---- Chapter 79: Underworld Dreams - Part One : The Never-ending Nightmare ----

There was a soft moan. Down within the dark recesses of the world, Cindy awoke upon stiff
stone floor, her bones aching. When she opened her eyes and looked around, she gasped when
she saw all around.

She had awoken in the middle of a grand city, built from stone and marble. The buildings
rose tall, sweeping arcs passed over the city, and many works of great architecture lay
abundant. Upon every corner, Cindy saw very thin pillars rise up from the ground, going up
into the sky. She got to her feet and looked up, and then she was completely taken aback.

She saw the gigantic space above her, yet no ceiling or sky was in sight. The thin pillars
stretched up into the black space above. The light only came from floating spheres upon
every intersection of every sidewalk.

She looked left and right. She was alone in the abandoned city, and her head ached from
trying to remember how she got there. She recalled SSJ and her trip to the dining hall,
where Kino came... Kensou was gone... Then there was, Jallopsimon- No, Van. Then she
remembered Nataku. It all became clear. Momo's betrayal, Nataku's attack, and the arrow
tearing through SSJ's shoulder. Nataku had apparently knocked her out as he took her away.

She rubbed her head, trying to make the pain disappear. She stepped forward, looking for a
safe haven. She felt eyes following her. She suddenly turned left and right. No one was
there. But she still felt suspicious. She dashed forward, under a giant arch and through
the buildings. The eyes followed her, and she dashed all the more faster. She dashed
forward, through the alleys, between the buildings, and towards a sweeping arch...

A sweeping arch?! She skidded to a stop and looked up. It was the same arch she had passed
under when she began running just twenty minutes past. "No way!" she exclaimed. "That..."

"There's no point running," said a voice. Cindy turned white, looking over her shoulder.
She heard footsteps come up behind her. From the shadows came the gray-haired, red eyed
Seiryuu of the Nishiten. Cindy turned and faced him directly, feeling a sense of dread come
to her. She reached for her pistol, and she realized it was gone.

The belt of her many weapons had been taken away. Not only that, but her bishie balls had
been confiscated as well. Her bishounen were far away from her. She couldn't even feel
them. She gritted her teeth and looked forward.

Seiryuu continued, "We are over six-thousand kilometers underground. This is the core of
Terra, which has a radius of one kilometer." Cindy gasped. She could hardly believe that
fact. But not only that, she realized that the core wasn't as hot as she expected...

"Yes, this planet is hollow," Seiryuu explained, as if reading her mind. "We are in the
perfect fortress. No one can come, and no one can leave, unless that person can traverse
six-thousand miles vertically." Seiryuu smiled widely.

Cindy shook in fear, realizing what he said was true. She just demanded, "Who are you?!"

Seiryuu was suddenly close to her, holding her chin in his hand. Cindy was taken aback as
he put his face close to hers. "I am Seiryuu of the Nishiten," he introduced. "We have
taken you to our abode." Seiryuu pressed forward. Cindy realized what was happening.

She pulled away just as their lips were about to make contact. "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!"
she screamed, leaping away from him. Seiryuu smiled. "YOU'RE NOT MAKING ANY PASSES AT ME,
GOT IT?"

Seiryuu simply bowed before me. "My apologies," he stated. "I am to protect you until the
time comes." Cindy edged back, feeling nothing but suspicion. "You are right to
misunderstand us. I must say point blank that we have nothing else on our agenda but
obliterating Terra. You will be our pawn."

Cindy's face twisted in anger. She threw a punch at Seiryuu, who flew back in slight
surprise. He skidded along the ground and flipped onto his feet a distance away. Cindy
screamed at him, "I WILL BE NO ONE'S PAWN! No matter what you say, I will not join you!"

Seiryuu smiled, getting to his feet. "I liked your youthful optimism," he stated, suddenly
right next to her again. He put a hand on her head and leaned down to look at her eye to
eye. "We have lost that long ago, long before we joined Virus. We are those who were thrown
away by Terra. Just like Terra threw us away, we threw it away. We have lost everything,
and now can only serve Virus. You, too, will have no choice in this matter. It has already
been decided by fate."

