Amiko: Davis is given the keys to the Ether Gate, and Frank explains his plans.

Kensou: He then faces Byakko, the Tiger of the Nishiten.

TM: Byakko then goes into a long rant about his past.

Davis: And I still kick his ass.

Van: So! On with the show!

---- Chapter 89: Closing the Gate - Part Seven : The Windows to the Soul ----

Rewind a few minutes, when Davis met Byakko. During that time, SSJ leapt from bridge to
bridge, supporting Momo as she clutched his back. He landed upon one bridge and searched
around for another. He found one and leapt down to it, landing with precision. He leapt
again towards the darkness, thinking to himself about what was happening.

He suddenly felt the winds completely change. From the blackness came a shuriken. Quickly,
Momo held on tighter as SSJ let go of her. He reached for his blade and drew it in an
instant, knocking the shuriken away. SSJ's feet glowed white as he skidded down a pillar,
finally coming to a stop using his energy.

In the darkness below, SSJ barely distinguished the shape of someone in a cloak, catching a
giant shuriken. "Nataku of the Nishiten," muttered SSJ.

Momo stared down painfully at him. "Brother," she uttered.

SSJ kicked off the pillar and leapt across the giant void. He sped down due to gravity,
sheathing his blade and supporting Momo as he landed with a boom. SSJ let Momo off and
turned to glare at Nataku. "This grudge has gone on long enough," SSJ said simply. "Give
up, Nishiten."

Nataku glared back at SSJ, one of his eyes clear in the darkness of his cloak. "As long as
you live, I will not give up," Nataku snarled back. "You're not one to touch my dear
sister." Nataku pulled back his shuriken, ready to throw it. "It's because of you that her
life was ruined."

SSJ said nothing. He stood before Nataku, waiting for the man to throw the shuriken. "Yes,
it's my fault that you two's father was executed," SSJ said after a deep silence. "It is my
fault she suffered. But, I have already faced that fact. I am past that now, and I am
focused on my mission. One of my dear friends has been kidnapped by you. I will get down
there and take her back. This grudge has gone on long enough. Get out of my way."

Nataku glared at SSJ. SSJ saw the man turn away, and the hood somewhat shifted from behind.
When Nataku turned back, SSJ was greeted by Cindy's face. "Is it my fault you were too weak
to protect her then?" came Cindy's voice. "You should give up. If you were too weak to
protect me then, how can you defeat Virus?" SSJ shook with anger as Nataku's face twisted
back to normal.

SSJ reached for the hilt of his blade. "Your ability pisses me off!" screamed SSJ as he
suddenly was above Nataku. Nataku looked up in surprise. "You have no right to use Cindy's
face!" Momo screamed after SSJ. SSJ gave a shrill cry as he slashed down upon Nataku.

With a clang, Momo saw that Nataku had blocked SSJ's blade with his shuriken. SSJ was taken
aback to see the simple metal shuriken block the brilliantly crafted Atma. SSJ grit his
teeth as he was shoved back by Nataku's strength. SSJ, sword drawn, tensed his muscles. "No
matter if your sword is the Atma," he heard Nataku speak, "These shuriken are filled with
my hatred. They can not be destroyed."

SSJ simply turned back towards Momo. "Stand back," he told her.

Momo looked at SSJ. She shook her head and replied, "No, this is my fight, too. At least
let me watch."

SSJ looked at her in surprise. Still, he turned back to Nataku, who raised his shuriken.
"You won't see much, anyway," said SSJ. Quickly, SSJ sheathed his sword. Nataku was taken
aback.

SSJ put his hands together and yelled, "Kage Mane no Jutsu!" ("Shadow Copy Skill!") Nataku
saw the shadow shoot forward from SSJ. Nataku was quick to leap off the bridge. His shadow
disappeared from the bridge, and SSJ pulled his hands apart in frustration. SSJ barely
glimpsed Nataku throwing his shuriken from the corner of his eye.

