Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Freedom or another prison ❯ Fourteen years later ( Chapter 2 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Surge groaned as she read her day’s schedule in her room.

Kit, who was sitting by Surge’s desk to play on her computer, turned to face her. “What’s wrong?”

“This is worse than prison.” Surge muttered.

Kit got up and rolled the chair closer to Surge, who was sitting on her bed. “What’s on your schedule today?”

“The last condition of the treaty is to be ratified tomorrow.” Surge muttered.

Kit furrowed his brow. “What was… oh. That.”

“Yeah.” Surge said. “Apparently, I’m marrying Prince Manic, whoever he is. I hadn’t even seen a picture of him.”

“Do you have to?” Kit asked.

Surge tossed her phone on the bed. “Do you want to be publicly executed or roboticized?”

“Can he do that?” Kit asked.

“Does it matter?” Surge asked. “He’ll still do it.”

Kit pinned his ears back. “I guess not.”

Surge slowly got up. “I have to get ready, so do you.”

Kit left the room as a drone brought in Surge’s dress and shoes.

Surge looked at the black bell sleeved dress and low heeled ankle boots with black studded wristbands.

The note on the dress’ hanger said that the only reason why she was being allowed to wear this instead of the typical frilly gowns she was made to wear was that Prince Manic preferred this look over the traditional attire.

“At least he has reasonable tastes.” Surge muttered under her breath as she took the dress. She laid the dress on the bed and set the shoes on the floor, then headed for the shower.

She turned the shower on and combed her spines out as she waited for the shower to warm up.

A part of her longed to escape Starline’s control by any means possible that wasn’t just in her dreams. The haughty platypus dictated everything in her life and shocked her with the rings she was forced to wear if she did something to displease him (she was mostly a smart aleck who wouldn’t conform to royalty etiquette).

She hadn’t been able to do anything fun or dress the way she liked in years.

“At least Manic seems to be a step up.” Surge muttered under her breath as she got dressed. “I just wish I didn’t have to marry him right away.”

Surge sighed. “Why is this my life?” She thought. “I survived the fire for this?”

The intercom in her bedroom crackled on. “Hurry it up in there.” Dr. Starline demanded over the intercom. “We leave in a few hours.”

Surge finished getting ready, then pressed the button on the intercom. “I’m ready.” She said, pulling her spines up. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

Surge left the room. “At least I’ll get away from him.”

Manic’s hand trembled as he combed his damp spines out. “I can’t believe this is happening.” He muttered under his breath. “This is ridiculous. I haven’t even met this girl. The least anyone could do was let us meet years ago.”

Manic flinched as someone knocked on his bathroom door.

“Bro?” Sonic called. “Are you okay?”

Manic set the comb down and walked over to the door. He opened it. “What do you think?”

 Sonic nodded. “I know.”

“Who came up with this stupid rule anyway?” Manic asked.

 Sonic shrugged.

“At least you knew Sally for years.” Manic said. “I hadn’t met… I don’t even know this girl’s name.”

 “Surge.” Sonic replied.

“Maybe she won’t be stuffy if she has a cool name like that.” Manic muttered.

“Maybe.” Sonic said. He glanced at the door. “Mom sent me to hurry you up.”

Manic sighed. “Why is this happening?”

“Because we had to be born into this family.” Sonic said.

Manic shuffled over to his bed, where his black suit and boots were waiting for him. “Tell Ma I’ll be there in a minute.”

Sonic hugged Manic. “Hope it goes well, lil bro.” He said. “I know Mom’s said this about a hundred times, but if it doesn’t go well, just let us know. We’ll handle it. We won’t let you stay in an abusive relationship.”

 “Thanks, bro.” Manic replied.

Sonic ran out of the room, the draft blowing Manic’s clothes into the floor.

Manic laughed weakly as he picked up his clothes. “Ma would kill him if he got my clothes wrinkled.” He said as he started to get ready.
