Yui looked around aimlessly, having about as much experience at shopping as an infant. Distantly Hawthorne Heights music was playing over the radio as she and Kurama walked back into the furniture section.
“So where do we start?” Yui asked, looking around at all the furniture.
“Well, lets start with the basics. What do you want aside from a bed and dresser?” He asks, looking around.
“Does it matter? Are people really going to be in there that much?” She asks, confused.
“At Koenma's? Most likely. If its not he guys bothering you, you'll probably be hanging out with the girls. You haven't met them yet.” Kurama says, browsing through some couches.
Yui was no longer paying attention. She was staring unblinkingly down an aisle. She walked slowly toward her destination, and Kurama followed looking puzzled at first. Then he started laughing as he saw where Yui was going. She was headed right toward the electronic department.
The wide screen TV section.
“I want it.” She said immediately. Kurama continued laughing. Yui spotted the videogame systems and walked over to an x-box360. “That too.” And for the next half hour she made her way around, picking out random things and saying she wanted them. She used Koenma's credit cards to pay for them all. They then moved on to the clothing area. Yui was completely lost in this department.
“Hmm… you should probably get some things to try on before you buy anything so you can figure out your sizes and stuff.” He said as Yui looked blankly around. Yui walked straight into the men's section and began ruffling through jeans and hoodies.
“Yui? You know that's the men's section, right?” He asked.
“Of course I do.” She said impassively. “You honestly think I'm going over there??” She asked, pointing to the women's section, which was full of dresses, skirts, and bright pink things.
“Well..”
“You're insane.” She said simply. “I don't wear skirts and dresses and such. Too hard to fight in.” She said, as if that explained everything. Kurama chuckled to himself as she picked out more clothes. Finally they paid for the clothes and moved on to the arts section. Yui had decided instead of buying pictures that were overpriced she would simply paint her own designs on her walls. They picked out buckets of every imaginable color except pink and paid for them.
“That should get me through a while.” She said, surveying the back of the U-Hall they were borrowing to get all the stuff to her old apartment. Kurama nodded and now the only question was how they were getting to her apartment. There was only room for one person in front with the truck driver. Yui answered it by hopping onto a pile of clothes.
“You take front.” She said to Kurama. She leaned back and closed her eyes, leaving no room for argument. Kurama nodded slightly and walked to the front of the truck and got in.
In no time they had arrived at Yui's and unloaded the truck. After they paid the driver and he left they opened a portal and made Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Hiei come help with her stuff. Hiei made the comment that he shouldn't have to help because she was `too much of a weak baka'. That pissed her off enough to make her smack him upside the head. She carried most of the things on her first trip just to prove him wrong and it made Kurama laugh out loud. She arranged her room the way she wanted it and laid out the paints for tomorrow, as shopping has taken almost all day. She laid down without dinner and fell asleep almost instantly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Time Lapse - 5 hours~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yui woke up tangled in her blankets, sweating cold sweat. She gasped as though she had just run miles. Her dreams had been haunted by faceless, shapeless shadows with glowing red eyes. She took a deep steadying breath as she slipped out from under her cover and into her bathroom. She splashed some cold water on her face and looked at herself in the mirror. She had never known how much she looked like her father before.
The sound of shattered glass met her ears before she had even registered what she had done. She looked at her already bloody hand and to her shattered reflection in the broken mirror. The feeling of unprovoked anger had vanished when she had hit it, but she was unsure why she had done so. A light flickered on in the hallway across her room through the doorway. Yusuke's head appeared there as he slowly walked in.
“Yui? What's going on?” He asked, his voice slurred from sleep.
“…Nothing, just a little accident.” She said, smiling, keeping her injured hand out of view.
“Alright. Try to be quieter.” He mumbled. Yui smiled sheepishly and he disappeared around the corner again. Yui quickly ran cold water over her hand to wash away the blood and glass shards. The first of many thing's she would have to replace.
She bandaged her hand and walked into her room, knowing sleep would elude her she walked over to a bucket of black pain.
“Might as well start, I know I won't get back to sleep.” She mumbled, opening the can.
Kurama poked his head into Yui's room to see her sprawled across her bed, covered from head to foot in paint. Her dark hair was splattered with paint and in a chaotic mess on her head. He noticed the bandage on her hand, but before he asked he noticed how tired she looked and resolved to ask about it later. He quietly turned off the light and let her sleep.
He walked downstairs into the kitchen.
“Good morning Yusuke.” He greeted, checking the clock. It was eight o clock and so he began fixing breakfast.
“Morning. Yui okay?” Yusuke asked.
“Why wouldn't she be?” Kurama asked, pulling out pancake mix.
“Well last night I heard a shattering sound and Yui was up, in her bathroom. When I asked if everything was okay she looked a little startled and said there had been an `accident'.” He replied, getting himself some coffee.
