"Patches" :: Chapter 1

"Attention class!"
All eyes turned to the front of the room.
"We have a new student joining us today. Her name is Patches Santana
Fallon. She is a transfer from Rugifuchi Jr. High."
I twirled my short brown hair as I stood next to the teacher. I wore a red long-sleeve
shirt and a black string around neck with a small bell on the end. My right ear had
two small silver earrings near the top of my ear. A dark brown furry belt was wrapped
around the waist of my long light brown pants. And slung over my shoulder I had my
brown corduroy book bag that, of course, had my notebooks and school thing in it.
But everyone seemed to be staring at my eyes the most. Probably because they were
yellow.'
"Take a seat next third from the front in the second row."
The teacher pointed to the seat. I went over and sat down then pulled out some paper
and a pencil to get started.
"Now class, let's continue with today's notes."
Mr. Kimoto then went on back to lecturing the class. I glanced around at the other
students and felt a little out of place immediately. Everyone was wearing blue
uniforms. But one boy, who was sitting in the back, wasn't like the others. He wore a
green jumpsuit and had his feet up on the desk. I then felt someone poke me in the
arm. I looked forward again to see a girl with short light brown hair and brown eyes.
"Pay attention."
She scolded me. I picked up my pencil and started writing.

Mr. Kimoto assigned a girl named Yukimura Keiko, who sat next to me, to
show me around to my classes and the campus. She seemed really nice and friendly.
But her friends looked at me strangely as we walked through the halls.
"I haven't had time to get a uniform yet."
I tried to explain, but they still gave me questioning looks. Keiko understood though.

"What's up with her eyes? And that tacky furry belt? She'll never fit in…"
I heard other girls whisper as I passed by to go to my classes. I did however get a
couple of smiled from guys, but I can't imagine why though.

After my last class, I got lost in the many halls. I turned down a hallway and
started climbing up many flights of stairs. I finally reached the door and found myself
on the roof. I looked around and saw a boy sitting by himself near the door.
"Hello?"
I walked closer to him. He glanced at me and his eyes looked me over.
"Where's your uniform? Aren't you a student here?"
He questioned me.
"Yes. But I don't have one yet."
Just then I heard the door opened behind me.
"Yuske, what are you doing up here?"
"Stuff."
He answered. Keiko crossed her arms then eased her glare when she saw me.
"Oh, Patches! I was looking for you. Come on, I'll take you to my house."
"Patches? What kind of goofy name is that?"
The boy blurted out, grinning widely. Keiko glared back at him then motioned for me
to follow her back to the door.
"Yuske isn't your run-of-the-mill name either!"
Keiko shot back at him.
"Yuske."
That would be easy to remember.

As we walked to Keiko's house, she told me all about her somewhat-friendship
with Yuske Urameshi and 'the do's and don'ts of school'. As she was talking about
what not to do during lunch hour, a group of tuff looking boys appeared in front of us.
"Alright ladies, just hand over all of your money and we'll let you pass."
I glanced at Keiko, and she just stared defiantly at the three.
"Hey! Are you listening?"
One of them shouted. The other one to his right advanced and grabbed Keiko.
"Let go of me!"
She cried. He then covered her mouth with his huge hand and gripped her tightly,
making Keiko's eyes tear up.
"LEAVE HER ALONE!"
I yelled at them. Their leader nodded to the boy to his left, and he came toward me.
"BACK OFF!"
I shouted. I then brought my fist back and punched him hard in the face, making him
fall back and cry out in pain as he clutched his broken and bleeding nose.
"You bitch!"
The leader yelled at me. He then came after me. He punched me in the side of the
head and I fell to the ground. I held my head, tears forming in my eyes. I then saw a
figure rush up and kick the boy hard in the back. He then went after the one holding
Keiko and knocked him out as well.
"NEVER HIT A GIRL, YOU BASTARDS!"
The figure yelled at the thugs. They other two picked up their friend and ran off life
scared animals. Our savior had been the boy, named Yuske.
"You ok, Keiko? And you?"
We both nodded.
"And don't going blabbing this all over school!"
He warned us with a glare. He then turned and started to walk away.
"Thank you."
I called after him. He paused for a moment, then continued walking and turned the
corner.
"Don't take it personal. He's always like that."
Keiko reassured me.

"Damn carnival! Damn parents! Damn Gypsies!"
I shouted mentally, as I slammed the door closed of the small cottage.
"Why must I be without anyone I know? I miss the comforting wagon, the
cheerful birds singing, and the warm laughing of friends and family when we sat
down for dinner at night! Why did it all get taken away?"
I tossed my bag on the bed and went over to the small wooden vanity. I looked
hard at the girl staring back at me.
"I guess I can't really deny my roots… I am a Romani gypsy. And I will
always yearn for a love of my own."
I sighed.
"Maybe it wasn't that bad… I mean… Mama and Papa loved each other a lot,
didn't they? There's love for everyone, right?"
I then chuckled and shook my head.
"No… not always. What man in their right mind would want a girl like me?"
I then unraveled the long furry belt and let it fall behind me.
"I have a tail,'
I shouted out, 'Larna!', and my brown hair became red and black stripes appeared on
my face. My canine teeth grew long and became fangs. My ears were now longer and
pointier as well. Fur now covered my forearms up to my elbows.
'Pointy ears, fangs, stripes on my face, fur up to my elbows… I'm a freak! I'll
be alone forever!'
I paused and looked at myself, and sighed heavily again. Then I said, 'Anral', and I
became normal again.
'Oh well. I don't care anymore."
I then got out my books and papers and proceeded to do my homework.