He quickly drew his blade and knocked it away using battoujutsu. Then, to his surprise, he
saw a second shuriken emerge from the blind spot made by the first shuriken. SSJ was taken
aback and barely crouched to dodge it. The shuriken barely grazed his cheek, causing blood
to flow down SSJ's face.

Momo held her breath, seeing the fight between the two people she loved. Nataku twisted
through the air and landed upon the pillar across from SSJ. She was astonished to see him
stand on the side of the pillar, catching his two shuriken.

SSJ simply wiped the blood from his cheek and glared at Nataku. "Nice trick," commented SSJ
as he held his blade tightly. "Did Virus teach you it?"

Nataku glared back. "This is my mastery," Nataku snapped back. "I have lived on my own for
seven years, and during then I have mastered the art of the shuriken."

Momo felt the pang in her heart as she recalled how he left. The memories of how she found
him, fully dressed, at 4:13 in the morning. Every little detail of that day was burned into
her memory, when all he said was, "Bye," and left. There were tears running down her cheeks
before she knew it.

SSJ saw her tears, but he turned back to Nataku. "It seems I wasn't the only one who had
hurt her," SSJ muttered.

Nataku looked up at his sister. He saw her tears. He suddenly fumed with anger. "Don't
compare me to you, trash!" Nataku spat as he flung his shuriken at SSJ. SSJ roared as he
ducked and dodged the two, kicking off the bridge and flying at Nataku.

Nataku saw SSJ's immense speed, and he barely let go of the pillar in time for SSJ to only
make a nick in the celesium. The shurikens flew back towards Nataku, who caught them and
placed them on his back again. He caught the pillar and held on. SSJ, standing on the
pillar due to his chakra, saw the small spikes of metal cutting through the celesium.

"Tch," muttered SSJ. "He's just a damn machine." SSJ dashed down the pillar, quickly
turning his blade in his hand. As he neared Nataku, he screamed, "RYUU MEI SEN!" as he
moved to sheath his blade at lightning speed. Nataku, though, moved his hand at a faster
speed and caught the blade before it was near the sheathe. SSJ was taken aback.

"I've done my homework," Nataku simply said. Nataku pulled the Atma away from SSJ. SSJ held
onto it tightly, and he was surprised to see that he was suddenly hanging on his blade over
the black abyss below. Nataku held onto SSJ's blade with an unforgiving grip. "I know that
the attack is by sound. Just try and sheathe it now."

SSJ grit his teeth again. He shifted his weight and swung up, taking Nataku by surprise by
landing a kick to the man's stomach. Nataku let go of the blade in anger, and Momo screamed
as SSJ tumbled towards the ground.

SSJ grabbed the tip of the scarf coming from the hilt of the Atma. He swung the blade at
the pillar with enough force to cut into the celesium. Quickly, his aura burst out. "Shadow
Dance!" he yelled as he suddenly disappeared into the shadow of his sword. Momo and Nataku
were bewildered to see SSJ gone.

The scarf of the Atma fell and became still. Everything was silent for a second. Momo saw
SSJ suddenly jump out from the shadow on Nataku's back. SSJ flipped in the air and drop
kicked the back of Nataku's head. Nataku lost his hold on the pillar and began falling
towards the darkness.

SSJ slid down the pillar towards his Atma, sticking onto the wall with his chakra again. He
took out his Atma and sheathed it, watching Nataku fall. SSJ saw Nataku swing his shuriken
at the pillar, cutting into it to stop his descent. Nataku flipped and stood again upon the
pillar, glaring at SSJ.

Nataku saw SSJ's aura, a shade of pale crimson. SSJ muttered, "Time to show one of my new
tricks." Nataku saw SSJ's aura burst everywhere, filling the area with its vermillion glow.
"Solar Flare!" SSJ yelled as he put his hands together. Suddenly, a part of his aura
stretched and shot out at Nataku in a curved arc.

Nataku was surprised to see the arc reach him and burn his bandana before turning and
returning to SSJ's aura. The bandana tore and fell from his head, falling towards the
darkness. Nataku looked at SSJ in pure surprise.

