Sesshomaru down by himself.
Before he could strike his half-sibling Kagome shouted at him, “Inuyasha take the sword out!”
“Neh?” was the inu's reply.
“Sesshomaru couldn't remove it so if you can then it will disgrace him!” Kagome pointed out.
Hmm makes sense at least.
Realization dawned Inuyasha and his mouth split into a cocky grin as he marched towards the pedestal, gripping the hilt of the sword with one hand, glaring at his brother as he did.
I crossed my clawed fingers, hoping that Inuyasha could pull it out; if not then we have a very angry demon lord on our hands and no weapon of any sort.
Things seemed to be looking up when `toady' started freaking out since the barrier accepted Inuyasha and not Sesshomaru. A glance at Kagome proved that she was hopeful that with one pull Inuyasha would get the sword.
So he pulled…pulled again, pulled harder, used both hands, cursed, placed his feet on the pedestal and pulled with all his might. He didn't get the sword but his feet did leave nice claw indentions in the marble pedestal.
Finally he released his grip on the sword, staring at it with a mix of confusion and loathing.
After Inuyasha released the sword Sesshomaru stepped up behind him.
“This farce is over,” he hissed to Inuyasha, who turned around and had a look that screamed `eep'.
“Prepare to be dissolved by my poison claw. Dokkasou!”
What is it with these people and screaming their attacks! Even the good-looking demon lord is doing it!
`Cough' Excuse my rant. What happened next was that yes Inuyasha's did melt…or rather the sleeve of his outfit…what you really took me seriously? Please, he's too annoying to be `offed' by mere poison. So Inuyasha dodged, but dear `half-brother' wasn't about to give up easily. There was a lot of `swipe-dodge' action going on but at the moment I was distracted by the toad that was waving his staff.
“I shall help Lord Sesshomaru!” he screamed.
Recalling that staff was the thing that had spewed fire at me and Inuyasha I moved to stop him but amazingly Kagome was already there and had stepped on the toad's head.
“You…you stupid wrench!” the demonic toad croaked underneath Kagome's brown school shoes.
“Keep quiet you!” Kagome snapped as she watched the fight between Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. There were some very near misses and more than once I wanted to join in the fray and assist Inuyasha but the more I thought about it the more afraid I was. Not the demon lord mind you, I KNEW that he would kick my ass; instead I worried that I would loose control of my powers again and would attack anything that got near to me. Could be Jaken, which would be a bonus in my opinion, but it could also include Inuyasha and Kagome so I cowered, standing next to Kagome, doing nothing but watching.
Suddenly Kagome fell over when Jaken bucked up underneath her feet. She fell back but managed to grab onto the hilt of the sword to keep from collapsing on the pile of bones.
At that same instant Sesshomaru managed to clip Inuyasha's shoulder with his poison claw. Even from the distance between us and the fight I could smell burning flesh…which is a very sicking smell, be you human or demon.
“Inuyasha!” shouted a worried Kagome. As she moved forward her grip on the sword tightened and to my utter amazement the sword easily pulled out of the pedestal.
In the back of my mind I couldn't help but think `King Arthur: Japan Feudal Era Style.'
I am not sure who stopped the fight first but suddenly the entire room had their eyes on Kagome, who blushed and shrugged her shoulders, “I am sorry it just slipped out.”
At this statement Sesshomaru left Inuyasha, even though the half-demon still tried to attack him and turns his attention back to him. It proved fruitless though. I inserted myself between Kagome and Sesshomaru just as he reached the pedestal.
His right eyebrow quirked a bit, but that was the only facial movement he made before he grasped my left arm with his poison claw. I cried out in pain as the poison caused my flesh to burn and literally bubble. While I was howling in pain Sesshomaru roughly shoved me aside to reach Kagome.
As I struggled to get back to my feet I saw him staring intently at Kagome.
“Who are you?” he demanded to Kagome, “How were you able to withdraw Tetsusagia?”
“S…stay back or I'll cut you!” Kagome threatened even though she was visibly shaking.
“Leave her alone!” Inuyasha shouted as he approached us.
Sesshomaru cracked his knuckles, “I didn't think so, she is after all a companion of yours.” When he finished Sesshomaru's claws started to gather the poison on it's tips and were aimed at Kagome's neck
“No.” I whispered. Suddenly I could see all the times I had failed Usagi, the most recent was leaving her alone to fight Galaxia. I just couldn't fail again!
