Do You Believe In Magic

Chapter Three

Mudblood! Ferret!

So here it is, the 3rd chapter, and I hope you've noted that it's completely out of character for me to update so quickly after posting the previous chapter. I actually take forever to update. So I am going to time myself this time. It is 12:00 a.m. right now making it exactly day one of this update. Date: August 9th 2007. Start time: 11:59.
I hope you guys enjoy this chapter! Tell me if you think it comes out kind of lame compared to the previous chapters! We can't have any lameness can we?

Disclaimer: I don't own the characters or anything

Draco and Hermione left their compartment in silence. Neither of them new what to say to each other. They felt like they had said all that needed and could be said for now.

As the last few students scrambled off of the big red train, along with the two enemies-turned-friends, they all headed up to where the carriages lead by the Thestrals were.

Hermione looked at the strange creatures with a newfound interest and understanding. Harry and Luna were two people she knew who could see the Thestrals, but back in 5th year when they flew to the Ministry Of Magic to break into the Department Of Mysteries, Hermione and pretty much everyone else was not able to see them. That is because only one who has seen death can look at the seemingly invisible creatures and actually see them. Hermione was no longer one of those people wishing they knew what a Thestral look like. She had recently seen her Grandmother die. She had been ninety-two when she passed. She lived a healthy, long life, and Hermione was happy to know she was in Heaven now. Her Grandmother had had a strong faith, and a beautiful heart.

Hermione stood starring at the some-what horses, forgetting that the Heads' carriage wouldn't wait forever for her. She didn't hear Hagrid say hello to her as he passed, leading the first years down to the black lake where their little rowboats were, and she didn't hear Draco calling to her.

“Hermione… Hermione! Hello!”

Draco sighed and took a long pull of air.

“Mudblood!”
Hermione jerked out of her stance and looked at Dr-Malfoy in horror. But her look softened somewhat when she saw his guilty face.

“What?” She asked irritably.

Draco noticed that tone. It was the same tone she always used before when he was around or when he started talking to her…well, more like arguing. But he didn't like it.

“Hey, sorry. I didn't know how to get your attention; I didn't mean it. Swear.” He said hurriedly.

“Oh well, you could've just called me by my name! But I suppose my name to you is still, and always be, The Mudblood Granger! Right?!” Hermione's voice grew in volume as she went along. She was disgusted with herself for even thinking he could have changed!

Draco looked hurt and puzzled.

“But I did…”

Hermione almost believed him, but only because he look so honest—Surprisingly!

“Whatever Malfoy.” She said quietly as she passed him while climbing into the carriage. As soon as she sat down, the carriage started moving and Draco stumbled back into his seat across from Hermione. He grunted when he hit the hard seat and sat up rubbing his lower back.

Hermione looked concerned for about 3 seconds before her face hardened like stone and she turned away from him, starring bored out the window.

The truth was, she wasn't mad at him—Draco. She was startled by the word he used. She didn't understand how he could go from nice all summer, never hearing of that word from him, and then meet him on the train without hearing, then suddenly get off and it just slips out of his mouth Oh-so-casually, like old times. Then he goes back to acting like a friend who just lashed out at you and is feeling guilty about it.

She didn't understand him. How could she be his friend if she didn't know what was running through his head. Hermione could read Harry and Ron like open books. But Draco was completely unpredictable! She had never come across a book she couldn't read, and now here it was.

Draco looked at her. She had that look on her face telling him right away she was off in La La Land.

Draco's POV:

I don't understand. I said I was sorry, and she doesn't believe me. We were getting along so well. Nice job Draco! You really know how to reel `em in! Fantastic. I was finally becoming her friend. A good friend at that. And then all it takes to stir her up is one little word. Not a nice word, but a word nonetheless. And I said sorry! She was just so spaced out, I didn't know what else to do! And I thought it would be awkward to just go up to her and, well, touch her arm or something. That seems like something two really close friends or lovers would do. It didn't seem like the best idea at the time, but apparently I was utterly mistaken. Note to self: Stop being an asshole.

End of POV

Hermione's POV:

I want to forgive him. I really do. But I want to know for sure that he's being honest with me. Maybe he did try to call me…Maybe I didn't hear him? I was in my thoughts; it's actually possible that he tried to get my attention normally. If that's the case, then I suppose calling me the wretched name was the only way in his mind. He knew it got my attention all the time before, and probably guessed that I wouldn't expect it after all this time. It was pretty effective, I must admit. But still. That's just me; over-analyzing and making up my own conclusions to humour myself. But, it could be true…couldn't it? I'll talk to him later in the Common Room. That way we can just straighten things out properly.