SSJ said nothing else as many more flares came from SSJ's aura, aiming straight at Nataku.
Nataku dodged, ducking and sidestepping out of the paths of the arcs. He failed to notice
that SSJ was suddenly behind him. "Mega Flare," said SSJ as he held his palm at Nataku's
back.

White light came from SSJ's hand, striking Nataku in the back with immense force. Nataku
was once again taken aback by SSJ's power. Nataku tumbled upwards until he finally came to
a stop, spiked feet planted upon the wall. He glared down at SSJ. "I underestimated you,"
said Nataku. He realized one of his shuriken was still stuck down below. He sighed.

SSJ saw Nataku throw off his cloak. SSJ was totally aghast to see the throbbing mass that
completely covered Nataku's left shoulder. Momo covered her mouth in horror as she saw the
veins entering her brother. "Time to get serious," SSJ and Momo heard as Nataku tapped the
mass.

From the ooze, several veins came forth and hung in the air. And suddenly, they shot into
Nataku, and SSJ's and Momo's eyes widened in surprise. The ooze spread throughout Nataku's
body, turning his skin completely black. "Damn it," swore SSJ. "You rely on that piece of
shit to win?"

Nataku's red eyes, then, shone clearly in the black. "You think I care?" Nataku replied.
"All I care about is to defeat you and keep my sister safe. You, who are alone, would never
understand this."

SSJ looked up at Nataku in surprise. "Huh?!" he uttered.

Nataku pulled back his shuriken. "Has it ever occurred to you that all you have done is
hurt my sister? From forcing yourself into her life, to making our father die, to bringing
her down here to watch our fight, all you have done is causing her pain. Not surprising,
considering you'd never understand."

SSJ suddenly remembered, then, his family. The family he had loathed. The family he had
left behind. He remembered, too, that he had a little sister at home. He suddenly felt sick
to his stomach. He heard Nataku continue, "Yes. You would never understand how I feel."

"SHUT UP!" SSJ spat back. Nataku was silenced from surprise. SSJ's muscles were tense; his
teeth were ground, and his eyes wide in anger. He shouted, "I know... I know what you
feel!" Nataku glared back at SSJ with narrow eyes. "Has it ever occurred to YOU that I,
too, have a dear little sister?!"

Momo was taken by surprise. Not once has he ever mentioned his family to her. Not once as
he ever spoken about his life before he had come to Terra to her. She realized, then, that
he had kept it close to him, buried in his heart. He had always known that he would return.
He had always known that Terra wasn't his home. Tears started to form in her cheeks.

Nataku glared back at SSJ. "I understand!" yelled SSJ. "But that doesn't change the fact
that this fight is pointless. Who are you to speak for your sister? She is standing right
there, and you haven't spoken to her at all yet." Nataku's eyes widened in a flare of fury.
"Now that I think about it, wasn't it you who abandoned her to live on your own for seven
years? You have hurt her as well!"

Nataku launched himself with immense speed at SSJ. "THAT STILL DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT
YOU HURT THE ONE PERSON I HAVE LEFT!" Nataku screamed vehemently. His arm was a giant blur
as he threw his shuriken at SSJ. SSJ stared at the whirring blur before him, seeing the
shadow of the shuriken on the pillar.

Nataku saw with surprise SSJ's shadow reaching out and striking the shuriken's shadow.
"Shadow Fist," SSJ uttered as the shuriken was suddenly knocked away. Nataku saw it fall
past SSJ, speeding into the darkness.

Nataku grit his teeth. "Yes," SSJ called. "Just pointing out that you have hurt her as well
doesn't change the fact that I did. But I am not using that as an excuse to fight you. I
will go down there and save Cindy, no matter what..." SSJ became silent when he saw Nataku
lift his hand, covered in a glove. SSJ saw that the fingers were shining.

SSJ was then taken aback to see string unravel from Nataku's ten fingers, flying everywhere
and cutting the celesium. Then the strings became still, attached to the tips of Nataku's
fingers. "The Hell?" uttered SSJ, but suddenly, Nataku once again was a blur.