With that, Seiryuu let go of her head, and Cindy rubbed it. His grip was surprisingly
powerful, yet stiff, for some reason... She stood there, alone, within the almost abandoned
city. She looked up towards the black sky above. She hoped her friends would come.

***

Kensou stood before his master's cabin again, feeling a great weight in his heart. The
building didn't changed since his last visit, but he felt that he was missing something
altogether. He circled the building from the outside, searching for any clues. None.

He shoved open the door and stepped inside, seeing everything standing as it had when he
last left it. Everything was still neatly packed away, but the footprints he made in the
dust on the floor had slightly faded, though they were still pronounced. He noticed how
cramped the building was, especially after he saw it from the outside.

Kensou came to a realization. He stepped to the wall full of the scratches of the kanji
"Sushin". He pulled back his leg, and then he sent a powerful kick straight at it. The wall
tore apart upon impact, and he saw that behind the wall was open space. It was dark,
meaning that he was still inside.

He stepped through the broken wall, squeezed between the fake wall and the outer wall, and
then he found a steep stairway before him. He was taken aback. That entire staircase was
kept a secret from him.

Kensou slowly stepped down a flight of stairs, made of poorly carved stone. The walls were
filled with scratches and dried blood, making him wonder what had happened. He carefully
picked his way down, finding that the stairs were unusually hard. The stone it was carved
from was much too strong considering the area.

His master had help in making this. Kensou figured who. "Sushin," he muttered under his
breath. "What did they do to master?" As he descended, he noticed the area becoming darker.
The deeper he went, the less the sunlight could reach.

He reached the bottom of the pit, which surprised him, for he couldn't see around him. He
couldn't rely on his sense of touch alone. From his pocket, he pulled out a lighter, and he
ignited it. Light filled the area, and he was absolutely taken aback. All around, he saw
maps, diagrams, sketches, and all sorts of drawings on paper. Each was drawn with great
detail, and many government buildings were circled on the maps.

Kensou noticed something scribbled upon the corner of the largest map. He read, "Suzaku...
Seiryuu... Byakko... Genbu... Nataku... And Gouki..." Kensou remembered the names. He
muttered, "They... They're the Nishiten." He realized what had happened. His master had
been following the Sushin: Suzaku, Seiryuu, Byakko, and Genbu.

Kensou grit his teeth. His master was working against him. His master had broken his own
teachings. Everything his master had taught him was a lie. Kensou felt nothing but anger in
his heart.

He saw a weapon in the corner of the room. A nidachi. The one his master had used. Kensou
tore a paper from the wall and crumpled it to a ball in the middle of the room. He lit it
on fire with his lighter, which he hid away. He stepped to the nidachi and picked it up.

Unsheathing each blade, he saw the perfectly crafted blades. They were folded steel of
perfect quality. His own nidachi was made not by skill, but by alchemy. It couldn't compare
to the finely crafted blade of his master's weapon. Kensou sheathed the blades and held the
weapon in his left hand.

With the other, he pulled out his lighter and lit it again. He lit one of the maps on the
wall and stepped away silently. He let the flames spread, moving from paper to paper, and
throwing smoke into the air. The still air moved again as the flames continued.

Kensou climbed his away up the stairs and into the shack. He pulled the giant bottle of his
master's liquor from its hiding spot in the corner. He pulled off the lid and kicked the
large bottle onto the floor, letting the liquid spill all over the floor. And he dropped
his lighter into the alcohol.

As he stepped away from the shack, he let the flames swallow it up, engulfing everything in
flames. He never looked back as he stepped away. From then, a determined shine stayed in
his eyes. He was sure to reach his master and demand a reason. His master had betrayed him.
He had betrayed everyone.

He heard the pillars of the building collapse and everything fall apart. He felt the heat
from where he was, walking away. He didn't look back then. He would never look back again.

