[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Surge walked into the Hot Topic at Mobotropolis mall and looked around for any employee she could talk to.

 A green hedgehog leaned on the counter, tapping on the computer. “Ah, come on.” He muttered. He tapped a few more keys. “Finally!” 

 He looked up and froze. “Uh… sorry, we’re not open yet.” He said, running his hand through his green and black tipped spines. “I left the gate open for whoever I’m interviewing today.”

 “I’m here for the interview.” Surge said. “So where is the manager?”

 The hedgehog grinned nervously. “I’m the manager.” He replied. “I’m… uh… Manic.”

 Surge nodded. “Oh, nice to meet you, I’m Surge.”

 Manic stood there for a moment, then led Surge to the back office. “Okay….” He said. “Oh, just have a seat. I gotta close the gate.”

 Surge sat down in the old folding chair in the office.

 Manic hurried over to the gate, closed it, then ran back to the office. He sat down in the computer chair behind the folding table desk. “Alright… uh… what am I doing?”

 Surge raised an eyebrow. “Interviewing me for the cashier job.”

 “Oh, yeah.” Manic said. 

 Manic and Surge sat in silence for a few moments.

 “Are you okay?” Surge asked.

 Manic laughed nervously. “Uh… thing is, I really like you.” He said. “I even forgot my name just looking at you and…. Ah, man, I’m gonna get fired. I probably creeped you out too. I’m so sorry.” 

 Surge smirked. “It’s fine.” She replied. “I won’t say anything if you hire me, Cute Stuff.”

 Manic sat there wide eyed. “I….”

 “Look, I need the job.” Surge said, leaning back in her seat. “I’d go out with you regardless. I don’t see how it’ll interfere with anything unless my impression of you is wrong and you’re super creepy. So…?”

 “You’re hired.” Manic replied. “Can you start Monday?”

 “Sure.” Surge said. 

 Surge and Manic exchanged numbers before she left the store.

 Surge walked into the apartment. “I got the job.”

 Kit looked up from making lunch. “That’s great.” He said. “I knew you’d get it. I made you this cool recipe I found on Pinterest to celebrate.”

 Surge sat down across from Kit. “Tacos?”

 “Taco sushi.” Kit said. “So… I got a little chicken, an avocado, and mixed in some chipotle seasoning to the cream cheese. I rolled them up in a tortilla and sliced them into rolls. Then, I topped it with sprinkles of cotija cheese.”

 “Looks good.” Surge said. She checked her phone. “He wasted no time.”

 “Who?” Kit asked.

 “Manic.” Surge replied. “My boss and… uh… is it weird that I’m going out with my boss tomorrow night?”

 Kit gave Surge a dumbfounded look . 

 “Oh, it’s like a taboo, isn’t it?” Surge asked.

 “I’d think so.” Kit replied. “It’s unprofessional, at least. We never worked an actual job, so I don’t really know.”

 Surge groaned. “Why did he have to be cute or say anything?”

 Kit shrugged as he served Surge her meal. “Uh… I bumped into Sonic at the grocery store.” He said. “He said congratulations and he was gonna swing by with his siblings to welcome us to the place.”

 Surge sighed. “Why didn’t you tell him I was sick?”

 “Oops.” Kit replied. “I’m sorry. If it helps, he said they weren’t gonna stay long. Just to stop in, give us a gift, then leave. He’s got a concert to do in Downtown Mobotropolis.”

 “Concert?” Surge asked. “Wait, he has siblings?”

 “Yeah, he formed a band with them.” Kit replied. “I didn’t get to ask many questions. I guess it’s like a local band or something.”

 Surge tasted the taco sushi. “Ooh, it’s good.”

 Kit smiled. “Thanks.”

 Manic arrived home and sat down on the couch.

 Sonic (dressed in a black t-shirt, fingerless gloves, and combat boots) glanced up from his phone. “How was work?”

 Sonia (who was wearing a black dress, tights, and boots) poked her head out of the bathroom doorway. “How’d the interview go?” She asked. “Tell me while you get Sonic’s eyeliner on.”

 Manic glanced at Sonic. “He’s already done it.”

 “I was bored.” Sonic muttered.

 Sonia brushed her fur and spines. “Okay, anyway?”

 “Uh… is it okay to date your employee?” Manic asked.

 Sonic dropped his phone.

 Sonia stepped out of the bathroom. “Are you serious?”

 “Yeah.” Manic replied. “I couldn’t help it. I barely got through the interview, she was so pretty. She doesn’t mind.”

 “She was probably desperate for the job.” Sonia said, throwing her hair brush at Manic and missing him and Sonic entirely. “She may not like you at all.”

 “She was flirting with me.” Manic replied.

 Sonia rolled her eyes. “You boys think any time a girl glances in your general direction that she’s flirting.”

 “She was playing with my spines and called me cute stuff.” Manic said. “I’m pretty sure that’s what she said, I could barely hear her over my own heartbeat.”

 “Okay, so it sounds like she is.” Sonia said. “That’s still inappropriate, Manic.”

 “Yeah, I agree with sis.” Sonic said. “That’ll get you fired and may cause you problems if you need to find another job.”

 Manic sighed. “Maybe our band will take off soon and this won’t be a problem.”

 Sonic got up. “We gotta go if we’re gonna welcome Surge and Kit to their new home and make the concert.”

 Manic got up as well. 

 Sonic pulled a ring out and tossed it into the air.

 The triplets stepped through the portal as soon as it opened up.