Nataku was just before SSJ, throwing his hand at SSJ. SSJ saw the strings racing at him,
and dodged them just in time. He suddenly saw five different cuts appear in his shirt, as
well as small cuts in the armor underneath. He was thankful of Anya, then, but as he
skidded back, he watched Nataku warily.

Nataku's hands were a blur, then. Wires tore through the celesium easily, and they would
have torn through SSJ had he not been able to dodge them. Nataku moved completely
differently. His movements could barely be followed by SSJ's eyes.

SSJ leapt back as far as he could and put his hands together. "Kage Mane no Jutsu!" yelled
SSJ as his shadow shot at Nataku's. Nataku, though, leapt at SSJ, wires slashing at the boy.

SSJ leapt back, landing upon a bridge down below. Nataku fell after him, swinging the wire.
SSJ saw the wire wrap around the shuriken embedded into the pillar, pulling it out. Nataku
reached and caught the pillar, grinning. SSJ grit his teeth and glared at Nataku.

"FEEL THIS!" screamed Nataku. "TAKE THIS SHURIKEN WITH ALL OF MY HATRED!" In an instant,
the shuriken was flying at SSJ, spinning at an insane speed. SSJ quickly reached for his
blade. He stuck out his left leg. Nataku noticed it.

SSJ began to pivot his foot and turn. With great force, he drew his blade from his sheathe,
shoving the air out of the space before him. But before SSJ could finish his succession
technique, Nataku threw his hand at him again. SSJ couldn't move to dodge as the wires
wrapped all around him, trapping him.

SSJ saw his arms bound to his body, as well as the shuriken racing at him. "Not good!" SSJ
muttered. He focused on the shuriken, ignoring the pain coming from his arms. He moved and
pulled his blade up, and he gave a powerful scream. His aura spread across the area,
brilliant and blue. SSJ flipped the Atma so it was upside-down, and with great force he
slammed it into the shuriken.

To Nataku's utter surprise, the Atma cut into the metal. Cracks appeared all over the
shuriken. Before his very eyes, it shattered into pieces, clinking as it bounced across the
bridge and fell towards the Core. In that instant, he lost concentration. SSJ slipped out
of the wires, arms bleeding in straight lines.

SSJ looked down at the wounds. He began to ask, "What kind of string..." He looked up at
Nataku.

Nataku glared at the boy. "Diamond-edged wire," Nataku said simply. SSJ's eyes shot open,
realizing truly how dangerous the wires were. Wires coated with crushed diamonds, strong
and powerful enough to cut celesium... SSJ stood before Nataku, panting with fatigue.

Still, he got to his feet, holding his blade at Nataku. SSJ pondered what he could do to
defeat Nataku. With the wires and Nataku's speed, he couldn't get close. He was especially
sure of that when the cuts in his arms burned with irritation. He needed to catch him.

SSJ suddenly sparked with an idea, thinking of the flare Kino gave him. SSJ set his poker
face, taking a hand off of his blade to reach into his pocket. He pulled out the flare and
bit into it. Nataku saw with surprise as he broke the flare and threw it at him.

Nataku ducked and dodged it, yelling, "What good is that?!" Nataku then noticed it. His
shadow stretched before him, due to the light from the flare behind him. Without letting go
of his blade, SSJ slapped his hands together and yelled, "Kage Mane no Jutsu!"

Before Nataku could move, SSJ's shadow already attached with Nataku. Nataku felt his body
being forced to move into a stand, hands in a position as if he held a blade. SSJ smiled.
"Shadow Copy Success," said the boy.

SSJ moved, aiming a slash at Nataku with his blade. Nataku realized his disadvantage, then.
He had no blade! The extra distance gained by SSJ having a weapon turned the technique in
his favor! SSJ stabbed Nataku through the leg, while Nataku's arms were aimed harmlessly at
SSJ's own legs.