***

The wind was still. It suddenly moved as the sound of flapping wings beat into the air. A
chorus of wings beating in the air filled the area, pitch black all around. Davis lay prone
upon the ground, unconscious and still. He began to move.

In that dark place, he opened his eyes. He lay still there as he got up to speed. And then
he remembered what had happened. Jallopsimon had killed him, no doubt. He remembered the
pain of Jallopsimon's kodachi biting through his body. He felt his chest. Not a cut.

He couldn't see far in any direction. He could hardly even see himself. He looked left and
right, but he couldn't see a bit.

Suddenly, there was a bright light. It came from below him, intense and purely white. It
cut through the darkness, forcing Davis to shield his eyes. Davis' surprisingly undamaged
green shirt stood out in the brightness, and his black pants rustled as a wind came. From
his brown boots, the darkness upon the ground broke apart, splitting into feathers and
flying up.

Davis saw buildings appear from the darkness. All around him, he saw the many dark forms
become tangible. The bright light had faded, showing instead the ground leveled with
bricks. A bright Rood Inverse glowed upon the ground where Davis appeared.

He looked around, seeing the new world. It was a very strange world. The surroundings were
bright and distinct, yet the sky was pitch black. The forms of people became clear all
around the place. Weary faces, young faces, strong bodies, weak ones- they all were mixed
among the people.

It was a completely different world that Davis ended up within. He heard footsteps as
someone approached him. "Welcome, Davis," said a feminine voice. He turned and saw a girl
wearing a pink kimono. Her blue hair was particularly interesting looking, and her pink
eyes were rather strange.

Davis began with suspicion, "Who are you?"

The girl smiled. "I am Botan, the Grim Reaper in your world." She stepped up to Davis and
offered a hand. Davis looked at it wearily before he finally shook it.

When their hands parted, Davis asked, "Where is this place?" He looked around, seeing the
buildings of very peculiar shapes.

"This is the Underworld," said Botan. Davis turned to her with surprise. "This is the one
place every one ends up once he dies."

Botan stepped out of the Rood. Davis followed. He looked amongst the people, seeing the
various faces. He saw one particularly proud-looking man, but saw that the man had been
humbled somehow. The beautiful were silenced and the ugly spoke loudly. Davis asked, "If
everyone ends up here, what is that about judgment or the chosen? Surely, the good can't go
to the same place as the bad."

Botan smiled again. She turned back to face Davis, just before a gigantic, majestic tower.
She spoke, "There is no divine judgment. There has never been any judgment. No matter what
you do in life, you will end up here. Why would we have such a tedious job of sorting
through all the people?"

"So then, what stops the bad from oppressing the good here?"

Botan's smile was immediately erased. Davis noted it curiously. She turned away and said,
"I don't want to describe what happens. You will see soon enough. There are always those
who doubt that everyone is equal here."

There was a piercing beat of wings again. Davis noted it coming from the sky. Botan looked
up as well. "You're about to see what happens," said Botan.

Davis saw Botan pull her oar from nowhere and sit upon it. She motioned Davis to sit upon
it as well. Davis complied, and the two floated up and above the crowds of people. He saw
upon a creaky pedestal, one proud man was yelling to the people. His screams went unheard
by much of the crowd, who quickly moved away in fear. Davis noticed their reactions.

There was the beat of wings again. The man was silenced, and he turned to the black sky.
All of a sudden, a large figure swooped down from the sky. Davis nearly fell off the oar in
surprise. He saw its many wings, its clawed, muscular arms, and equally powerful-looking
legs. Its body was thin and sleek, and upon the shoulders was a demonic head.

It swooped down and caught the man in its mouth. There was no blood anywhere. After all, no
one had their bodies. The man screamed and was taken into the black sky. His screams were
drowned out by the furious beats of wings and the sound of something ripping apart.

Davis looked up in fear. There was an uncomfortable silence. Botan finally spoke, "That's
what happens to the proud. Unless they learn, they are taken away by the daemons. In here,
humans are below all. People like you must know their place. The daemons are there to show
them that place."