“Oh. That must be why her hand is bandaged. I'll ask her about it later.” Kurama replied. Not long after Hiei came in, already wearing his training outfit. He grabbed an apple and walked through the back door without a word. Out the window Kurama saw him begin to practice with his katana.
About an hour later Yui came down, looking cleaner than when Kurama had checked in on her. She wore camouflage pants again and a Hawthorne Heights t-shirt.
“Morning Yui.” Yusuke said as he came back down from his shower. Kurama looked up and smiled at Yui over his book.
“What's up?” She asked.
“What happened to your hand?” Kurama asked, looking once more at the bandage.
“Oh, had a little accident. Nothing to worry about.” She said passively, though he couldn't help detect a hint of distress in her own voice. She walked into the living room and got herself some breakfast. She ate it quietly while staring into oblivion. She was still uncertain why she had hit the mirror, or why her dream had been so… vivid.
Kurama's voice pulled her from her thoughts, “Yui, are you sure you are okay?”
“Oh, yah. It's nothing really.” She smiled convincingly. “Anything to do around here?” She asked, already bored.
“Well… you could train with us, or you could go swimming, there's a lovely lake not to far off, behind the training field. Oh, and you'll have to meet Kayko, Yukina and Botan. And you could finish painting your room-”
Yui was sweat dropping, “You know, I think I'll finish painting my room.” She said, smiling.
“Okay. Have fun.' Kurama said, returning his gaze to a book he was reading. Yui walked upstairs again and into her room. She looked around, she had gotten the base coat on the walls last night, she needed to go over it again, then she could start painting the rest. She walked over to her new stereo and put in her Hawthorne Heights CD. As `Life On Standby' began she quickly set to work.
Outside her huge window on the limb of a maple tree sat a certain fire demon, watching curiously as she danced around to the music and painted at the same time, getting more pain on herself than the walls. Her long black hair was tied up in a messy knot on her head and she had unzipped her pants into shorts. She had dropped her sweat shirt on the way in and was wearing only a tank-top.
As much as he wanted to look away he found he couldn't. He was so caught up in watching her peculiar behavior he didn't notice his two silent companions settle beside him.
The squirrel silently hopped onto his shoulder and watched Yui, twitching its nose a bit. Hiei nearly jumped out of the tree when this happened, for he hadn't been paying attention enough to notice the squirrel. This brought his attention to the fox demon whom was silently chuckling.
“Hn. What do you want fox?” Hiei asked, turning away from the window in contempt.
“Nothing. I just happened to notice you sitting up here and when I called your name you didn't answer.” Kurama answered honestly. “Anything bothering you?” He asked.
“Hn. No.” Hiei glared.
Kurama looked back at Yui who was, unsurprisingly, oblivious to it all. “She's quite strange isn't she?” He asked.
“Hn. What does it matter to me? I don't care about her or her stupid ways of doing things.” Hiei said indifferently. Kurama just smiled lightly, not pressing the matter.
Yui stopped suddenly and looked to the window. She turned down her music a bit and opened the window.
“Hey guys. What's up?” She asked, apparently not caring that they had seen her dancing. “Hey, you found my squirrel.” She said, holding out her arm. The squirrel ran up it and perched on her hair. It looked much like a birds nest, now splattered with multicolor paint splotches.
“Yes, he gave Hiei quite a startle.” Kurama said. Yui raised an eyebrow in question but shook it off quickly. “It's nice out.” She opened the window the rest of the way. She then walked over to the balcony and opened the sliding glass door. She winced a bit when she forgot about her bad hand but opened it none the less.
“Just a guess, but is this music Hawthorne Heights?” Kurama asks.
“Yah. How'd you know?” Yui asked.
“Well you seem to have a lot of Hawthorne Heights things, so I figured it might be.” He smiled. Suddenly they heard Yusuke's shout of joy and all turned simultaneously to look down. Yusuke was standing there with four other men.
“What the…” Yui started, Kurama interrupted her.
“Jin, Touya, Chuu, and Rinku.” He said before she finished her question.
“Oh well that explains it all.” Yui said sarcastically.
Kurama laughed, “They were in the Dark Tournament.” Yui just quirked an eyebrow, but shook it off before Kurama explained more. “Come on down and meet them. They're really nice.” Yui nodded and walked out of her room without another word. She walked downstairs and out the door to see the guys up close. There was a red headed demon with a horn and blue eyes, a tall demon with a purple Mohawk, a shorter demon with blue hair and green bangs, and a kid with a bunch of yoyos.
“Hey Yui.” Yusuke greeted. “Meet Jin, Chuu, Touya, and Rinku.” He said, pointing to each of them as he said their names. “Guys, meet Yui.”
“Wow, you're short.” Rinku says out of the blue.
“Gee thanks.” Yui says sarcastically. “Keen powers of observation… not.” Yusuke, just to be an ass, rests his arm on her head and leans on it.
“You make a good arm rest.” He says, laughing. Before he knows what hit him He is on the ground with the imprint of the bottom of your show in his stomach.