SSJ pulled out the blade and cut Nataku's side. Nataku became enraged, his skin becoming a
darker shade of black. SSJ was suddenly surprised when he saw Nataku pulling his arm high
in the air, despite SSJ's own movements. 'He defeated my Shadow Copy?!' SSJ thought in
surprise.

Using all of his energy to fight SSJ's ability, Nataku threw his arm at SSJ, hoping the
wires would cut the boy. SSJ did the only thing he could do and detach from Nataku and leap
away as the wires cut through the celesium.

SSJ flipped back and landed upon the bridge, panting. Nataku got into his stance, showing
his ten weapons menacingly. SSJ grit his teeth, thinking about how he could truly defeat
Nataku if he had all that terrifying power.

He needed to defeat Nataku, but he didn't know where to start. The only thing he thought of
that could help was that the ooze was on Nataku's left shoulder... SSJ suddenly realized
Nataku's weakness. If he aimed for the left side of Nataku... If he aimed for the heart, he
could defeat Nataku!

SSJ's face became set, and he got into his stance. Nataku noticed it. Momo looked down at
the scene and was filled with terror, then. She dashed to the pillar and slid down it
towards the bridge where Nataku and SSJ where.

As she descended, she saw SSJ begin dashing at Nataku, and Nataku at SSJ. Nataku held back
his arms, prepared to slash through SSJ. SSJ's arms became a blur as he thrusted the tip of
his blade towards Nataku. Momo was quick to jump, arms wide, between SSJ and Nataku.

The two were taken completely by surprise. Their attacks were on the dangerous course of
killing her! "Shit!" SSJ swore to himself as Nataku thought, 'I can't stop my attack!'

Blood flew in the air. Blood dripped about Momo, staining her clothes red. SSJ was frozen,
seeing his sword cut Momo. Nataku, too, was frozen as he saw his wire wounding his sister.
But Momo shook with fear. She was alive.

She saw that SSJ had moved his left hand to catch the wires of Nataku's right. Nataku had
moved his left hand to take the brunt of SSJ's blow. A stray wire barely grazed Momo's
right shoulder, while SSJ's blade had made a shallow cut in her right shoulder. They were
locked in place, weapons cutting into each other, Momo within the circle they formed. Tears
ran down her cheeks as she begged, "Please... Stop this!"

The two's eyes widened in surprise. SSJ let go of Nataku's wires, and Nataku shoved SSJ's
blade away. Momo continued begging, "That's enough. It is enough." She looked ahead at SSJ,
eyes full of tears. "Please, SSJ. He is my dear brother. Even though he left us, I still
love him. He took care of me when I was young, even more so after Yuki-chan died. He has
looked out for me ever since father died, too." SSJ looked deeply into Momo's eyes,
astonished by her words.

She turned to Nataku. "Please, Natsuki-chan... You don't need to do this for me. I don't
hate SSJ... I... I love him, okay?" Nataku's eyes were wide open as he heard her sister's
words. "We have hurt each other, I have betrayed him, but he has always been kind to me. He
is truly seeking to repair his mistakes." Nataku's red eyes looked down at his sister. The
blackness of his skin faded. The veins retracted from all over his body, returning to the
point on his shoulder. His skin became its normal tint as he stared lovingly at his sister.

"So, please... You two are the two people most dear to me right now... I don't want anyone
of you to die." SSJ and Nataku looked at her.

Nataku then cried, "But Momo! You, too, hated him! He couldn't have smooth-talked his way
into your heart?!" SSJ and Momo looked up at Nataku. "He killed our father! He put you
through Hell! Is it not fair for us to repay him? I'm fighting for your sake!" Nataku
pleaded with Momo, who just smiled and said nothing.

Finally, they heard SSJ say, "Alright." The two turned to SSJ. He collapsed back and lay,
looking at the sky. "I'm taking too long here." SSJ looked up at the darkness above, his
blue aura fading and disappearing. He sighed, taking a huge breath and exhaling. "I need to
go down and rescue Cindy. I can't waste anymore time here fighting someone I don't need to
fight."