Botan steered the oar back to the majestic building. They came down low, and Davis leapt
off. Botan landed as well, and she faced Davis. "We shall meet with Koenma now. We know
about your travels, and we would like to employ you."

Davis was silent for a bit as Botan made her way into the building. "...Employ?" he finally
asked. Botan nodded.

She stepped forward, pushing open the doors of the tower. They made their way through the
empty hallway at the bottom of the building. At the end of the hall was a single elevator,
and Botan pressed the button as she got there. With a ping, the doors opened, and the two
entered.

The elevator had a glass pane as its back, and Davis saw the many buildings outside shrink.
He wondered about his friends, if they knew that he was just fine, though not quite alive.
He had felt it within him for a while. Everything was light. He had no weight. Of course,
he had no body. The form he had was just the shape his soul remembered.

He looked upon his hand, seeing the Dark Trinity Gloves were not there. Of course, it was
left behind with his body. Davis swore under his breath. Then there was another ping.

The doors slid open, and as Davis and Botan stepped out, many people squeezed in. They saw
the elevator doors close and leave the two at the top of the building. Botan and Davis
turned to face the desk before them. There was a little boy sitting in the large chair,
sucking on a pacifier. It was Koenma. "Hello, Koenma!" Botan said enthusiastically.

Koenma looked up from his papers, which were strewn across his desk. It certainly was a
mess, but the boy didn't seem to mind. "Oh, Botan!" he replied. He then noticed Davis. "You
have brought him!" Botan nodded with a smile.

Davis and Koenma exchanged glances. Koenma nodded in approval. He turned to Botan, "Why not
get some chairs for him?" Botan hastily ran to the side of the room and brought a chair
for Davis, who sat down before Koenma. Botan took her own chair at the side of the room.

Koenma cleared his throat and spoke, "Well, so you are one of the famous Outlaws who faced
Rantmon." Davis nodded. Koenma grinned and held out his hand. "Nice you meet you! I am
Koenma! I run this Underworld when my father is away!" He whispered under his breath,
"Which is most of the time." He then spoke normally, "Well, Davis, let's get down to
business-"

Davis suddenly interrupted, "Wait! How do you know my name?"

Koenma was silent for a bit. He and Botan exchanged glances. "The name tag," Koenma said
simply. It was then that Davis noticed the sticker on his shirt which read, "Hello! My name
is Davis!" Davis sweatdropped.

Koenma continued, "We have heard of your travels, and I have a proposition for you."

Davis nodded. "Tell me," he told the boy.

"You know of Virus, do you not? Mauzel or Frank mentioned it to you at least once, so you
must know." Davis nodded. "Well, its core- or rather, it's soul and ethereal self- resides
within the Underworld," told Koenma. "It took over one part of the Underworld long ago, and
we can not do anything about it. Only a person with a body can do anything against it, and
unfortunately, we could not handle it."

Davis nodded, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Then, a thought came to mind. Davis asked,
"Haven't you employed other people to try?"

"Yes," said Koenma simply. "Unfortunately, they hardly have enough of an aura to stop
Virus' attacks. The latest person we offered was a man named Takegawa Akito. He refused,
and he was one of the strongest people ever to have lived. You know him, don't you? The one
known as 'Atma'."

That name struck Davis. Davis shook his head. "I don't know Atma, but I have heard that
name," said Davis. "Wasn't it a weapon to be used by Rantmon?"

"That sword is named after this Atma," Koenma replied. "You can ask him for the full
details, but right now, let's return to the topic. Virus made a home within the Underworld,
and not even the daemons have a chance against it. All around is a graveyard of downed
daemons and lost weapons.

"In any case, I offer this: if you want to try your luck, we would be more than happy to
restore your body and weapons. Help us- no, help the world. We need to defeat Virus,
especially after its last attempt in Rantmon's body," Koenma finally finished.