End of POV

After that, time seemed to just rush by in a series of laughter, eating, speeches and catching up with friends, for Hermione and Draco. Though, neither was really in the mood to enjoy the delicious feast or the odd and exciting stories of their Hogwarts friends.

After the students were dismissed, Professor McGonagall walked briskly up to Draco and Hermione who were waiting by the end of the staff table, and gave them directions to their rooms.

“Your common room portrait is at the end of the 5th floor corridor, next to the portrait of the elderly men playing Wizards Chess, You're portrait is a few steps down from that one and has a picture of last years' Heads on them. A girl named Amelia Corpshot and a boy named Judas Mersh. Decide your password when you get there, but if you wish to decide it in the morning, use the password Snapping Snouts.”

Both teens nodded half-heartedly, and turned to walk towards where their common room was said to be located. They walked along in stripped silence and shuffled their feet down the hallways, wanting to just get inside their common room and fix everything. They weren't happy with the uncomfortable silence quiet between them. It just felt so foreign after all they had talked about and gotten to know about each other.

Almost a good ten minutes later, they came across their portrait for the common room. The two heads stood with linked arms and giddy smiles on their faces. If the two new heads didn't know any better, they would say that the previous heads' had something going on among them.

“Hello! My name is Amelia! I see you're the new heads'! Congrats, congrats!” Cheered Amelia. She must have been about 5' 7” or so, and had honey blond hair. She had beautiful brown doe eyes that sparkled when she spoke. Hermione couldn't help but smile at the joviality Amelia portrayed.

“Yes, Congratulations! It is an honour to us to be your common room portrait! You two will do very well,” Judas stated in a deep gentle voice. So unlike the merriness of Amelia's greeting, yet it seemed to have the same smile attached.

Judas was tall and handsome, with dark brown hair just sitting slightly past his ears. He had green eyes like grass, and strong jaw line. How these two had gotten together, Hermione and Draco would never know, but they seemed happy, and that's all that mattered…right?

“Hello, I am Hermione Granger, and this is Draco Malfoy. It's nice to meet you,” Hermione smiled up at the two people in the portrait. She couldn't help but feel her anger and confusion towards Draco melt away as she stared deep into the expressions of the other heads'.

“Brilliant! So, what will your password be then?” Said Amelia.

Hermione looked at Draco who was starring unhappily at the floor.

“Draco…?”

Draco's head shot up at the mention of his first name, and the fact that Hermione was actually talking to him.

“Y-yes?”

“You choose the password,” she smiled up at him.

“Are you sure?” He asked.

“Yup.”

Draco thought for a moment, but couldn't think of anything that Hermione might like. He didn't want to piss her off again with something stupid, but then an idea struck him.

“How about we both choose. You think of a word, and I think of a word, and we put them together to form a password that we both like,” Draco waited as Hermione stared at him.

After a few moments, Hermione nodded her head. Draco smiled, and they both went to work in their heads, thinking up a good work for each of their choice of password.

Hermione's POV:

I want it to have to do with love. Or friendship. Maybe life? Life in general? Something that represents me… What about `Honey'? I love honey, and my hair and eyes are honey coloured… No. That's not very good. What about, `Magic'? It definitely has something to do with me. But it also stands for everyone in this school… wait… I know! Dignity! I'll choose dignity as my word. I have dignity. That works!

Draco's POV:

Hmmm… It has to be something that goes with me. Nothing dark, but not snaky either. That wouldn't do… I want it to have something to do with love, but that doesn't have a whole lot to do with me… I only have my mom who really loves me. My father couldn't possibly… Well… I'll try it…See what she says.

End of POV's

Draco looked down at Hermione, who turned and looked at him.

“So, what did you come up with?” Asked Draco.

Hermione smiled to herself. “Dignity.”

Draco thought about it. It was good. Strong, unlike his. But, here it goes…

“Love.”

Hermione looked puzzled.

“Pardon?” She asked hesitantly.

“My word is Love.” Draco looked into Hermione's eyes, and she had to look away because of the intensity of the stare.

“Love.” Hermione whispered.

“Dignity.” Draco whispered at the same time.