SSJ then sat him, looking straight at Nataku. "If you are fighting for Momo's sake," he
began, "Don't you think you should ask her if she needs you to fight for her?" Nataku
looked down in surprise at SSJ. SSJ continued muttering, staring at the darkness to his
side, "I mean, if a friend killed a guy I mildly disliked for my sake, I'd be pissed at
him." SSJ looked up at Nataku again. "So ask her."

Momo looked down at SSJ. The two looked at each other and smiled. As SSJ called his
bishoujo, Nataku turned to Momo. Momo turned about. "Momo," began Nataku. "What do you
wish?"

Momo smiled. "I wish for this to stop."

Nataku looked at Momo's smile. He bowed his head. Without turning to SSJ, he said, "Okay. I
will." SSJ smiled as Yuna finished healing his wounds. SSJ pointed to Momo, and she, too,
was healed. With that, he returned Yuna and got to his feet.

"The bonds of my soul and this body are weak, anyway," said Nataku. Momo and SSJ turned to
him as he spoke, stepping backwards towards the pillar, "We Nishiten had once fought
against that one boy, Jallopsimon-"

"Van..." SSJ muttered under his breath.

"He wiped us out and tore us apart," continued Nataku, ignoring SSJ. "I was killed, and a
week later, I was brought back as this man-machine. My soul was about to break its final
bonds and head for the Underworld, but now it barely is attached to this body.

"This is the same for the rest of the Nishiten, save for Genbu, who had survived that
battle. We are all heavy bodies controlled by souls that are barely attached. Maybe it is
that weak bond that makes it easy for Virus to infect us." Nataku turned to the ooze on his
shoulder. He uttered as he reached for the ooze, "For Momo's sake..."

SSJ and Momo were taken aback to see Nataku pull the mass away from his skin, veins still
connected to his body. The veins became stretched to their limit, almost about to break.
But, the veins finally were pulled out of the body, all of Virus out of Nataku's body.
Nataku threw the ooze at the celesium pillar, letting it burn at the touch of the metal.
Blood from Nataku's open wounds, and as he looked at SSJ and Momo, he said, "I have little
time to live, anyway. I will protect Momo down here. Go save your friend. I never cared for
this plan, anyway, for it would kill Momo."

SSJ nodded. As he turned to leap from the bridge, he heard Nataku still speak, "Just hope
that my comrades were defeated by your friends."

SSJ looked back at Nataku. He nodded again. SSJ turned to Momo and said, "Take care. I'll
be off." With that, he kicked off and leapt into the darkness below.

Momo was silent as SSJ disappeared over the threshold of the bridge and became enveloped in
the dark. "Take care," she finally said. She then felt Nataku put a hand over her, leaning
on her. She supported him.

"You really do love him, huh?" said Nataku.

Momo's face became red as she looked down with a smile. "Yeah..."

She looked up at her brother and saw his troubled face. Nataku whispered, "I'm betraying my
comrades... They have looked after me for three years. They have been my friends for three
years. And now... I'm worthless..." Momo looked up sadly at her brother. She wrapped her
arms around him and held him in an embrace. His face softened and he smiled. He returned
the hug. There was nothing else she could do but love him.

***

Davis, sleeping atop Mokona, awakened suddenly. He opened his eyes and saw the pillars and
bridges all around. He sat up and saw Mokona carrying him. "Mokona?" he asked. No answer.
He suddenly saw people in the distance. He recognized Momo, but not the other one.

He then remembered Yuki Yamatani's pleas. "Bring me to them," said Davis. Mokona obliged,
carrying him to the two. The two looked up at Davis and Mokona in surprise. He leapt down
and greeted the two. With that, he proceeded to relay Yuki's words.

***

SSJ leapt down through the darkness, falling from bridge to other bridge. He fell deeper
into the darkness, thinking about what had happened. Momo said she loved him. He smiled as
he leapt deeper into the darkness. He felt empowered by the fact that someone would be
waiting for him. He continued down, towards the darkness, towards the Grand Cathedral,
towards Cindy...
