Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Sonia: the Guild ❯ Death in the family ( Chapter 1 )
Sonia jolted awake as her phone rang. She reached for her phone, knocking a few of her books off of her nightstand.
Shadow yawned.“I thought you told GUN not to call you about cases at night.”
Sonia answered her phone. “Sonic? What-”
“Manic… his whole family….” Sonic cried.
“What happened?” Sonia asked.
Shadow sat up and held Sonia’s hand.
“They’re gone.” Sonic cried. “Car wreck, sis. A real bad one. We’re at the hospital now.”
“We’re on our way.” Sonia said, voice breaking. She hung up.
Shadow hugged Sonia. “I heard.”
“I knew he’d get in a wreck one day.” Sonia sobbed. “He was an awful driver when we were teenagers.”
Shadow shook his head. “I helped him with his driving when he started the Guild.” He said. “He occasionally did driving jobs for Guild members after that.”
Sonia sniffled and wiped her eyes with a tissue. “Then maybe it wasn’t his fault or it was just an accident.”
“It could’ve been a guild hit.” Shadow said as he started the car.
“The guild?” Sonia asked. “I thought we took it down.”
“I heard someone’s taken it over.” Shadow replied. He backed the car out of the driveway and sped off. “I’d say it was somebody that had an issue with Manic.”
“Do you think it was that tenrec girl?” Sonia asked. “But didn’t he pay her back for wrecking her car?”
“I don’t know if he ever finished paying Surge back.” Shadow replied. “She’s a master assassin and made her hits look like accidents. She was the second most powerful member of the guild.”
“Who was the most powerful member?” Sonia asked.
“Me.” Shadow replied.
“I should’ve known.” Sonia said, leaning against the door panel. She brushed back her spines. “So you said that Gerald did genetic experiments on you. What about Surge?”
“She’s cyborganic.” Shadow asked.
Sonia shook her head. “I’ve seen her, she’s not- oh, are the cyborganic parts under her skin like in Terminator?”
Shadow nodded. “Did you notice the rings on her fingers?” He asked. “They can fire sparks of electricity via a neuralink to a chip in her brain.”
“Why cyborganics?” Sonia asked. “You’re powerful without cyborganics.”
“Why not?” Shadow asked. “Gerald was so preoccupied with the fact he could do it and Surge was more willing to be a cyborg than I was.”
Sonia rolled her eyes. “She’s weird.”
“So’s your brother.” Shadow said. “He knew she did that because he thought it was cool. I think that was at least one reason why he was attracted to her back then.”
Sonia sighed. “Of course.”
“The only reason why he didn’t sign up for that himself was because he was afraid of surgery and needles.” Shadow said. “He never explained it to me.”
“He had a bad experience at a hospital when we were ten.” Sonia said. “He had to have an emergency surgery for his appendix and he said they were stabbing him with the needles. They let him get a UTI from the catheter.”
Shadow nodded.
Raindrops began to fall.
Sonia traced a little heart in the corner of the window. “All of this over her stupid car?” She asked. “I would’ve bought her a new car.”
Shadow pulled into the hospital parking lot. “There’s more to it than that.” He replied. “I don’t know the details, but they went from seemingly deep in love to the relationship ending badly. I never asked and Manic never explained. He quit the Guild before I did and I never had any dealings with Surge.”
Sonic marched over to Sonia and Shadow. “They won’t let us see him.”
“What?” Sonia asked.
“They won’t let us see his body.” Sonic replied. “They said his body is too badly burned and we don’t want to see him like that.”
Sonia placed her hands on Sonic’s shoulders. “I understand, but you don’t want to see him if he looks that bad.” She said softly. “You don’t want to remember him like that.”
Sonic fought back tears. “I wanna say goodbye to my brother, sis.”
Sonia hugged Sonic. “I know, I know.”
Sonic and Sonia cried on each other’s shoulders.
Shadow’s smart watch vibrated.
Shadow discreetly looked at the message.
The text was from a strange number. It said: burner phone; I have a plan, I know you do too.
Shadow nodded and quickly cleared the message out of his phone and smart watch. He stepped over to Sonia and rubbed her shoulder.