The both looked at each other and then turned to the people waiting in the portrait.

“Love and Dignity,” they said in unison.

Amelia and Judas smiled and suddenly the large painting opened up, to reveal a short hallway lit by candles on the walls, and another door at the end of it. It was decorated in Gold and silver, with a Snake tangled around a Lion in the middle of the door.

Hermione looked at Draco, and Draco at Hermione. Then Draco did something unexpected. He took Hermione's hand and started leading her down the hallway.

Hermione didn't know what to think. Her body was half rigid and half slack. She was letting herself be pulled along by Draco, though ever step felt sharp and forced.

When they got to the end of the hallway, Hermione had relaxed somewhat, and had curled her fingers slightly around Draco's just so she didn't feel so awkward. Draco took the brass handle on the door and gave it a turn and a push. It opened easily, and inside, a beautifully decorated common room was revealed.

The walls were painted in red and gold stripes, while the couches, chairs and floor tiles in the kitchen which was just a few feet away from where they were standing, we themed green and silver. On one end of the room, there was a tiny staircase with only four steps that lead to a flashing painting, displaying 3 second glimpses of Hermione's school pictures from 1st year all the way up to now. Hermione rushed over to the door, and gasped excitedly.

She looked over across the room and saw that Draco had done the same thing. He looked back at her and pointed to the door with a silly grin and said, “Did my hair actually look that aerodynamic in first and second year?”
Hermione laughed and nodded to him before trying to open her door, which wouldn't budge. But then came the high voice of a little girl, which seemed to be right in front of her. She looked up and noted that the painting had stopped on her first year picture. And she was talking to Hermione. Well…Big Hermione.

“Hello, older me. I'm afraid you wont have access to this gorgeous room until you set your password! Make it a good one though! You don't want the ferret getting in!”

Hermione laughed. But then heard a high boys' voice from the other end of the room.

“I heard that mudblood!”

“Ferret!”

“Mudblood!”

“Fer— ”

“Hermione! Can you please shut yourself up?!” Cried a Draco jokingly.

Hermione was laughing hysterically by now. Draco was doing his best now to fall over, and was clutching the doorframe to keep standing. In the background, you keep hear the first year Draco and Hermione exchanging insults. Finally, Big Hermione and Draco managed to stop laughing long enough to tell their pictures to lay off.

“My password will be Ocard. Thanks,” Draco said to his mini-me thinking quick that his name spelled backwards was good enough. Hermione on the other hand was thinking more along the lines of rearranging the name to make something else.

“How about Mirohnee?” Hermione asked.

“Sounds good. Do you wish to enter, older me?”

“Um… Not right now, I will get something to eat first. I'll be more surprised if I am not starving.”

“Did you not just have a huge feast Hermione dear?”

Hermione laughed.

“Yeah, but I didn't really eat anything…”

“Okay. See you later.”

And suddenly the portrait started flashing through pictures again.

Draco's had started doing the same thing just moments after, and they both left their doors and walked into the kitchen.

“Wow…” Draco started. “Were we actually that bad?”

“I don't know. Well, I didn't think we were, but…” Hermione trailed off and another small laugh escaped her lips.

Draco smiled when he heard her laugh. It was like music when she laughed. He was so glad she was talking to him again. He grabbed a big red crunchy apple from a fruit basket in the middle of the counter, and then pushed the basket towards Hermione. She scanned the basket for a moment, and then decided on a banana.

They both walked over to one of the green couches, and sat down next to each other.

Hermione spoke first.

“Hey. I'm…uh… Sorry about earlier. I just, wasn't expecting to hear that…from you. Not after all this time…”

Draco lowered the apple he had been about to take a bite out of and looked at Hermione. His eyes wondered from he soft curly brown hair to her pretty brown eyes, and he smiled.

“No problem. I shouldn't have said it. It was stupid, and I am really sorry. I could have chosen a different way to wake you from your stupor.” Draco smiled teasingly at Hermione who playfully glared at him. But soon she started laughing and Draco did too.

“Hey, Mione?” Draco asked slowly.

Hermione looked up at the mention of her shortened name, and nodded for him to continue.

“I think…” He started.

“Yeah…” Mione asked slowly.

“I think… that this is the start, of a really good friendship.”

Hermione smiled and put her head on his shoulder, which surprised Draco to no end, but he smiled and leaned his head on hers.

Hermione grinned contentedly. “You bet.”