Davis was silent. He looked out the window, seeing the people below. They were carrying on
just fine within the Underworld. They were carrying on as if they were still alive. Davis
recalled his friends. They were in the Overworld, or at least he hoped they still were. He
then realized what he needed to know. He turned to Koenma. "Before that, can you tell me
what happened in the Rantmon fight? Did we win?"

Koenma looked at him in surprise. But then he grinned and answered, "We won, alright! Your
friends did real well in there, but that Atma guy dealt the final blow."

Davis looked at Koenma in surprise. "Atma..." He was silent for a bit, thinking of
everything that had happened. Of their journey, the preparation for battle, the many
enemies, and of the world. Davis looked up at Koenma. "I accept. I will definitely defeat
Virus."

Koenma and Botan smiled widely. "Thank you!" Koenma practically yelled. "Hopefully, we will
finally free the Underworld from Virus!"

But then Davis continued, "If I do this, will I be able to return?"

Koenma and Botan were silent again. They exchanged glances. Botan then spoke thoughtfully,
"Well, since you'd have a body, I guess you'd have no place here. So then... Yes, I think
you'd have to return."

Davis smiled. "That's all I needed to know."

With that, Davis got to his feet. Botan and Koenma stood up with him, and they placed their
hands upon his shoulders. Davis suddenly felt a weight come upon him. He felt heavier and
heavier, and then he was back to his normal weight. He felt the Dark Trinity gloves appear
in his hands. When the two pulled their hands back, Davis felt his body. It really existed.

Davis then turned to Koenma and Botan. "I definitely won't let you down!" he said proudly.
Koenma and Botan wished for their dreams to come true then.

***

Davis and Botan stepped away from the majestic tower. They stepped through the crowds of
souls throughout the Underworld. The many souls noticed the fact that Davis had a body.
They were taken aback at that realization. The last time someone challenged Virus was
almost ages ago.

But Davis and Botan didn't make their way to Virus yet. Botan led Davis towards another
building. It was large- larger than the surrounding buildings, but a bunch of voices came
from within the building, signaling a large amount of people living there. Botan knocked
upon the door.

The door quickly shot open, and a beautiful girl stood in the doorway. She noted the
spirit. "Botan! It has been a while, hasn't it?" she asked cheerfully.

Botan smiled back. "Yes, it's been a long time, Misato. But unfortunately, I am not here
for a friendly visit. I have a boy here who wants to speak with Akito."

Misato looked at Botan with surprise. "Akito?! Come on, Botan, since when did you allow
Akito to take visitors?"

"This boy is different. He needs Akito's advice, especially since Akito defeated Rantmon.
You see, this is Davis, one of the Outlaws who fought against Rantmon." Botan stepped out
of the way, and Davis sheepishly waved at Misato.

Misato's jaw nearly dropped to the floor. She just stared at Botan and Davis for a long
time. Finally she screamed, "EVERYONE! IT'S ONE OF THE OUTLAWS! COME QUICK!"

There was a gigantic commotion, everyone racing down to crowd the doorway. A young boy
looked at Davis and muttered, "Oh, amazing!"

A man saw the boy and said approvingly, "It is so!" The man turned to Misato, "What does he
want?"

"He wants to see Akito, Gen," replied Misato. Everyone was silent then. Nevertheless, they
opened a path for Davis and Botan to enter. Davis saw the large group of family and friends
staring at him, and didn't feel comfortable there. Botan led him up a flight of stairs
opposite the door and away from the crowd, and that pleased him ever so slightly.

Botan stopped before a door in the second-story hall and tapped on it lightly. "Come in," a
voice called.

Botan opened it and announced, "Akito, I've come with a guest."

"You need not say that," said the man opposite the door, Atma, better known there as Akito.
"I felt him coming for a long time."

Botan was silenced then. Davis stepped up and said, "Hello."

Atma turned and smiled. "Hello," he replied. "Is it entirely out of my domain to guess that
you want to know a bit about Virus?" Davis shook his head. Atma turned to face Davis,
kneeling upon the floor as he did so. The two faced each other. Once again, Atma told his
tale.