Suddenly I couldn't see Kagome, but I could see melted bone surrounding where she use to stand with just the sword sticking out. Looking at Sesshomaru, did he really dissolve Kagome? Franticly I sniffed trying to catch Kagome's scent but it was hard to tell since my nose instantly focused on Sesshomaru.
`Not now damnit!' I scolded myself as I cautiously approached the melted bone dome, trying to sniff her out, that's when I heard a voice from inside it.
“Inuyasha! Ami! Anyone!”
“Kagome? Are you alright?” I asked, all but clinging to the melted bone which encased her.
“I am fine…well it is dark and kind of cramped in here but I am not hurt physically. What's going on outside?” she asked.
“Uhhh well…Inuyasha and Sesshomaru are fighting again.” I didn't have the heart to tell her that it looked like Inuyasha was losing.
Suddenly the `dome' started to shiver and cracks began to appear in which bright pink light spilled out from. Quickly I backed away, I had learn very early in our adventures that `pink light' means bad things will happen to demons that touch it or get in it's way.
“Whew, that was close. I thought that I would never get out of there,” Kagome stated.
For a feat that to the girl herself seemed unimportant once again she had gained Sesshomaru's and Inuyasha's attention.
`Hey!” Kagome shouted at Sesshomaru, “You did that to me didn't you! Prepare yourself!” she said, sounding serious as she clumsily pointed the sword at Sesshomaru….then promptly walked over and hand it to Inuyasha.
“Here you go Inuyasha, go get him!” she said.
I just shook my head. Poor, poor delusional Kagome.
Behind Inuyasha, the demon lord Sesshomaru smirked.
“Stupid girl. You honestly think that this worthless halfling can beat this Sesshomaru? Well we shall see how he fares against a full demon in his purest form.”
He's referring to himself in the third person now? What is wrong with these people…uh demons?
However my rant was interrupted by the spectral that was Sesshomaru transforming. His face elongated, so did his limbs. Thick white fur started to replace his skin as he grew to about a good forty or maybe even fifty feet tall. When his transformation was finished we were all looking up at a huge, hulking…white dog. It's blood red eyes rolled around crazily as it's teeth dripped salvia drops that burned holes into the bones he was standing on.
As Makoto would say, `We are so screwed'.
I could literally feel the power radiating off his form. It caused me to shiver for there was no doubt in my mind that we were all going to die…and not in a pretty fashion either.
Inuyasha however looked overly confident, “Feh. So he's in his true form? Big deal, I can take him.” He raised the sword and leaped in the air. With a strong swipe he aimed for the blue crescent moon on Sesshomaru's forehead only to bounce off of the full dog demon as if he was nothing more than a flea.
It was obvious that the sword was useless. Even if Kagome's `power of the pink light' would damage Sesshomaru I didn't want her getting in-danger again so that left me. But what could I do? I am to afraid to use the powers I was slowly discovering and I don't think any of them could damage the demon lord especially since he was in his purest form.
Wait purest form…that's it!
No, wait, bad idea. Last time I did that I ate crow…literally and then tried to kill Inuyasha and Kagome.
I had to do something though since Inuyasha was only making Sesshomaru angry by buzzing about him trying to poke him with his sword.
That settles it I had to get Kagome safe and out of the way so that I could transform.
“Kagome,” I began.
“Yes?” she asked, a slight tremor in her voice told me that she was worried.
“I need you to find a safe place to hide. I am going to transform into a full fox demon. I need you to promise me that if things start to look bad that you'll try to get away.”
“But Ami.”
“Promise me!” I snarled, lightly grasping her shoulders.
“Please,” I began again, trying to soften my tone, “I promised to watch over you and protect you. I very well can't do it if I lose myself in my demon form so for a little while I need you to find a place to hide and if you have to run away.”
Slowly she nodded in understanding and as soon as I released her Kagome left to find a good hiding place. I waited a minute to give her a head start before I slowly released control of my true form.
The same bone crunching, extending, and the growing of fur was the same but as soon as I opened my eyes again did I feel a difference. The last time I was in my `true' form I was hungry for blood, willing to kill anyone and anything that got in my path. I had almost been prepared to quell this blood rage just long enough to wound Sesshomaru, return back to my regular form and be of what assistance I could to Inuyasha but everything felt so different.
For one thing my nose was filled with HIS scent. Following my nose I faced Sesshomaru who was angrily snapping at a red thing which was bouncing up and down on his head, trying to cut with some kind of sword. The angry red bug was insignificant though. Now the dog demon had some potential in being interesting.
