"Life Energy"
Chapter 4 of Part 1

After the accident, Yuske's mother got a new apartment because of the buyer's
insurance on her old home. Keiko and I still visited the house everyday; just to make
sure Yuske's body was in good condition.

One day, Keiko came to me and said she had a dream about Yuske. As she
described it to me, I kept thinking about when I had kissed him on the day of the fire.
What had that meant and why did I do it in the first place?
"Do you think it's real?"
She asked as we walked to school.
"You never know. Dreams have been said to be a window into future events.
But then, that's the opinion of gypsies."
I pointed out.
"Still…"
Keiko sighed and kept to staring straight ahead for the rest of the way.

During Science class, Mr. Takenaka came in and asked for Keiko. Her mother
had fainted in the heat when working at the Ramen shop. Keiko left right away.

After school, I went to the hospital to give Keiko her homework. I came in to
find her father talking with the doctor.
"She just over-worked herself in this heat. She will be fine, but we'll just keep
her here for a night to be safe."
"Thank you doctor."
The doctor then left the room.
"Keiko, they say she'll be fine. Let's go and let her rest."
Keiko didn't budge.
"No. I'm staying right here."
She said firmly. Not wanting to argue, Mr. Yukimura left the room to go home.
"Keiko?"
I approached her.
"Hi, Patches."
"Here's the homework from today."
I handed her a small pile of papers.
"Thanks."
She said. I glanced down at my watch. It was 11:20 pm.
"Patches… remember the dream I told you I had?"
"Yeah, what about it?"
Keiko paused.
"I want you to go to Yuske's… to see it was true. If it is, then you only have till
midnight to get there."
"So… you want me to go? What if it I can't do anything because I didn't have
the dream?"
"Just go to make sure my dream was right. Please, Patches?"
I stood up.
"Alright. I'll go."

I later arrived at Yuske's about 11:32 pm. I went to his room and kneeled by his
bed. Keiko said that, in her dream, Yuske was glowing a gold color all over his body. I
saw no glow of any kind. I crossed my arms and lay my head down over them. I then
closed my eyes and, unknowingly, fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes again, Yuske was standing in front of me.
"Yuske?"
I asked, in disbelief.
"Patches, this is important so listen good!'
He told me, with great urgency in his voice.
'You have to kiss me!"
I blushed greatly when he said that next sentence.
"What?!"
"Don't think I'm a weirdo or anything, but please just kiss me! When you
wake up you'll see me glowing! Kiss me before midnight and I'll come back! Do it!"
He shouted. He then disappeared into the swirly rainbow background.

My head then snapped up and I looked around wildly.
"The dream…'
I looked down and saw Yuske was now glowing an eerie gold color.
'It was true…"
I checked the clock in the room, which was behind me. It was now 11:58 pm. Two
minutes left.
"It was just a silly dream… but what if it was real? Keiko would be devastated
if Yuske didn't come back!"
The first chime for midnight sounded. Then the second, the third, the fourth, and the
fifth sounded next.
"Yuske… I left you die once… I wont left you go this time!"
The eleventh chime sounded. Without hesitating any longer, I bent forward and
kissed Yuske on the lips, praying I wasn't too late. The last chime sounded, and then
there was silence.
"Yuske… please… come back…"
I thought desperately to myself. I slowly pulled away and started down at him, tears
now forming in my eyes.
"Yuske…"
I lay my head down and started to cry.
"YUSKE, NO!"
I shouted out, tear running down my face. My cries quieted down, but I didn't stop
entirely. Then I felt him moving under me. I looked up to see his eyes open and him
starting to sit up. He looked over at me and I nearly fainted out of surprise.
"Nice kiss…"
He smiled. I smiled back and leapt into his arms, hugging his tight.
"Yuske!"
I cried into his nightshirt. I felt his hand on my back and pat it in comfort. He was
back! Yuske was back.
