~Chapter 1Long red-brown hair swishing behind her, Serenity Wheeler darted down the dark New York alleyway. The look on her face was one of determination but not desperation; Serenity was never desperate, although she'd certainly necome adept at faking it over the centuries. She'd gotten adept at faking everything, really. It was just who she was, who she'd been for thousands of years. An actress. A faker. A con artist. A trickster.A temptress. But now, now that ever-annoying angel was here, and onto all Shizuka's old tricks. Not that Shizuka was incapable of thinking of new ones, of course, but it was just so freaking irritating! And that was why Shizuka was running now. She'd heard the enemy calling her name and had to hide somewhere the angel wouldn't be able to pester her with stupid offers of friendship, or insistence that Shizuka could be redeemed, if only she'd ask forgiveness...Shizuka knew better. Forgiveness and redemption were not available to the wicked, the fallen. Angels were so naïve sometimes. The demon climbed on top of a lidded trashcan and jumped from there onto the small, metal balony outside someone's apartment. She'd hide there, she decided, and just wait for Tèa Gardner -- that was what the angel called herself now, in this day and age, wasn't it? -- to run by. Tèa, like most angels, was incapable of noticing what was in plain sight. It was an unfortunate flaw that Serenity intended to exploit to the best of her ability."Hi," said a friendly voice from nearby."Hi," Serenity replied in much cooler tones, until she recognized the voice and blinked, turning to face the person who was sitting beside her. It was a girl with short brown hair and blue eyes, dressed in angelic white robes (in stark contrast to Serenity's own tight, short black dress). "Tèa -- !""I was waiting for you." Tèa laughed merrily. "I figured you would try to hide from me, and we both know I can't possibly outrun you, not if you were really intent on getting away, so..."Serenity scowled. "I get it." Her little-girl voice, although perfect for tempting human males with, sounded odd even to her own ears when Serenity let it have a biting edge. Of course, the only time that happened was around Tèa. As annoying as she found the angel, Serenity didn't actually hate her, and Tèa was the only being around whom Serenity's guard was ever down. She sighed. Unlike her brother (and most of the other demons she knew), Serenity could recognize when she'd been beaten. "I'll give you five minutes, then, starting now. Go ahead and lecture me about forgiveness and redemption, and I'll pretend to listen and then forget everything you said as soon as you're gone. Let's get this over with."Tèa's bright blue eyes darkened slightly. "Why do you assume I'm going to lecture you? Maybe I just want to talk."Serenity couldn't help but smile. "Because with you, 'I just want to talk' always means 'I want to give you a long, boring lecture'. Do you remember back in the Middle Ages? All I wanted to do was convince people to burn each other at the stake, but you kept saying, 'I just want to talk. I just want to talk. Come talk to me.' and when I finally did agree to talk to you, you immediately started doing what? Lecturing. And then that one time in Warsaw -- ""This has nothing to do with Warsaw!" Tèa interrupted, cheeks slightly pink. "What if I just wanted to ask you a question?"Serenity blinked, genuinely surprised. Both girls heard someone saying something inside the apartment whose resident's balcony they were camped out on, but when they realized the mumbling was accompanied by loud snorting, they relaxed. Although they were invisible to human eyes in their current forms, the chance that they might be overheard by particularly sensitive humans was always something of a danger.
It took Tèa longer to calm down than it did Serenity."What would you possibly want to ask me about?" Serenity said in a whisper. "What would you even trust me with? It's not my job to give you good advice. It's my job to drag you down to Hell with me, genius." Serenity didn't even know why she was warning Tèa about this. After all, it wasn't in Serenity's job description to give warnings, either. If Tèa wanted to be an idiot, then Serenity should revel in it, right? And do everything to bring down Tèa, make her pay for her innocence...But Serenity couldn't quite bring herself to do that. "I want advice about -- " Tèa looked nervously toward the apartment.Serenity rolled her eyes. "It's asleep. It can't hear us.""Don't call the human an 'it'! Call the human a 'him or her' or a 'he or she'!" Tèa scolded, eyes narrowing. Serenity knew that Tèa had a soft spot for humans. Serenity had nothing but contempt for the animals herself, and generally found Tèa's insistence on treating them with respect annoying. Before Serenity could reply, though, Tèa plowed forward. "There's this man," the angel started. "You're good at getting men's attention. I'm... I'm not. And I..." Tèa's cheeks went a great deal pinker than they had the mention of Warsaw. Tèa lowered her eyes.Serenity couldn't help allowing herself a small laugh. "And you want me to help you land a guy?" she said, amusement evident. Tèa looked up just long enough to glare, which made Serenity laugh even more. "I thought angels couldn't screw, though..."Tèa opened her mouth and promptly shut it. Then she opened it again, objecting, "We can if we're truly committed to and in love with the person!" When Serenity giggled at that, too, Tèa quickly added, "And it's not about sex anyway! So there! I just like him! It doesn't mean we have to... have to...""Screw?""MAKE LOVE!"Serenity sighed and started to play with one of her long bangs. "So who's the lucky guy? Is it that short angel you're always with?" "Yugi?" Tèa looked suprised. "Oh, no. Yugi's just a friend. He's not..." She wrinkled her nose. "We're not like that." There was a long pause from Tèa, but when Serenity just stared, waiting patiently without saying anything, the angel sighed and continued. "It's a human. He's here from Tokyo on business. And he... He's very cold, but I can tell he's got good in him. I can just tell. I... I want to Save him, and then I want to... want to...How do I make him like me as a woman?""...A human?" Serenity echoed. Wasn't that against some immortal creed? She was sure it was. She almost told Tèa as much, but decided not to. It was her job, after all, to get angels and humans into trouble. And whatever Tèa thought, she and Serenity really weren't friends. Besides, the idiotic angel had been warned. "Sure. I've screwed lots of human boys. I'll tell you how to get in his pants.""SERENITY, THAT'S NOT -- ""Now I have to go," Serenity interrupted, with a deceptively sweet smile. She jumped from the balcony to the ground in one soaring, graceful leap, landing on her feet. It wasn't a jump any human could have made without killing herself, especially considering that Serenity was wearing high heels. "Meet me by the hot dog stand in Central Park tomorrow afternoon at three, and be prepared to show me where your boy lives. Or at least be prepared to show me the boy, so I can get to know him and tell you how to do the same. And don't be late! Got it?""O-Okay," said Tèa. "Thank you for helping me, Serenity..."Serenity put on her 'sweetness and light' act, the one she used around her brother, humans and really, anyone who wasn't Tèa. "No problem, Tèa!" the redhead giggled. And then she was off, running into the night.~
That's it for now, but I promise that future chapters will be longer, with more action, more romance and Serenity acting more like the version of herself we meet in canon.