What the! Interesting? Noooo I've got to attempt to kill him, not to be fascinated by him! What is wrong with me? Where's that `must kill' instinct? Come on attack him, he's the enemy! Get him!
`No, get him to come to me,' was the reply of my `demon' portion of my mind
Instead of attacking I just sat there, all nine of my black-blue tails flared out on display as a deep purr rumbled in my chest.
The demon form of Sesshomaru uncrossed his eyes from staring at the `red bug' and looked my direction. At this I `shyly' turned my head to one side, hiding behind at least three of my tails. I had his attention. He shook his head to be rid of that red bug and slowly saunter over to me. Playfully I gave a short yip before backing up a little and sliding to the side, keeping my nose and jaw hidden behind my tails. When the dog demon reached me he left a few feet worth of space between us before leaning forward and started sniffing my fur.
I purred again and slowly backed away again, acting as if I wasn't at all interested in him. He closed the gap that my step back had created and his time nuzzled my neck with his nose. I lowered my tails and licked his jaw line. Just then the red bug returned this time he aimed for Sesshomaru's eyes.
Sesshomaru growled and swatted the pest to the ground then picked the bug up with his teeth, holding the squirming half demon out to me.
`Aww for me? Why you shouldn't have!' I took the half demon from his teeth and plopped him on the ground. The red pest tried to crawl away but I placed my paw on his back, forcing him against the bones.
“God-damn you idiotic fox! It's me now let me go!” I lifted my paw only to place it back on him. Meanwhile the dog demon moved to lick my jaw line to which I purred loudly and teasingly stroked one of my tails down his back.
Suddenly I was brought out of my haze by a sharp pain in the pad of my right paw. Breaking away with a yelp I lifted my paw to see the half-demon's sword imbedded in the sensitive pad of my foot. I felt my eyes water from the pain and I restlessly tried to shake him off but he just refused to let go. At this Sesshomaru clamped his teeth on the bug and spat him out on the ground sword and all. At this really sweet action I `rewarded' him by nuzzling his neck again.
Below us the inu-half demon was talking to the human girl, who had come out of hiding. A small part of me worried about her safety which confused me. Why should I care about the welfare of a mere human girl or what she and that `bug' were talking about anyways?
Suddenly there was a rustle of power. I looked away from Sesshomaru for a brief moment to see the puny sword of the half demon grow in size as it pulsated with power.
I saw Sesshomaru lean down and I think was going to attempt to eat him. I would discourage that, kami only knows where that thing has been, but hey if he's hungry who am I to deny him a quick bite?
That's when all hell broke loose. The half-demon lifted his sword up and took a strong swipe against Sesshomaru's nose, who howled in pain.
`Oh no! Here, let me look at that!' I `spoke' to him. It was a very deep cut and it seem to hurt a lot. I licked the blood off his wound but he roughly pushed me aside as he moved to get to the half demon.
`Humph men, one minute they love, next minute they push you away to get revenge on their mid-day snack which is fighting back.'
Another strike to Sesshomaru caused another painful howl to shake the walls of the tomb. I winced at the sound. I had to help Sesshomaru. Quickly I moved behind the half demon only to hear the human girl call to me.
“No Ami! Don't hurt Inuyasha!” she screamed.
Ami? Who's this Ami?
Then it clicked into place.
I was Ami.
What was I thinking…or doing?
Did I just lick Sesshomaru?
Oh yes I did.
Bleh! I've got fur on my tongue! Bleck, nasty, yucky!
I moved my paw to scrape off my tongue
What the hell got in to me just then!
I didn't have long to dwell on it though for in the next second Sesshomaru was flying through the air. His left arm completely severed from the rest of his body. He de-transformed out of his demon form and into a human-like appearance. Recklessly I dove to follow him after him.
Which leads up to this morning, with me babysitting a wounded demon lord.
“So what's your opinion on serfdom? Do you think it's wrong or right?”
Sesshomaru growled at me.
“Okay so you don't like politics. What about fashion? You know I am kind of curious as to what that fluffy thing you have wrapped around your shoulder is.”
“Grow growl, snarl snarl.”
Oh this is going to be “fun”
Notes: Sorry if this chapter really isn't up to par. I've had to condense the second volume of the Inuyasha manga, (I don't even want to think of how many anime episodes that translates to) Anyways I promise the next chapter will be better, scouts honor.
