Someone Else's Star

Kari sat on her balcony gazing at the stars. A night for lovers, if she had one.

"Alone again tonight
Without someone to love
The stars are shining bright
So one more wish goes up

And I wish I with all my might
For the love I'm dreaming of
And missing in my life."

Two years had passed since their return from the digiworld, and everyone was pairing off. TK with Mimi, Tai with Sora, Matt with Miyako, and Joe with Izzy. Of all the couple's she envied them the most, because they had what she truly wanted.

Their heart's desire.

She went inside and dialed the phone. "Hello, is Izzy there?"

"Oh hi Kari." Joe said. "Izzy's in the kitchen making dinner since his parent's are out."

"I know you guys probably want to be alone, but do you mind if come over? I need to talk to someone."

"Let me talk to Izzy." Joe said.

A moment later Izzy himself picked up the phone. "Kari, it's me. Come on over. We've got plenty of food and I think your problem might be best discussed over a warm meal."

"I don't -"

"See ya soon."

She went inside to get a jacket and then set off to Izzy's apartment.

"You'd think that I could find
A true love of my own
It happens all the time
To people that I know
Their wishes all come true
So I've got to believe
There's still someone out there who
Is meant for only me."

She said walking down the street.

Meanwhile, Sora twisted the key in the lock of her mother's flower shop. Being here always made her feel better but tonight it didn't seem to help. She looked at the single red rose and thought of giving it to Tai.

You know that's not who you wanted it for.

She smiled sadly at her inner voice and set off down the street. But how could she be in love with...

She shook away the thought and headed to Tai's apartment.

"Hi Kari." Joe said opening the door. "Do you mind if we eat on the balcony?"

"Not at all." She said taking off her shoes.

"Ah Kari!" Izzy came up to her and pecked her on each cheek. "What brings you to us?"

"Romance." She said as they lead the way to the balcony.

"Sick of Tai and Sora making out all over the place?" Joe said sitting down.

"Not quite." She replied staring at the stars.

"I guess I must be wishin'
On someone else's star
It seems like someone else
Keeps gettin' what I'm wishin' for
Why can't I be as lucky
As those other people are

"Ah. A love lost." Joe said. "Who is it, TK?"

"No, Joe." Izzy said pushing Joe's glasses back up his nose. "If she wanted advice on a straight relationship she could have gone to anyone, but she came to us. Are in love with another girl Kari?"

"Yes." She stood at the railing and watched the couples go by on the street below.

"I sit here in the dark
And stare up at the sky
But I can't give my heart
One good reason why
Everywhere I look
It's lovers that I see
Seems like everyone's in love
With everyone but me. "

She said.

"Sora or Miyako?" Joe asked.

"Sora." Kari confessed blushing. "Every time I'm around her I get this warm fuzzy feeling. But she's in love with my brother."

"You won't know if she feels the same way, unless you ask her." Izzy said.

"You and Sora have always been close, I mean she's known you since before you were born. Tai told me that she was the one who picked out your name."

"What Joe's trying to say in his own roundabout way, is that you and Sora have always loved each other. The feeling doesn't change, only the quantity."

"Thanks you guys. I love you."

"Right back at ya kid." Joe said playfully punching her in the arm.

"We wish you only the best." Izzy said. Now go for it.

Kari walked up to up the door and was about to fit her key in the door when something on the welcome mat caught her eye.

A long stemmed red rose.

Kari opened the door and stepped inside. "Hiya Kar'." Tai said airily. "Sora was asking about you."

"Sorry I missed her." Kari said looking at the card.

"What's that?"

"I have a secret admirer." She said reading the card.

Kari-chan
Dai suki, chibi puro kokoro.
